Nokia 6131 NFC Preview by PhoneScoop

Phonescoop previews the Nokia 6131 NFC with a video that demonstrates the new information transfer technology. The Nokia 6131 NFC is the world’s first fully integrated, commercial NFC handset, which will soon allow swapping business cards, collecting product brochures and buying coffee and more with the simple tap of a phone.

The Nokia 6131 NFC handset includes Near Field Communications (NFC) technology to enable information sharing, service initiation and payment & ticketing capability with one tap of the device. Jason Fitzgerald, the exhibitor shown in the video demonstrates how this is all simply done with the phone.

I think it is amazing and I would like to try one. Justin over at MoPocket was able to get his hands on an NFC enabled phone for the NYC Mobile Trial, a collaboration between Nokia, Mastercard, Cingular, and Citibank. He writes,

I have to admit. I have had the phone for a week now and it is very very very convenient. I have been using it on the 6 train NYC subway system and at Duane Reade’s. I find my self wishing that more places used it.

Nokia 6131 NFCI take the 6 train every day going to school and I see several stations using the Paypass receivers. I haven’t seen anyone used it yet, but that’s maybe because I’m always in a hurry going to school. Good thing they chose a low-end Nokia phone to feature NFC, because I honestly wouldn’t be comfortable taking out my Nokia N93 at the turnstiles.

  • pls tell mehow to reinstall nokia 6131

  • As promised the article about my Nokia 6131 NFC experience is now online. The deep link is: http://localocation.wordpress.com/2007/08/15/ca...

Please share your view on the future use of NFC.
  • I received my 6131 NFC today as I have been picked to take part in a test run by my local public transport company.
The enable ticket purchase via the phone's web browser and utilize NFC at the stations to cut down the steps on the phone from 9 to 3.

I still haven't tested it but sure will do and do a write up on my blog at: http://localocation.wordpress.com/

Please expect this to be online in about a week.

    Cheers
    Philip

  • I am part of the trial too. I too use my phone to take the 6 to and from work every day. It is so easy and convenient to use. One time I got yelled at from another subway rider as I went through the turnstile. He wanted to know if I used my phone and wanted to go back and show it to him, but I had already nearly gotten on my train. I hope is creates some buzz amongst his friends.

I am purposely frequenting merchants who accept PayPass. While I have used it at Duane Reade and CVS, there are many merchants in Grand Central who accept it as well –The two fish markets in the Grand Central Market food shopping area. Hot and Crusty at the 42nd and Vanderbilt entrance and Caffé Pepe Rosso on the lower level center area.

I have gotten some looks and smiles from cashiers at the check-out counter. They ask what kind of phone it is. I tell them but add that it is trial technology and the phone cannot be bought yet since it is just a prototype Nokia phone. It must returned at the end of the trial.

It is very convenient to use since I always carry my phone with me and now I never have to take out my card or wallet or sign for purchases (if under $25).

In addition, it seems the Subway trial has been extended through 2007. See: http://www.mastercard.com/us/paypass/subway/ind...

I hope the NYC Mobile Trial will be extended as well!

Wow... I love that... but I don't think this is in the US is it? I'm buying one from ebay.
  • Saadia,

How then would having more than enough storage slow down your phone? I'd recommend you go for the 1GB card, since more space is always good.

Nokia has already released an SDK for developer that will allow you to write programs for the 6131 NFC before it comes out.
