How To: S60 Multiple Tabs Web Browsing Using Nokia’s Ovi Multimedia Menu

I discovered while playing with the multimedia menu on the Nokia N95 8GB that it opens links as new tabs on the web browser. Combine that with the S60 Browser Shortcuts Key #5 to switch between the tabs very quickly, and now you have easy tabbed-browsing! This tip should also work with other Nseries phones featuring the new multimedia menu; the Nokia N81 and Nokia N82.

Intro

There is no documented button or option that lets us open new windows or tabs on the S60 browser. However, the internet tile of the multimedia menu lists your bookmarks and opens the link as a new tab instead of changing the main window.

Setup

Arrange the tiles on the multimedia menu so that the Internet tile is the first tile that shows up after pressing the button. This is not required, but it makes it a lot quicker.

That’s basically it. If you want to open a new tab, just press the multimedia button. As I mentioned in my S60 Browser Shortcut Key Guide, #5 lists all open windows. Just scroll left/right to switch between windows. The top of the page tells you how many windows are currently open.
