How To: Tether Your Nokia to a Mac to Access the Net Via Bluetooth

I’ll show you how you can tether or connect your laptop or computer to your Nokia phone for internet connection via bluetooth. This is useful for accessing the internet on your Mac if there are no accessible WiFis in your area. Using these instructions, I was able to write a blog post on a highway during a road trip while connected to my Nokia N95. Thanks to Jonathan Greene for pointing me to the right direction.

First, you need to download the corresponding Modem Scripts from Ross Barkman. These are just files you need to copy to a folder in your computer. More details on that shortly. I downloaded the script that included EDGE because I have T-Mobile USA and my current Nokia N95 cannot use 3G here in the United States.

Now, copy the files into Library:Modem Scripts.

Then head to Network Preferences and select Bluetooth from the second drop down menu. In the Service Provider, put something descriptive like Mobile. Add the Access Point Name (APN) by your network provider as your phone number. Then enter the username and password. As a T-Mobile USA subsciber, I enter internet2.voicestream.com as my telephone number, and left the username and password empty.

In the Bluetooth Mode tab, pick the modem that you downloaded from above. I chose Nokia 3G CID1 script. Disable error correction and uncheck the wait for dial tone setting. Check the Show modem status in menu bar so you can connect to the modem quickly.

Also make sure that under the TCP/IP tab, Using PPP is selected.

That’s it! Hit Apply Now.

To connect to the internet, now all you have to do is click the phone icone on your top right corner and press connect.

Now you can blog during long commutes on the train, on a passenger seat on a long road trip, or in a hotel without wifi connection!

I downloaded the scripts from Ross for the Nokia 3g. There is like 12 files though. Some have a lot of text in them. And some have just weird letters and objects. My question is which one do I need to use? I am trying to tether a Nokia 6682 Cingular to my macbook.

it comes up with a message on my phone saying "subscribe to packet data first" and then it disconnects from my macbook. HELP?
  • I had bookmarked this site long ago. I recently needed to set up my Nokia again to be tethered to my MacBook pro via t-mobile. My phone is a Nokia N95 8gb and I'm running snow leopard.

I just followed the instructions here: http://www.ithinkdiff.com/how-to-use-nokia-n900...

My post on there was:wow, this was easy. Is this optimal set up? I remember before I used to get Nokia Scripts from Ross Barkman’s page (http://www.taniwha.org.uk/). But this was a new set up.

I just set up my N95 8gb to tether with my MacBook Pro running snow leopard using T-mobile over USB. I just went to http://speakeasy.net/speedtest to test out my speed. It’s 65kbps down, 83kbps up.

Anyone know what kind of limits of size you have with t-mobile before they do something to you?
  • This link to the Leopard set up doesn't work. How can I tether my Nokia N958gb to my MacBook Pro running Leopard to access the net via Bluetooth?
  • Does anyone know if there are any extra costs or anything that can come up from doing this? I just signed up for the unlimited data plan which gives me free hotspot access too - for $20.
  • Planning on trying this out w/ my new Nokia N76 that I got yesterday for use w/ Tmobile. My Laptop's currently a 16" 2.16ghz MacBook Pro. In a few days, my new laptop, a refurbished 2.2ghz MacBook Pro, is arriving and I'll be handing this laptop off to my wife to replace her aging iBook.

Also, thanks for the other link Ratkat. I'm both a) Bookmarking this page and Ratkat's suggestion as well as b) printing a .pdf of if these pages to both keep on my desktop as well as on my N76.

My secondary phone is a PPC-6700 w/ Sprint and I used to tether on that, but it would keep locking up my phone so I just kind of stopped doing that.

Hi, Can we do it the other way round? ie Connect N95 to internet using MAC AirPort as access point. This will be really useful if you are connected on internet via LAN, but needs to use IP phone (eg Fring) on your N95? Thanks..
  • @PJ on the road I was only able to get around 76kbps, but here in New York City I got 199kbps.

Hey just curious but have you tried a bandwidth test? I use www.testmy.net.
