Testing Nokia Sports Tracker With The Nokia N95-3 During Vacation

I’m testing the Nokia Sports Tracker on the Nokia N95-3 during my vacation where I’ll be visiting Canada, West Coast USA, then Mexico. For my first stop in Edmonton, I turned the application on from the car ride starting near the airport. Sports Tracker recorded data like speed, and location. I’ll post up a How-To later on to explain how I did it, but I basically exported the data from Sports Tracker to Google Maps so I can embed the map in this blog post.

During this vacation, I’ll be using Sports Tracker on the Nokia N95-3 at various times so I can mark some lines on the map where I’m currently located and headed. The map above is draggable, and contains some points provided by Sports Tracker like the fastest point, slowest point, and altitude.

  2. Your trip using the N95 should be interesting. I’m considering the N95, and wanted to use the Sports Tracker when I cycle. I have a couple of questions when using the Sports Tracker. Do have to slide the phone open when using the GPS? Can you turn the screen off while traveling to conserve battery life? When I cycle I want the unit to be as portable as possible. Not having to slide the phone open to show the keypad would be nice. The second question relates to the amount of time the phone can stay alive without a charge. I do day trips of around 5 - 8 hrs. The last thing I need is for the GPS to die during a ride. I only look at GPS data after the days ride, rarely during.

  3. Sliding the N95 open helps get better GPS signal. If closed, the signal gets lost easier. The battery definitely drains faster with Sports Tracker on while taking pictures and Shozu in the background doing some geotagging.

  5. Mark, I just bounced over to your other blog. The one with the Photos and geotracking. Your right those photos are very nice, considering they’re from a cell phone. Have you had a chance to try the video?
