How To: Convert Movies, TV Episodes, Videos for the Nokia N95
I will show you how you can convert your favorite movies and TV episodes from your computer to watch right on the Nokia N95’s default movie player. The Nokia N95 supports H.264 playback. H.264 in simple words: high quality videos at small file sizes. Enough techno blabber! Find out how right now!
UPDATE: Nokia just released Nokia Video Manager for Windows. Check it out.
UPDATE 2: I found an easier and better way using VisualHub. Read How To: Easy and Best Video Quality Conversion Using VisualHub on Mac
There seems to be a lot of new Nokia N95 owners, so this guide comes in perfect timing. It will make third-party programs like SmartMovie obsolete. This is also quick and pretty simple. Here we go:
Download the latest Quicktime.
Open the movie or TV episode in Quicktime. If the file does not play on your computer, it means you are missing a codec or component. For the purpose of this guide, I will not get into that part of the topic.
Go to File -> Export. Select “Movie to MPEG-4″ then click Options. Copy the settings in the screenshot below.

Then click Video Options.. and copy the settings in the screenshot below.

That’s it! Just hit OK and save. Depending on your computer and the size of the file, it may take some time. For my sample, I converted a 350MB TV episode to 240MB. Transfer it to your “My Movies” folder in your memory card when it finishes.
Summary of video settings:
File Format: MP4
Video Format H.264
Data Rate: 700 kbits/sec
Optimized for: Download
Image Size: 320 x 240 QVGA
Turn On: Aspect Ratio using Letterbox
Key Frame: Automatic
Restrict Profile(s) to: Main AND Baseline
Encoding Mode: Best Quality (Multi-pass)
You can play around with the settings yourself, but these are the settings for the best quality that the Nokia N95 can playback for you. I also tested these settings in my Nokia N93 and it also worked fine.

I believe export is a Pro feature. You can always use super to convert files
Simon on 10 April 2007:
Just wondering why you drop down to 320×240?
The TV out works at 640×480.
Or is this for playback on the built in 320×240 screen?

Simon

My file/video does not play on my computer with Quicktime Pro.. but plays well with RealPlayer and Windows Media Player
what to do?
Mark Guim on 10 April 2007:
@simon this is playback on your phone. but you can also change it to 640×480 if you prefer watching on your tv out. You also have to change the bitrate to 1405 kbits/sec instead of 700.

Thank you so much for posting this and for taking the time to share these settings. I have used other programs to convert and play videos on my N93 & N73 and planned on doing the same with the N95. I converted some video files using an application someone posted at another forum and played them back on my N95; I was not impressed at all with the quality.
When I saw this post I immediately converted some commercials I produced and I was SIMPLY AMAZED at the quality. One commercial in particular that I shot in HD looks so crisp on my N95, just as good as the Nokia video that is preloaded. I didn’t realize QuickTime MP4 would work on N95.
All of the videos I have converted look identical to the originals with the same colors and just as smooth.
Thank you again!!

Could anybody give me a tutorial of how to convert videos for the N95 best quality settings using SUPER? Thanks!
K-Jay on 18 April 2007:
Also Mark have you done thorough testing to make sure that those are the possible video settings that can be played back on a Nokia N95? Also when i used this method to convert a video, according to my N95 it has a bitrate of 846kbps instead of 700kbps! Why is this?
PJ on 18 April 2007:
700kbs is just an average and only for video. Under this audio tab you’ll see that’s 128kbs by default. So added up gives you around 828 give or take.

Tried the Nokia Video Manager out. It works - eventually. It is slow, consumes vast amount of RAM and processor resources. Basically blocks my laptop.
As to the Quicktime conversion, I can’t make it work since there seems to be no working codec for xvid (I run on a PC). I tried “Alice soft dvd to h264″ but the sound is all out of sync.
Then I tried Avidemux and that fixed the sound sync problem but i got no video when playing it in the N95.
At the moment it seems I have to use Nokia Video Manager but it seems like an early Beta version guys. Or I could probably make a twostep convsersion - say from xvid to divx then to h264 but i havent tried that yet.
Any suggestions for a pc user?

****For those of you that have Media Centers and a Nokia N95***
I have been using “Mobile TV Center” which is an add-in to Windows Media Center computers which basically converts any recorded TV that is on your Media Center to 3gp format. All you need to do is install it on your Media Center and then either leave a memeory card in your memory card slot on your Media Center or plug your phone into the USB port and it auto-magically converts the recorded TV files to your card/phone. Works quite well. It isnt free but is a no hassle way of automating this (great if you communte on a train etc and always want last nights episode of #######). The only downside is that is isnt all that configurable at the moment. i.e my wife records programs that I’m not interested in and it copies all uncopied recorded TV to your card. Quality is good though and you can point it to a folder of your choice so doesnt have to be just recorded TV. Media Center use DVR-MS video format by the way.
If anyone knows of any other Media Center tools for converting videos/DVDs etc please let me know.
:o)

The purpose of this test was to make a custom video and convert it to be compatible with the Nokia N95.
- It needed to show in the gallery with thumbnail
- It needed to play using Realplayer built in
- It needed to maintain maximum quality for TV or Phone playback
- It needed to properly sync video and audio

Summary:
The conversions plays perfect on N95 or on TV and great quality and sync. Gallery and Real Player work perfectly.
Notes:
- Quicktime conversions did not work properly
- Other converters than Super may be possible also
- Many variations would most likely be possible on audio quality (stereo or mono or data rate)
- Lower video data rates and pixel sizes (320×240) are possible with smaller file sizes as desired
- H264 encoding is also possible but I wanted to mimic format as recorded using phones camera
- Native H264 encoding from premiere for IPOD format works on N95 but audio/video looses sync
– Note if the above Ipod file is then subsequently run through eg, Alive Ipod Converter it syncs again
- Various other results are obtained using H264 dpending on settings such as plays only audio or no thumbnail in gallery
- Super gave numerous errors in trying to convert mp4 formats or many others like wmv or avi
- Super worked fine with mpeg2 conversions
- Quicktime was used to “Show Movie Properties” of mp4 files to get specs

Dude are you serious about how slow this Nokia Video Manager is???
sifte on 13 January 2008:
I am really getting fedup with the video conversions!
First of all NVM is incredibly slow! well I would nt mind the speed if it worked everytime! but sometimes it works and sometimes the file it produces after conversion has no Video! and sometimes the video just does nt play on N95 (or on PC either). I would have guessed its the source file thats creating the problem, but then again NVM did work for the SAME video file!!
So i tried to use Quicktime, I did everything as written above, it generates the MP4 file, no problem, but then the file does nt play on N95!!
I tried SUPER and its SUPER FAST and ITS SUPER USELESS as in the end it comes up with error and suggests solutions which leads to the same error!!
I also tried a few other converters (video 9) and after conversion the file does nt work on N95!!
so tell me guys, what im doing wrong here

I also had the same problem .. ive been trying several softwares to convert video files for my N95 but the result was more or less the same.
I would suggest the following (cant guarantee it will work for you, but it worked for me)
1. Download (Install and run) ImTOO MP4 video converter 3
2. Add the file you want to convert
3. From the preset profiles, select “iPhone MPEG-4 (*.mp4)” format
4. Select your added file
5. From the right hand side menu -
under “Video”
change video size to - “320×240″
change bit rate to - “800″
under “Audio”
change bit rate to - 96 (this is really not necessary but i just like 96 :p)
6. Hit “Encode”
(Tips - If it works for you, save the above profile as “N95 8GB 320.240″ (or whatever you want)
It worked for me, the software is amazingly fast (compared to others) and the output video is ok for me (at least it works!!)
All the best!

Hi-
Thanks for the info.
While we are troubleshooting here- i set up mail for exchange and it is wokring great.
However, when i delete the email off the phone, it also deletes it off the server and my outlook. I understand they are synced, but with the phone like a blackberry, the emails would remain in outlook and on the server.
Is there a setting or something I can do so that the email when deleted from my phone does not also delete from the server and outlook?
Thanks.

I too use the ImTOO Mpeg Encoder to convert .AVI files to MPeg4’s I just use the standard MPEG4 Video’ setting,) but I still use the ‘Quicktime’ to export the movie to my phone’s memory card (using the memory card’s standalone USB2 adapter, as I have the N95-1.) The quality of the video playback seems much better from the ‘Quicktime’ export than using the ImTOO Mpeg encoder… It takes a little longer this way, but works all the same ;o)

Hi
Got the N95-1 with an 8GB Sandisk micro card (not N95-8GB phone)
firmware etc all up to date.
I love videos on my phone
NVM = pants…. don’t bother
The only decent quality, with stereo sound is what Clive posted.
“Open movie with Quicktime Pro,
File > Export
Movie to 3G > Options
Video Settings:
Video Format: H.264
Data Rate: 700kbits/s
Image Size: 320×240 (Tick preserve aspect ratio and use letterbox, you can use crop if you don’t mind a cropped image for movies)

Keyframe: Automatic
Audio:
Audio Format: AAC-LC (Music)
Data Rate: 128kbps

Output Sample Rate: 44.1kHz”
this seems to be the limit for the phone and I may drop the video bitrate down a little to see if it loads smoother.
I might even change all my saved flv movies from youtube to 3g. If you’ve not got it, get the emtube application, works a treat with wifi and you can see all youtube clips and save them.
happy videos here I come….

Each time i try to convert it with quicktime it always stops at 8% why?
Mark on 22 March 2008:
Guys use DVD Fab Platinum.
1. Open The Programme.
2. Source at the top select your file. It can be in the form of an iso or maybe a Folder that you have ripped to your Drive. You can also stick a dvd in your player and use directly from there.
3. Target. Click on the folder and select desktop. (it’s what i do) You can save it elsewhere it’s upto you.
4. In the Menu On the left DVD TO MOBILE select Cell Phone. It should by default select the main movie only in the title section. On the right you have Audio, select your audio.
5. Under that there is a subpicture section DE-SELECT this unless you want the subtitles to showup in the end file while playing it on your phone. (I didn’t de-select this the first time and was frigging annoyed to have the subtitles hardcoded into the file while playing so remember to do this.).
6. Click on Next.
7. Under task list should be your file. Click on Configure at the bottom.
8. This is important. The bit that says Device has TWO dropdown boxes. Leave the first as Cellphone. On the 2nd box, drop it down and select Nokia 93/95 (mp4). Remember to do this each time you do a file.
9. I leave everything else in that page as default. All i do is make sure the FRAME RESOLUTION is set to 320×240 which it normally is, but check just to be sure. You could also change the encoding to 2-pass which does give out a better finish film, but i’m not to fussy and usually leave it one-pass. Have a fiddle and see what you prefer. Once that is done just click on OK and then start. Leave the software alone for a while while it does it’s thing and you should have a mp4 file inside a folder created on your desktop when it’s done. Just copy that file to your my videos section on your phone and away you go.

I’ve read this yesterday and since i’ve got quicktime pro it sounded really good to try. But ever since I have been trying to get it to work but with no luck.
My question is, i run quicktime pro under windows. Does this solution also work then ?? (because i’ve not been able to find certain codecs for quicktime running on windows. they are available for mac users but not for windows users)
Any help would be appreciated

I have recently got a new N95 8gb phone. I am trying to transfer movies which are already in 3gp format from my pc to my cell using Lifeblog n nokia video manager. But i get an error saying some required codec is missing. What does that mean? After reading all the above comments I think King n Graham are facing the same problem as me. What are codecs? How do I know which codecs I need n from which site can i download them? Are they free or do u need to pay for them? I need answers to these questions. Someone PLEASE help me!

Just spent HOURS looking around for a good converter and after everything ive tried, it seems like SUPER seems like the one to go for!
It does take a long time and also quite hard to actually find!, but i can say it is well worth it and works great(AND looks amazing on my Nokie n95 8gb).

What setting do you use and does it give you a movie at fullscreen..?

I don’t think SUPER can give you full screen output but there is a way to crop the video to fit your screen with a different software. Try googling for it!
Sifte on 28 May 2008:
Apologies.
SUPER worked for me this time, last time I used Vista and could not make it to work (VISTA SUX).
with SUPER you can even crop your videos to see full screen, you just need to know how much to crop, I had a link before, will post if I can find. I like Super cz I had problems with Audio/Video Sync with other conversions but that can arise from other issues like PC config/Processor usage etc.
There is another great free software called PS3Video9. A great guy named “btc” provided his tutorial few months ago but the link has changed. the following is the working link -

Hope this helps.

The best software is MeGUI. It has its own N95 video profile. Select HE-AAC v2 for audio.

Hi there,
Why are you guys encoding with 700kbits on a 320×240 video? The old VHS size. h.264 should do great with a lot less.
After a few tests with VisualHub I have come to the conclusion that a 700mb movie at… maybe 716 x 296 pixels should be less than 250mb converted for the Nokia phone. Your goal should be good quality, small file size. Why overdo the bitrate, when it can be hard to see the difference.
Check - Mpeg4 and h.264 in VisualHub
Check - Two pass VBR
Calculate aspect ratio. Ex. 716 x 296 pixels…
716/296=2.42 -> 320/2.42=132
Result: 320×132 pixels
Set file size within 250mb for a 700mb file.
Set sound to Auto (good sound is important)
Encode!
This should result in a file well under 250mb at a bitrate around 300kbits. Quality above artifacts and with a clear image.
A finger rule for me encoding movies and TV-series to 320×240 from 600 or 700 pixel files is: File size = 36%.
That should be enough data. Don’t forget the aspect ratio.
Happy encoding!

Hey guys,
I found a lot of this quite useful but also perhaps misleading if you are using an N95 8gb with the latest Symbian OS and converting videos on a Mac (I have no idea how Quicktime Pro works on the PC). The problem I found, which seems to be a common one, was that no matter how I jiggered about with the settings, h.264 movies were coming back with either bad sound or no image. Perhaps had I had more patience I might have found the ideal setting, but from what I have read this seems to be difficult and (oddly) seems to vary.
In a last ditch attempt I tried the default settings, (although I have since bumped up kbps to 512 for better quality and switch on “preserve aspect ratio” so as not to crimp the movies) and the output MP4s play without a hitch.
This converts .AVI perfectly well (including torrents) that can be played back in the N95 8gb Realplayer app. at fullscreen in either orientation. I have yet to try it on alternative file types supported by Quicktime. The conversion rate changes a 350 meg .AVI into a 195 meg MP4.
To clarify, the settings I am using are:
File Format: MP4 (ISMA)
Video Format: Mpeg-4 (Improved)
Data Rate: 512 kbits/sec
Preserve aspect ratio using letterbox
Framerate: 30
Key Frame: every 24 frames
Quicktime Pro version 7.4.5
Intel Macbook OS 10.5.3
The Nokia is from O2 UK and is the N95 8GB Black running Symbian 0S S60 3rd Edition
Hope that helps some people
