How To: Update Original Nokia N73 Firmware to Music Edition
If you already own the Nokia N73, you can update the firmware to the Music Edition by using the Nokia Software Update with a little trick. Retailers are just receiving the Nokia N73 Music Edition as this how-to is published, but you do not have to buy the new Nokia N73 Music Edition to take advantage of the new features. Read on to find out how to update the firmware.
Before you decide to update your Nokia N73 to the Music Edition, know that this may void your warranty and you run the risk of breaking your phone, like Darla. Is it worth taking the risk? Find out first what to expect in the new Nokia N73 Music Edition (screenshots by mukushu):

1. Idle Screen with new clock.
2. New Main Menu Music Icon.

3. New Default Themes.
4. New Music Player with Album Art.

5. Music Player audio settings (Stereo widening is super cool!!!)
6. Music Player Visualization - Oscilloscope

7. Music Player Visualization - Spectrum
8. Firmware Version: 3.0638.0.0.30
Now that you’ve seen how the Nokia N73 Music Edition differs from the standard Nokia N73, do you still want to do it? If so, this is how to update the firmware:
Download and install: Nemesis Service Suite and the latest Nokia Software Update.
- Connect your phone and wait for Windows to install the drivers.
- Open Nemesis Service Suite and click “Scan for new device” on the right-upper part of the window
- Click on the icon “Phone info”
- Click on “Scan”
- Change the product code to 0539343 and mark the case “Enable”.
- Press “Write”, and your phone’s product code will be changed (you might think that nothing happened, because the phone is still in normal mode, and the changing of the product code only takes a couple of seconds, but don’t worry, the product code changed !).
- Close Nemesis Service Suite and run the Nokia Software Update.
- Make sure not to touch the cable or the phone while your phone is updating or else you will break it!
- That’s it! When you restart your phone, it should now be the Nokia N73 Music Edition!
You may also want to change for black Nokia N73 faceplate housing to black to make it look more like the real Nokia N73 Music Edition. You can read more about how to change the Nokia N73 faceplate here.

Henrik on 29 November 2006:
I just want to point out how risky this can be considering the future…
Say that you choose to change the product code to something else and then Nokia later decide to take the current product code away from NSU since they notice many people are changing this code….what will you do then if your phone goes dead?
You can no longer update the phone via NSU and if you turn to a Nokia servicepoint they will notice that your product code in the phone is different compare to the one on the label on the backside of the phone…this means that they most probably will deny to give you service since you have done something with the phone that isn´t allowed.
Next step, by a new phone?!
I would say, very risky…..
Pentti on 29 November 2006:
Well, I tried it. It works, BUT a word of warning..that product code will turn the phone to english/chinese variant. Those are the only languages supported byt the phone after the update..
Mark Guim on 29 November 2006:
Yes, very risky, but people choose to take that risk to take advantage of some cool new features.
Ficko on 30 November 2006:
And how i can go back to original firmware? Is there any option? I miss international characters on this firmware.
Mark Guim on 2 December 2006:
I don’t think you can downgrade.
Gav on 2 December 2006:
Excellent !! Works Perfect !!! Spot on thanks a lot
sayed hussain on 2 December 2006:
for this big idea of you,i will thank you REALLY BIGGGGGGGG;;;;;
Mark Guim on 2 December 2006:
You’re welcome. I’m glad you didn’t find any problems.
ric on 4 December 2006:
nice info but i’d rather not risk my perfectly working n73 by doing this. it,s so risky and for what? just added added features which i can do away with anyway. but still, it’s great info.
Matt on 5 December 2006:
OK did everything above and as it began doing the update it came up saying pdate failed. It downloaded the update then began transfering to the phone and got about 90% of the way and that was it update failed tried several times over and still it stuck at the same point.
Now my phone wont respond. I was give the option to cancel the update (retry or cancel) and retry led to the same result and cancel, still left the phone in the blank screen.
Now i am unable to revive it.
Any suggestions please?
Darla on 5 December 2006:
I wasn’t updating mine to the Music Edition… I was just doing a regular software update.
Mark Guim on 5 December 2006:
Sorry, I meant, “break your phone like Darla” not “before you update to music edition like Darla.”
Darla on 6 December 2006:
Lol thats ok Mark…
Hammad on 8 December 2006:
The Product Code 0539343 is for Chinese Version and I have successfully updated to it but i want an Arabic version Product code. English and Arabic Language Can U mail me on urgent basis the code for N73 Music Edition Arabic Version.
If it is not availabe then for N73 Normal Version atleast.
Thankyou
Han on 8 December 2006:
Can i reverse the steps from n73me back to normal n73?
Shadab on 8 December 2006:
Guys it works…
There is no problems….
The sound quality becomes awsome with loudness and stero widening..
i think its worth to take the risk…
Mark Guim on 8 December 2006:
I think the only way you can revert back from the Music Edition to the Original Edition is by flashing the phone with Phoenix. Since the steps include questionable legalities, I cannot write more about it here. Sorry.
Hammad on 8 December 2006:
Well I got solutions
Changed my Product Code to 0539295
Reinstall the update meaning the whole files are downloaded and the phone is updated and now i have English, Arabic and French Languages with Music Edition.
Found my product code under the battery so after updating i Fix it back.
Mark Guim on 8 December 2006:
Hammad, that’s great info! Thanks for sharing.

I got my original product code behind my battery, used nss to to write it to 0539408. When i select nsu, it shows that there are no new update now. 0539408 is my original product code, im now using 0539343 N73 ME. But i cant reverse e process back to normal N73. Can anyone help me? Thanks…

Han on 9 December 2006:
Then how do i flash my phone using nss? Can state the pros and cons… Thanks

just in case anyone was looking (like me), the australian code for an rm-133 n73 is 0539693.
Jayesh on 11 December 2006:
It works perfectly, ME music features are excellent in Me firmware, Thanks a Lot.
Mark Guim on 11 December 2006:
Han, NSS just changes the product code. You need Phoenix to manually flash your phone. It’s more complicated and probably more risky.
msc on 11 December 2006:
can u tell me what are the differences between firmware of the original n73 and that of the music edition and interent edition firware actually are? please fnx

I tried to update my phone to ME today .
Started NSU and it told me that a new version is available - so I downloaded it - version 1.2.30en . I changed my product code as mentioned above , using Nemesis . Then I connected my phone and started NSU . On clicking on update , NSU shows that it is downloading something (75.1 MB) . Well , it downloads about 2 MB and says - download cancelled .
Whats wrong ? Any ideas ? Pls help .

Updated my phone after days of deliberation i took the plunge.. and now i have a BRAND new rocking N73 Music Edition.. Thanks for all the help.
After download when update starts you will get a notification that a new cable has been installed then the entire process will take around 10-15 mins during this time you will here the usb connected and disconnected windows sound ignore that… The progress bar will proceed till around 80%.. its all good. Finally around 80% it will get stuck for a few mins donot worry.. then it will say PHONE UPDATED !!
Couple of tips
1) Ensure that your phone is in general profile
2) DONOT touch the phone/cable while update is going on
3) Keep the charger plugged in all the time
4) Take a backup of all the data
5) Do the backup on either on Saturday or Sunday night . This is because in case it becomes a brick u can go down to Mobile repair shop and get it reflashed :).
6) In case the update failed.. KEEP RETRYING..
7) If something is not working properly after the update.. do an update again.
Go ahead enjoy ur new phone

Hi there ,
Just been reading all your post’s , and after some heavy thought decied to take the plunge in to the unknown , After getting my n73 four days ago & seeing this guide on how to change to Music edition or Internet Edtion , went ahead and did the firmware update.
All went according to plan and the phone is now a nice shiny internet edition in vanilla ( which i am planning to change , thanks to the gudie that you gave ha ha ).
Well i got to say the only thing i regret is the font that the internet edition has is pooh ! i dont like it at all , is there anyway of changing back to the Standard n73 or getting to fonts changed on the handset , its not that i dont like the Internet Edition its just that the fonts are killing me and i am very happy with how much quicker the handset works.
Would it be a case of changing the handset back to the euro 1 standard code and would this include the updates.
Well again thanks for all the help and will speak to you soon hopefully !
Get back to me guys

Dont try this update if you have heart attack.
{^_^}/
I am one of a thousand people that try to change the regular N73 to N73 ME firmware.
So before start to update i read all the risk & the worth if success carefully.
After knowing what will i do with my New N73 life, i choose to update it in the middle of the night due to local connection best speed just around 45kb.
When the update begin i am shock & feel dizzy to know that till full update need 63.3MB,which mean i nead 5 hours to finnished it with 45kb speed.Don`t want to regret it by pressing cancel or unplug the usb i try to calm down and continued the update with a very hard feeling ofcourse.
That night be my very very very loooong night ever, cant sleep all the night, felt sooooo unwell like people when breaking heart. ^_^ .Try to ease the feeling with my PS3,some comics & DVD movie with hope will felt sleep at least feel sleepy, but it dont work. The feeling going worse when in the 3rd hours of updating time.
So with haste when to living room to check if anything still ok with the update. And Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit i found my comp self restart cause by short electric with mean the Internet connection also disconected.
Watching that in front of my bed room door i felt all my body paralyze. With unhope, frustating and all complicated complication feeling for a second before i close my body to the computer.
With carefully i pick my phone and check it.
And Woooouwwwwwwwwwwwwww…………Lucky my phone still running like nothing happend. This is the 2nd weeks from the time i try to update my phone and it still run perfectly.
That experience made me love my N73 soooo much cause it not made me to spend more mony for another new mobile & also teach me how to thanks and please with what i had, ^_^

Alex Slane on 16 January 2007:
I have good news for all you can change the handset back to the normal vanilla n73 with out any problems at all , looked around at a few sites and found this list of codes , as the fonts really cooked my head that much !
http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum/showthread.php?t=53992
Got to be honest much happier now and i am back on my original product code as well all seems fine, the one i selected is the Euro 1 code and then updated.
the thing is that i am a avid fan of surfing the net and the fonts were killing me so much i just had to throw the towel in ! and some more news if you really want the themes for the phone found these links
http://www.megaupload.com/it/?d=0SJX5K02
got to be said that i did not find alot of diffrence in the software that was there and no can take advantage of all of it !
Damn i wish the refinedness of these fonts !

Hallo…
How do you do guys?…
Hope all of you lucky enough to success updating the mobile to the latest firmware.
This time just passing by, looking for a people experiment in updating the mobile. Cause some time the story will be quite funny., Like mine when my comp self restart at the 3rd of 5 hours of updating time.
Can thee imagine how many guts & patient must I have to updating the 63.3MB file with just maximum & unstable 45kb local connection speed that time?.
(Still can read the story above)
Now don’t have a gut to try to updating my still uses N73 mobile anymore, still will feel dizzy if trying to toughs what have I done with my N73 a month ago.
Just can’t think off, why much people choose to take the risk to kill the phone if failure occur in updating rather to sold the old & buy a new one.
I thought the Nokia product resale price won’t too fall from the new one as long as the mobile type or series not more than 3 month.
(Than to buy a new one with a new budget if brake down, isn’t it?)
Your Sincerely,
Henry Sunardi

Guys….Let me ask u one Question?
Do u think that updating your phone to N73 Music Edition is worth all the risk….The answer is 100% “NO”…Look at ur original N73 phone mates…Whats wrong with it?I have had the phone for the last 3 months…and im perfectly happy with it…If u say that N73 Music editiion has got better sound then let me ask u one Question..What is the problem with the present sound..To be frank im perfectly happy woth the sound…The sound thru the earphones at 100% volume is perfect..I dont need more volume or less volume..What else do i need… I just love the phone as it is..The equaliser…Is it worth all the risk for getting that equaliser…Absolutely no..If u really want more music or music at its best then go grab urself an I
Pod..In all its glamor and glory i love my N73 as it is…and nothing what is written here would lead me to change my original N73 to N73 ME

@Andrew Burgin you didnt click the box next to WRITE in nemesis service suite. i acctually updated it to ME, no problems, but i don’t think that phone is louder. also, i don’t know, what is the point of LOUDNESS function-sound sucks and it’s not LOUD. and yes, in new version, you can’t get out of music player thru equalizer.one more question.
Sherms on 5 February 2007:
Well, after a lot of thought, I decided to try it out this Sunday, 4 Feb 07. Used NSS to change the product code of my phone to the Euro 1 code mentioned in this website and then went ahead with the NSU.
It worked in the 1st trial itself and I have now a N73 ME. Thx Mark Guim!
By the way, I’m from India (for those of you who are also from India and have been wondering if it works or not..)
Remember, nothing ventured - nothing gained (or lost!). So all of you who are in two minds, take the plunge - its OK. But take all the care that has already been mentioned in this blog.
Just one more info I would like to share with all - please first check up whether or not there is an update available for the product code that you have changed to (do this before you change the code with NSS).
This can be done on the Nokia website (at least on the Nokia Europe website) under “Check for software updates” where there is a place to type in the code and then you get the info of what update is available (or none is available). I used the Euro 1 code to upgrade and now have V 3.0649.0.031 07-12-2006 in my N73.

Please help!
I have changed the product code of my n73 to 0539364, and I have installed the latest NSU as well. But now as I run the NSU, it just closes automatically. Can please someone explain what is the problem here?
Thanks!
Sherms on 9 February 2007:
@Alfredo - you just need to change your product code to Euro 1 or Euro 2 with NSS and then upgrade your phone with NSU. Once you have completed the upgrade, the phone will start with English language but you can easily change to Italian through the “Settings” menu. Ciao!
For your ref, the product codes for N73 ME for English and other Euro languages are:
A music edition N73:
0537289 Euro 1>>>English,French,German,Spanish,Italian,Portuguese(jazyky od AIR)
0539193 France
0539207 Alps
0539239 Euro 2>>>English,French,German,Italian,Dutch,Turkish(jazyky
@Andrew Burgin - I faced the same situation and went ahead with 1st updating the NSU (approx 25mb I think) and then after it was completed it automatically opened up to let me run the software update for my phone (75mb).
Please remember to check that the update for the product code that you have changed to (using NSS) has a new update available (like I mentioned on 5 Feb - it can be checked on the site http://europe.nokia.com/A4176089
in the section “Software update availability”.
Once you check that a new update for your selected product code is available, go ahead and proceed with the NSU update of your phone. Remember all the precautions about not touching your phone, cable etc. and ensure that your battery is fully charged, computer is on power backup and internet connection is not going to go off in the middle of the update. If something like this happens, you will turn your phone into a paperweight rather than an upgraded N73ME!
All the best and may all of you also succeed like I did.

Yep. Dunnit. Worked a treat. I took what precautions I could - fully charged handset, restarted handset, checked cables in properly, rebooted PC before operations, unloaded all programs like Instant Messenger, Bittorrent and anything else that is likely to hijack focus and processor cycles at a critical moment. Should have unloaded AV too thinking about it. There were some long pauses in the installation process so BE PATIENT!
For reference: handset was a Vodafone (UK) branded unit with product code 0541044. FW version is now up to 3.0705.1.0.31 and I have English and Chinese as languages.

I am in the UK. I used the 0539343 product code originally and successfully flashed my phone up to N73 ME. This installs for English and Chinese (see above) and worked a treat but for a couple of things:
1) Now had push to talk stuff installed. This is not implemented in the UK. No biggy but …
2) Voice Dialing would NOT work at all. Previously it did (after a fashion).
I therefore took the plunge once more and changed the product code again, this time using the Euro 1 code - 0537289. NSU pointed out that this FW revision was already on the phone. I told NSU to shut up and get on with it.
After the SW was installed, I composed a text and looked at the writing languages available. I got a full list of central Euro languages. This confirms that the alternative Euro 1 code was installed.
Voice recognition works - better than originally now. PTT has gone. Will let you know if I notice other changes. Happy Jimbob.

any offial changelog for n73 me 3.0705.1.0.31
Sherms on 15 February 2007:
Hi Jimbob - I also upgraded to ME using Euro 1 code and I have PTT under the folder “Tools”. Maybe you just checked under “Applications” and did not see it. PTT is also not of any use to me here in India though - as it is not provided by any of the GSM operators out here as yet..

I got my N73 upgraded to M.E sometime back. A few days after that, I get it updated with v3.0649.0.0.31. But now, I cannot kill the music player application. If I want to shut the application down, I have to restart the phone. Has anyone else oberved this problem? Is there a solution to this?
Thanks.

Super Tausif on 17 February 2007:
Hi all,
(Here i again want to tell you 1 thing. Nothing happens to phone untill all the update is completed. i mean 71.3 MB is downloaded and if phone is disconnected or net is diconnected or battery goes off, nothing happens to phone because the updated files are downloaded to your computer first not to the phone. After complete downloading of update files (71.3 MB) then these files are installed in the phone, at this momment your phone should not be disconnected or battery should be fully charged. Here i am giving you an excellent way, when your phone is detected by the Nokia Software Updater, and updating is started, your computer will show your phone disconnected, remove the USB cable from the phone and keep it aside. Now when 70.0 MB files are downloaded, again connect your phone to the USB cable and now there are no risks and problems. Be Happy all…)
i m from Pakistan. I Bought my New Nokia N73 (Regular) 1 month before. i was searching the net for the softwares for my fone then suddenly i came across this site. Great…! i downloaded the Nemesis Service Suit and Nokia Software Updater. Then I updated my Nokia N73 (Regular Edition) Firmware V 3.0649.0.0.1 and Product Code 0529785 into New Rocking Beautiful Nokia N73 Music Edition Firmware V 3.0705.1.0.31 (Product I.D. 0539295 for English, Arabic & French) by the following procedure:
1- Installed Nokia PC Suit on my computer.
2- Installed the both downloaded softwares i.e. Nemesis Service Suit and Nokia Software Updater on my computer.
3- Then Connected my phone to computer with the standard USB cable came with the phone in the package.
4- My computer detected the phone and installed the softwares of phone.
5- Opened the Nemesis Service Suit.
6- Clicked on the “Scan for New Device” on the right upper corner.
7- Clicked the “Phone Info” tab.
8- Clicked the “Scan” tab.
9- Clicked the “Read” tab. there appeared the old (Original) product code of the phone.
10- Then deleted the original product I.D. 0529785 and wrote the new 0539295 ( English, Arabic & French) and marked the box “Enable” in front of the product I.D. box.
11- Then clicked the tab “Write” and the code was changed.
(Here i want to suggest a very important thing. After doing this all procedure close the Nemesius Service Suit and then again run the same procedure. This time when you click the tab “Read”, there should appear the new product code. This is necessary because many people are unable to change the code correctly and therefore unable to update the software. So it is a necessary thing to be sure that product code is changed.)
12- Then run the Nokia Software Updater Program.
13- Program detected my phone and checked for updates.
14- It showed that older is Firmware V 3.0649.0.0.1 and new update Firmare V 3.0705.1.0.31 available.
15- Then i started the update.
16- After 2 hours, my phone was a New Rocking Nokia N73 Music Edition with Latest Firmware.
17- Then i changed my product I.D. back to original (0529785) with the help of Nemesis Service Suit.
18- Then i bought a Black Casing of Nokia N73 Music Edition of just PK Rs. 1000/= and a HS 21 headset of Nokia 3250 with remote control of just PK Rs. 800/=.
19- Changed my casing by easily removing face plate with the help of two credit cards as told in this forum.
20- Removed the 6 screws on the sides with T6 key. Then removed the LCD. It was difficult but then i found an easy way. I used a common pin to remove the locks from sides and LCD was removed very easily without any problem or damage.
21- Removed the 7th screw below the LCD and then changed my all the parts and my casing changing was complete. NOw it was Original Nokia N73 Music Edition. (Great)
22- Headset HS21 with remote control of Nokia 3250 gives extraordinary sound quality and the Stereo Widening Effect gives the feeling of listning music in a big room with the best Stereo System in full volume…
Thankx for all great people who started this…

Sherms on 18 February 2007:
Prakash, our friend from Pakistan has given very good instructions about how to go about it.
Shukriya, Tausif bhai, its great aap ka update kamyaab raha! Black cover change karte waqt aap ko bhi pareshani hui ki nahin? Mujhe toh kaafi risky laga kyonki sab kuch (speakers, camera lens etc.. new case mein daalna para)- but finally maine bhi kar liya!
However, I would not recommend disconnecting the phone (i.e removing the usb cable from your computer etc..) during the process. You can read my earlier post dated 5 Feb. I am from India and I successfully updated my phone to ME earlier this month.
I suggest you try with the Euro 1 product code 0537289 which has English, French, German, Italian etc.. as the language options in the software. For this product code, firmware version V 3.0649.0.031 07-12-2006 is available and I was able to successfully upgrade to this.
Please remember that you must have power backup for your PC / laptop, phone should be fully charged and better still - connected to the charger throughout and most importantly your intrernet connection should preferably be a good and dependable broadband.
I took all these precautions and just left the room for about 2 hours. When I returned, all was well and I had upgraded my N73 (which I bought way back in Jul 06, the really 1st ones that came out)to N73ME with 7th Dec 06 software version of Euro 1.
Best of luck and hope you are able to do it!

My story:
I thought was good to share my version with u :>
I was following all the steps necessary to upgrade my n73 to n73ME, and the updater just kept saying “error with update, cancel or retry”. i tried to retry many times, but i wasnt unable to update my nokia.
I followed the message to remove battery and try again (stupid thing) but the update didn’t pass the 0%.
Tried to pull out the cable and turn on the phone (stupid thing), but nothing happened.
Tried to insert the cable, but a message appear saying USB device damaged.
I didn’t believe it… my phone was bricked! I start to look for a 3rd party to unbrick my phone but i still had some hope left, tried to pull and insert the usb cable but the message was showing again. Some minutes after i realised my USB light was on and i tried to do another update, and, suprise, it detect my phone!!! 80% and another error, pressed retry and it went from 0 to 100% ;D “Your phone was updated succesfully, now u can start using your phone”
I turned on my phone and it works perfectly!! OMG i’m so happy and so realived
Sorry 4 my english, im portuguese
