How To: Update Original Nokia N73 Firmware to Music Edition

If you already own the Nokia N73, you can update the firmware to the Music Edition by using the Nokia Software Update with a little trick. Retailers are just receiving the Nokia N73 Music Edition as this how-to is published, but you do not have to buy the new Nokia N73 Music Edition to take advantage of the new features. Read on to find out how to update the firmware.

Before you decide to update your Nokia N73 to the Music Edition, know that this may void your warranty and you run the risk of breaking your phone, like Darla. Is it worth taking the risk? Find out first what to expect in the new Nokia N73 Music Edition (screenshots by mukushu):

8. Firmware Version: 3.0638.0.0.30

Now that you’ve seen how the Nokia N73 Music Edition differs from the standard Nokia N73, do you still want to do it? If so, this is how to update the firmware:

Download and install: Nemesis Service Suite and the latest Nokia Software Update.

  1. Connect your phone and wait for Windows to install the drivers.
  2. Open Nemesis Service Suite and click “Scan for new device” on the right-upper part of the window
  3. Click on the icon “Phone info”
  4. Click on “Scan”
  5. Change the product code to 0539343 and mark the case “Enable”.
  6. Press “Write”, and your phone’s product code will be changed (you might think that nothing happened, because the phone is still in normal mode, and the changing of the product code only takes a couple of seconds, but don’t worry, the product code changed !).
  7. Close Nemesis Service Suite and run the Nokia Software Update.
  8. Make sure not to touch the cable or the phone while your phone is updating or else you will break it!
  9. That’s it! When you restart your phone, it should now be the Nokia N73 Music Edition!

You may also want to change for black Nokia N73 faceplate housing to black to make it look more like the real Nokia N73 Music Edition. You can read more about how to change the Nokia N73 faceplate here.

  • I just want to point out how risky this can be considering the future...

Say that you choose to change the product code to something else and then Nokia later decide to take the current product code away from NSU since they notice many people are changing this code....what will you do then if your phone goes dead?

You can no longer update the phone via NSU and if you turn to a Nokia servicepoint they will notice that your product code in the phone is different compare to the one on the label on the backside of the phone...this means that they most probably will deny to give you service since you have done something with the phone that isn´t allowed.

Next step, by a new phone?!

    I would say, very risky.....
  • @Henrik,
My phone can't switched on after i update my phone via Nokia Software Updater. When updating, my USB is going plugged in-out for 100 times and then, I going to remove the battery. Then install back. And then is cannot switched on. I tried this 100 times and was unsuccessful. Help me!
  • Pentti
Well, I tried it. It works, BUT a word of warning..that product code will turn the phone to english/chinese variant. Those are the only languages supported byt the phone after the update..
  • Yes, very risky, but people choose to take that risk to take advantage of some cool new features.
  • Ficko
And how i can go back to original firmware? Is there any option? I miss international characters on this firmware.
  • I don't think you can downgrade.

  • ric
nice info but i'd rather not risk my perfectly working n73 by doing this. it,s so risky and for what? just added added features which i can do away with anyway. but still, it's great info.
  • Matt
OK did everything above and as it began doing the update it came up saying pdate failed. It downloaded the update then began transfering to the phone and got about 90% of the way and that was it update failed tried several times over and still it stuck at the same point.

Now my phone wont respond. I was give the option to cancel the update (retry or cancel) and retry led to the same result and cancel, still left the phone in the blank screen.

Now i am unable to revive it.

    Any suggestions please?
  • I wasn't updating mine to the Music Edition... I was just doing a regular software update.
  • Sorry, I meant, "break your phone like Darla" not "before you update to music edition like Darla."
  • @Mark Guim,

Can i reverse the steps from n73me back to normal n73?
  • Shadab
    Guys it works...
    There is no problems....
The sound quality becomes awsome with loudness and stero widening..
i think its worth to take the risk...
  • I think the only way you can revert back from the Music Edition to the Original Edition is by flashing the phone with Phoenix. Since the steps include questionable legalities, I cannot write more about it here. Sorry.
