How To: Easy and Best Video Quality Conversion Using VisualHub on Mac

I previously wrote how to convert videos for Nokia Nseries phones, but now I’ve been using a better solution for Mac users with phones capable of playing excellent quality H.264 videos like the Nokia N93i, Nokia N82, and all versions of the Nokia N95. VisualHub creators made sure to make the program very easy to use. Take a look at the How-To.

VisualHub
VisualHub settings for High-Quality-Video-capable Nseries phones.

Step 1. Open up VisualHub and choose conversion to iTunes optimized for iPod. Also check the H.264 encoding option.

Step 2. That’s it! Just drag any video files into VisualHub and click Start. HUH?! That’s it? Yep, I told you it was simple.

Background

The Nokia N82, Nokia N95, and the Nokia N93i’s movie player, RealPlayer, can all handle video compresed with MPEG-4 AVC also known as H.264, which has become the preferred compressions for best quality and low file sizes. It’s also good to know that these devices can only handle the baseline profile under H.264. These properties are similar to the videos available for the iPods (not the iPhone).

All the converted videos will end in .MP4 extension. Someone may ask why I chose iTunes instead of MP4 tab. The reason for that is the H.264 checkbox under the MP4 tab will not support the Baseline profile, so it won’t be playable on the phone. You’ll hear audio, but just see a black screen.

Question. My question to my Mac readers is how do you convert your videos for your Nokia devices? Do you use VisualHub? Is there another app I need to try out?

  1. You could also try iSquint, the predecessor of VisualHub - it only supports iPod conversion, but that should be the same thing, and it’s freeware.

There is also ffmpegX, which has more options, but it’s a bit outdated and not as easy to use.

  2. It has always been about Visual Hub for me. It’s fast, the quality is second to none, it can handle just about anything… just make sure you pick up FairMount too!

Other than that I sometimes use Quicktime and if I’m just doing straight up rips of DVD’s I’ll go for Handbrake.

  3. you are using quite an old visualhub. I have got more itunes options like: ipod classic, ipod 5g, ipod nano and iphone. which one should i use?

  4. Thanks for reminding me @jeroen. Looks like I’ll need to update my visualhub and see what I need to change in this post

visualhub works great, theres only one problem when it comes to playing the widescreen films on my n95 8g it squeezes the film on to the screen and its hard to watch.
