How To: Update Nokia N73 Firmware to Internet Edition
The Nokia N73 Internet Edition Firmware 3.0638.0.0.43 update is now available. The Nokia N73 Internet Edition was only announced in Taiwan and Hong Kong, but anyone with the N73 can change their firmware to take advantage of the new firmware’s features by tricking Nokia Software Update. How is the Internet Edition different from the recently released Music Edition? Find out now as well as the instructions on how to update your Nokia N73 firmware.

The Nokia N73 Internet Edition contains all of the features of the Music Edition, but the multimedia key in the Music Edition goes straight to the music player. The Internet Edition retains the function of the original multimedia key where you can configure your own shortcuts to applications. They also included Windows Live Messenger and a few shortcuts to popular websites in the Internet folder. Otherwise, same as the Music Edition.
Updating to the Internet Edition is similar to the guide I wrote earlier on updating to Nokia N73 Music Edition.
Download and install: Nemesis Service Suite and the latest Nokia Software Update.
- Connect your phone and wait for Windows to install the drivers.
- Open Nemesis Service Suite and click “Scan for new device” on the right-upper part of the window
- Click on the icon “Phone info”
- Click on “Scan”
- UPDATE Change the product code to
0539366 (Hong Kong’s language pack: English, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese)
0539364 (Taiwan’s language pack: English + Traditional Chinese)
0539295 (Arabic, French, English)(People say it is ME edition)
0539269 (Swedish, Norwegian, English)(People say it is ME edition) - Mark the case “Enable”.
- Press “Write”, and your phone’s product code will be changed (you might think that nothing happened, because the phone is still in normal mode, and the changing of the product code only takes a couple of seconds, but don’t worry, the product code changed !).
- Close Nemesis Service Suite and run the Nokia Software Update.
- Make sure not to touch the cable or the phone while your phone is updating or else you will break it!
- That’s it! When you restart your phone, it should now be the Nokia N73 Internet Edition!
You may also want to change for black Nokia N73 faceplate housing to black to make it look more like the real Nokia N73 Internet or Music Edition. You can read more about how to change the Nokia N73 faceplate guide that I wrote previously.

You say it retains everything the Music Edition has, does this include the improved Music Player software?

Guess we’ll have to wait for those. Maybe on the european firmwares?

Now here’s a strange one for you all…
I have two UK Nokia N73’s, with O2 firmware inside (code 0539976)
A while ago, I changed the code on one of them to the generic European code, to allow me to update the old 2.0628.0.0.1 O2 operater firmware, to the newer version 3 software.
Doing this, you get all the bug fixes, but NOT the Music Edition new player, and stereo widening etc. (I know this, as I did exactly this).
BUT… you also keep the original fonts throughout the phone, which to me are MUCH BETTER - the fonts that come when you flash to the M.E., or the I.E. N73, are old fashioned looking, and jaggy to me.
I later again updated this phone from Music Edition, to Internet Edition, but like many others found that whilst it changes the nature of the Media Key back to how it used to be (that is, can be configured, not specific only to the music player), I found however that it did NOT install Windows Live Messenger, Gmail, etc etc. it is meant to.
So I have happily been running an N73 Internet Edition with the newer (worse) fonts, and the new music features etc, for the last few days, alongside my original O2 firmware 2.0628.0.0.1 Nokia N73 handset with the older better fonts, but old music player too.
Today, I decided to update this other phone slightly too, but NOT to the ME or IE edition as I dislike the fonts so much.
So I used Nemesis to change my product code to 0537289 (Euro 1).
I connected to Nokia Software Updater, it downloaded and installed the update (by my reckoning, this code should allow an update of the STANDARD firmware, not any special edition?)
And when my phone was re-booted, I found I was using the nice new “Stave” theme, but with my original, preferred fonts.
Cool. But wait… I loaded up my music player… and lo and behold, I have the new player, complete with album art, and stereo widening!
But with my ORIGINAL, better fonts!
I have no idea how I have managed this, but it’s the truth.
My version numbers now show as:
‘none’ M.E./I.E. edition handset with the original style fonts-
V 3.0638.0.0.30
30-10-2006
RM-133
Nokia N73 (01)
And for the Internet Edition handset with larger jaggy fonts -
v 3.0638.0.0.43
30-10-2006
RM-133
Nokia N73 (10)
Strange indeed.
Can anyone else yet to update, let me know how they get on too.
For me though, I am over the moon to find I have the best of both worlds - New Music Player and Stereo Widening, but with the original, and IMHO better screen fonts.

Updated my Three branded N73 to 0537289 (Euro1) ME and it rocks. Music player is great (why not have this in the normal version????) and the whole thing runs faster. Also goto the Download! app in Applications and you can download a free Zip Manager, Barcode Reader, YahooGO and Wireless Keyboard.
Now have X-Series and only thins I can’t download from the three internet site are MSN Messenger and Mobilcast. Got the MSN 1.0 version downloaded from elsewhere and its been working fine (Also looks better). Mobilcast was crap, just download S60 Internet Radio and have any shoucast radio station play on it.

Assuming that it was because Music Player was already open , I closed all other programs ,including Music Player and again tried it , yet the error keeps coming up .
It doesn’t even find any songs on searching ( I let it search for 5 hours ).

Hey guys hows it going, hope everythings good. I just wanted to run something by you guys; i’ave upgraded my N73 to Music Edition quite a while ago around there, four weeks and i love it and just yesterday i was just browsing the net after a while and i saw that a new firmware Internet Edition is avaiable so i decided to update it and i know all the product changing codes thing, so i changed my product code to “0539295 (Arabic, French, English)” cause i live in Saudi Arabia and if the phone does’t have Arabic then i can’t sell it, now i know i’m gonna keep the phone for a while but just incase i’d rather have Arabic, ok so i changed the code and the ran the Nokia Software updater and it detected my phone but said that it was already upto date and no updates are avaiable but my is the Music Edition in which the firmware is .30 at the end, so i then changed the code to “0539364 (Taiwan’s language pack: English Traditional Chinese)” and the same no updates and its the same for the “0539269 (Swedish, Norwegian, English)” but when i changed it to “0539366 (Hong Kong’s language pack: English, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese)” the Nokia software updater said that an update is avaiable, could someone please tell me whats happening cause i really miss the Multimedia Key and i wanna upgrade the phone to have Arabic, Thanks

Thanks for you replies guys, i indeed used all the product codes and only on the “0539366 (Hong Kong’s language pack: English, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese)” i was allowed to update so i trid it and it said that it was updating but then at around half way it stoped and said update failed and just below it said that there are no updates for my phone, i just thought that maybe it lost connection from the server or something so i tried again and the same, i did it a couple of times but still however MikeMaMan said that if you keep trying then maybe it’ll update, but Mark you could have a point saying that it may only be for Asia and SpenZ please do try posting the results after you update your phone. Theres just one other thing that i think could be a possiabality but this is just a theory of mine; you know each different product code gives a different number next to the “Nokia N73 (01)” here in the Euro2 product code its 01 however for the gulf one its (08) when i bought my phone (i live in Saudi Arabia so its most prob gulf one) i had (08) mine is just the regular Nokia N73 however i upgraded it to the Music Edition (this was when the Music Edition firmware was just newly announsed) using the Euro2 product key and so i then got a (01) after the Nokia N73 and i no longer had Arabic (which sort of scared me), but yesterday i saw a list of product codes for the N73 Music Edition and i saw that there was a Gulf region one so i changed my original product code to that and the ran the Nokia Software Updater and it said that my phone is fully upto date however i can chose to reinstall it so i did and now i got the (08) back as well as Arabic and its Still a Music Edition so in a way i’m really happy and kinda relieved cause i got Arabic back. Ok after i update my phone i change the product code back to the original one i had when i bought my phone (i don’t know why it just makes me feel better) and now if i run the software updater it says my phone is upto date but i don’t have the option to reinstall, Now when i try chinging the code to one of the Internet Edition codes the software says that my phone is upto date and i also can reinstall but no uodate to the Internet Edition,…Now Sence people have successfully updates their phones to Internet Edition i have a few questions for them: Did you update your regular N73 to MI and then IE or did it just go stright to the IE and this question is for people like me who have upgraded their regular N73 to ME and now to IE: Could anyone who has successfully updated their Music Editon N73 (and by Music Edition i mean preveously ugraded from regular N73 not the off the self N73 ME) could you please give the product codes that you used to upgrade your phone and what was their firmware version (i mean the number after Nokia N73) before they upgraded it, I think that, that number after the Nokia N73 has something to do weather you can upgrade your phone or not, Thanks again

Hello, I’m located in the Philippines.
I just completed a successful firmware flash from N73(1) to N73(14) Hong Kong product code 053966. Very nice. I also have the jaggy font but the music player is better. I just have to figure out how to get the album art to transfer from CD to phone.
Thanks for the information.
It was a smooth process, all 73.5Mb download & software upgrade.
I didn’t get to check out all options before restoring my back-up through PC Suite. I don’t have MSN Messenger but I suppose this is provider dependent. I got a dictionary and modem. Dictionary doesn’t work yet and I haven’t tried the modem.
More as I tinker with this new firmware…

The update always stops at around 80% says connection the phone is lost, I can restart the phone by removing the battery when it restarts I seem to end up with a cross between the music edition & the internet edition, ie. I get the update player which is on all the time but can still use the media key to select various apps and don’t get any of the msn messenger stuff, firmware reports itself as the current uptodate. Also some software like XpressPrint is missing, any links to redownload this?
The firmware version is now:
V 3.0638.0.0.43
30-10-2006
RM-133
Nokia N73 (14)
Everything seems to work okay so far (apart from some missing apps like xpressprint) I can also shutdown the music player by selecting exit in the equaliser settings.

Is it possible that something is interfering with the update procedure? Check to see that the anti-virus in your PC is disabled.
Monitor your PC resources while the update process is ongoing to see where the hang-up could be at. It’s a good thing the phone is still alive after an incomplete update. Have you restored your backed-up data to the device yet?
The update was a one time, no frills affair for me. Thank goodness.
I regret not fiddling longer with the default settings before restoring my backed-up data. I should have taken down the new things available after the flash. Oh well, I’ll find a “victim” who’d be willing to flash their “virgin” device here and make sure to take down notes, he heh…

- better battery management
and a lot more
but there are still some bugs remained on my phone
- cant zoom a 3Mp image to more than 50%
- still can’t delete themes
- some installed themes disappeared on application manager
- image viewing on gallery has changed … now new image will appear counter clockwise
also i don’t have any msn messenger installed
but im quite satisfied … since upgrading isn’t that difficult …

yeah it happens to me too, what you have to do is go to “now playing”>then options>then equalizer>then exit, ill close your music player then once you go in, ill get your songs and that’s it
To sidseimer:
i think you can zom, its on the options>digital zoom > then you put it on i think, works for me
to all people who try to use this, beware since it’s 100% working in asia phones, not really shure bout US i upgraded mine and works flawlessly(*except the fact bout 2gb’s bug, its kinda pissed me but everything’s well)
and one thing i notice, if you put a new theme on your internet edition, it takes off your internet folder, which is okay for me but not to others
and about the themes, its not that it cannot delete the themes, its just something is missing on the theme that makes it undelete, just download sysexplorer at m420 forum and you’ll find it there or use your mass storage and delete it at sys folder (*i dont know the folder number but you’ll find it by using search>type the name of the theme>viola once you find the file delete the whole folder with it)
and to my pinoy people, kamusta haha gleng ng n73 haha

coz im planning to buy a 2gb mini sdcard, currently im using 1 gig , , ,

yeah, ur right, n73 is simply amazing. . . its almost perfect. . .
to rockafeller, hi din, im from marilao, bualcan, im working here in makati, a tech support in a callcenter
for oggplayer users, at first Im having some problems using the sound widening on the music player,
coz equalisers in the music player are functioning well while im playing my ogg files on the oggplayer,
just find out that you need to play a music on the music player (with the sound widening and loudness turned on) and then pause it, open oggplayer and play music
you will hear the difference and the effects of the audio effect coming from the music player
i really love this phone, the best music player so far

RE: 2Gb Mini-SD storage.
There’s a bug? What’s the bug about?
I’m using a Kingston Mini-SD 2Gb card and it’s working fine.
RE: 3MP image zooming
Correct me if I’m wrong.
The bug reported is the inability to zoom in on a 3MP image?
I’m doing it right now and it’s working without a problem.
All my photos are taken in this resolution and so far no problems encountered. I get a memory warning after using the phone applications for sometime indicating too many applications active and to close some to enable zooming in again. I just turn off the power. It’s probably a memory resource handling issue. I have the F-Secure mobile security program always running in the background.
I always try to disabled the music player also.
By the way, my F-Secure trial period is expiring in 9 days.
I haven’t decided to renew yet, one year subscription is 34USD .
RE: For changes in fonts go to http://www.symbian-freak.com and check out the modding thread. You have to be a registered member to access it though. I’m fine with the fonts for now.
Has anyone tried aftermarket Nokia audio adapters for their other brand headsets? I tried an AD-41 yesterday from a friend but it didn’t work. I can’t source Nokia audio adapters from Nokia Care at the moment to try out their “original” Nokia accessories.

Hi there ,
Just been reading all your post’s , and after some heavy thought decied to take the plunge in to the unknown , After getting my n73 four days ago & seeing this guide on how to change to Music edition or Internet Edtion , went ahead and did the firmware update.
All went according to plan and the phone is now a nice shiny internet edition in vanilla ( which i am planning to change , thanks to the gudie that you gave ha ha ).
Well i got to say the only thing i regret is the font that the internet edition has is pooh ! i dont like it at all , is there anyway of changing back to the Standard n73 or getting to fonts changed on the handset , its not that i dont like the Internet Edition its just that the fonts are killing me and i am very happy with how much quicker the handset works.
Would it be a case of changing the handset back to the euro 1 standard code and would this include the updates.
Well again thanks for all the help and will speak to you soon hopefully !
Get back to me guys

You can close the music player by playing a song, then go to equaliser and cancel. This closes the music player. I always do this when I first boot my phone since I use LCG Jukebox as a MP3 player instead.

Thanks joncom but I want it to always exit when I stop playing and I dont really want to use a 3rd party app to play. Does the ME edition allow u to exit? I wanna try and go back to ME now from IE if its possible and also can I change the language code to Europe with the 5 european language files.

I see. The vanilla N73, mine, at least, used to have memory problems when zooming into images. It said low memory or something.
After the flash to IE I didn’t experience it anymore.
I use a Kingston 2Gb MiniSD and it’s working flawlessly.
My only gripe is after flashing to IE I restored data from a full back-up I ended up with a couple of themes I can no longer un-install (they came with the back-up).
By the way, I flashed without the MiniSD card.
I’m going to re-flash to vanilla flavor later after I get off work.
Then re-install apps from scratch. This time around no data restore to make sure the version I get is “pure”.
Like mahal posted I also have a dictionary that doesn’t work.
I believe it’s an English to Simple Chinese version and a modem app that only connect via infrared. Go figure.
Mark Guim:
I suppose no matter how much we thank you it won’t net a new N73
How are service providers in your location? Maybe they can offer you something irresistible for less quid?

Hi Mark,
Sorry to ask a slightly unrelated question - but the picture of the N73 you show on your blog has black side shortcut keys, IMHO that looks really nice with only the top navigaton keys in silver. I’ve looked everywhere for a replacement keypad like that and although I can find “black” keypads they still have silver side shortcut keys - does you, or anyone else, know where you can get a keypad that looks like the one in the picture on your blog??

Mark Guim on 16 January 2007:
Vaguely, the phone above with the black keypads is the actual Internet Edition phone being sold in Asia. Right now, the only way you can that color keypad is by buying/trading it off from an N73IE phone owner in Asia.

The upgrade worked for me! I went from 0539297 to 0539366 with Nokia updater version 1.2.3. It did stay at 80% upgraded for a few minutes, but I just waited and it eventually finished.
I do have the new music player and internet folder, but no msn, gmail or other internet links or icons. The new music player was worth the upgrade, and yes it is runningin the background all the time. Stereo widening does sound better. The phone is faster. Camera still makes shutter sound in silent mode. The fonts don’t look that bad, although the original fonts were chubbier and anti-aliased.

Ok so it worked for me-on the second try. The first time I tried, my computer rebooted due to a power surge. Result- RIP N73.
After a week chasing the care center folks, they reflashed it to a newer bios. Once again I changed the code to Hongkong and tried it. It failed at 80%..then I retried, and it worked!
Now here’s the weirdness…I changed the theme to a custom theme and the phone crashed. On rebooting-the ‘Internet’ folder had vanished, and its contents (downloads, search and Web) were in the main applications folder!!
The function key works normally, the music player is the same updated one (with balance, stereo widening and loudness, and album art support).
Firmware version is now the same as other IE-
