iMovie 08 and Nokia N95, Match Made in Video Heaven
It’s now even faster to edit and share videos from our phones to the internet thanks to iMovie ‘08. In addition to Nokia having Nseries phones shooting videos at DVD-like quality at 30 frames per second and VGA size (640×480 pixels resolution), you can have good quality videos on the internet in a few minutes. For example is using my Nokia N95 for MarkTV episode 5.
You can also watch this video in DVD-like quality at blip.tv
My buddies and I were having one of our game nights, and Pictionary was getting out of control. We were loud and definitely having fun, so I knew I had to get the moment on video. Being able to hold a good quality camcorder in our pockets is still amazing to me! Noone wants to carry around a heavy and bulky camcorder the whole day every day. And that’s only one of the many features of an Nseries phone.
It’s true what Steve Jobs said at this summer’s Apple Press Conference about the new iMovie ‘08, “You can create a great looking video in less than 20 minutes.” When I came home, I connected my Nokia N95 to my Macbook Pro, which was automatically recognized and imported all the videos and photos from the night. I opened up iMovie and started editing.
For this video, it was really simple as selecting two clips, add a transition effect in between, then dragging a song from iTunes. I also added introduction and ending captions. To make sure that the background music fades down when the clips are playing and goes up when the introduction and ending text are showing, I selected the “Reduce volume of other tracks” during the clips where I want to hear what everyone is saying.

Select “Reduce volume…” to lower down the background music.
The best thing about iMovie 08 is that after I’m done editing, I simply go to the menu and click Share - YouTube. The video will be enhanced and be uploaded to thenokiablog YouTube account. The link to the video will show up once the upload is finished.

Quick upload to YouTube.
That’s really amazing. Capture, edit, and publish is so much easier now that anyone can create appealing videos. Instead of just putting up a clip of a video on the internet, we can easily add some fun stuff to it like captions, special effects, and background music. So let’s review: we now have small devices like the Nokia N95 that captures excellent videos, and then we explore our video creativity using iMovie without headaches. Nice!

Can you spot what phone is on the table in the video?
steve garfield on 4 September 2007:
What happens to the Apple TV and Computer versions of your video? Is there a way to access those on an RSS 2.0 feed?
Ninong Brown on 4 September 2007:

James @ The Creative Life on 4 September 2007:
Nice demo Mark.
iMovie 08 is starting to grow on me, I’ve yet to use it in anger, but it certainly looks like it can cut the mustard.
Mark Guim on 4 September 2007:
@Steve yes youtube supports RSS. For example, here’s the RSS feed to thenokiablog YouTube videos. For AppleTV, iPhone, and iTunes versions, you go to menu and click Share - iTunes.
@James People initially hated iMovie 08, but if you are reading what people have to say about it now, they actually like it.
Ninong Brown on 5 September 2007:

Mark — awesome post man… as a proud new owner of a macbook (less than 24 hours on OS X at this point, coming from Linux it’s quite the change!), I need to get myself another good video phone (n93i, n95)… specifically for this reason. Great job!
