Review: Watch Youtube Videos with emTube
My personal most wanted app for the Nseries phones just came out in the form of emTube! I can now search and play all the videos available on Youtube, unlike the limited selection in the Mobile Youtube site or Youtube Video Center. emTube works great especially with the built-in automatic rotation. It is my current favorite app, but it still needs a little more work.
Download emTube - YouTube player.
Ugly Icons. The main menu allows you to browse through Youtube by search, Featured, Top Rated, and Most Viewed videos. My complaint here is that the icons are not the prettiest things to look at.
What Settings? Under the settings, we are supposed to be able to adjust the default volume, start videos automatically, manually, or after downloads, and adjust cache size (I don’t know what it does). No matter how many times I change the settings, nothing seems changed after checking the settings at a later time.
Good Video Quality. The video quality looks good. Rafe Blandford from All ABout Symbian reported that emTube uses advanced decoding for playback. You can also start watching the videos even when the download is not done, but I found it is better to wait finishing the download. Playback is jerky when the download is incomplete.
Controls. Controlling the videos is simple. Up and down are volume, while left and right are for tracking back or forward. Center button is for play/pause. It would be cool if the multimedia controls on the Nokia N95 were integrated.

emTube listing of Featured and Searched videos.
Save or Favorite it. You can save the movies on the phone so you don’t have to stream it later. But we all know Youtube is not about “downloading” but all about streaming. This is where the Favorites feature come in. We can mark videos as Favorite and it will be listed on the Favorites menu for quicker access. I absolutely love this feature!
Conclusion
emTube is now my favorite app. There are currently nothing else like it that take advantage of YouTube’s library and still maintain good playback quality. With a few more tweaks and fixes, I think it will be the best app created for the Nseries.
Pros: Good video quality. Auto-rotation. All Youtube videos are available.
Cons: Cannot change settings. Dedicated multimedia control buttons on the Nokia N95 does not work. No settings for default access point. Ugly icons.

How do we know there is no mal-ware in this app?
The website doesn’t really say it’s open source, just that it’s freeware.
Has anyone with a packet/traffic sniffer checked out what sites this app contacts?
Mark Guim on 25 January 2008:
good question. I never thought of that, @michael

Yes, I was worried about the possibility of mal-ware too.
