The First 10 Applications I Install On My Nokia Phones

What’s good about the S60-powered Nokia phones like the Nseries I mostly use is that they are like computers: you can install applications. I go through a few phones for testing and review, so I’m accustomed to starting fresh and installing applications all the time. I’ll list the first 10 applications I install on my phones. I hope this list helps out the new users.

Here are the first 10 applications I install in no particular order. Nine out of ten of these applications are free to download.

Google Search

Instead of opening up the web browser to Google.com, I simply press the pencil button on my Nokia N95 and a Google search form appears on my home screen. Search results show up on the web browser. It is free and can be downloaded at mobile.google.com from your phone.

Share Online 3.0

Your phone most likely came with an outdated Share Online application. Upload your photos online after taking them, but new in the 3.0 version is the added feature of automatically downloading photos from your Flickr/Ovi friends and ability to add or read comments instantly. It is free and can be downloaded from Nokia sharing and blogging.

Nokia Maps 2.0 beta

Your phone most likely came with Nokia Maps 1.0. Download the 2.0 beta version for nicer graphics and the new walk-pedestrian navigation. This is also free to download.

Sports Tracker Beta

Record and share your run, walk, or hike on sports tracker and get information such as distance, location tracking, and other pertinent data on your phone. You can use it for other things such as creating position art. this is a free download.

Qik

Stream videos live online with Qik. This is the fastest way to get your videos online. Yet another cool application for free.

Shozu

Unlike Share Online, Shozu can do automatic uploads of pictures and videos right after taking them. Shozu can also upload to multiple sites at once. This application is free to download.

Calcium

A simple and easy to use calculator that you need to replace the calculator that came with your phone. Calcium is another free download.

Goosync

Synchronize your google calendar with your phone’s calendar. It doesn’t matter what device you use, but if you have access to the internet and add events, meetings, and appointments in Google calendar, Goosync lets you synchronize it with your phone. The free version does not allow To-do list and contacts synchronization.

Walking Hotspot

Turn your phone into wifi hotspot with Walking Hotspot. Go online with your iPod touch or internet tablets on the go while using your phone’s internet connection. Yet another free download.

Handy Taskman

If there’s only one application to recommend, Handy Taskman is that application. By default, holding the menu button shows your current running applications three at a time. Install Handy Taskman for a bigger view of the list for switching, force quit frozen applications, and display your current RAM and storage space. This application costs $25.

Thoughts

I listed the first 10 applications I install to help out the new users. I’m interested in what other long-time S60 and Nokia users install first. List your applications in the comments below or blog a post on your site with your applications and link to this post for a pingback.

    4.Y-browser

    6.Parlingo

    9.Conversation
    10.Opera Mini
  • I don't have 10 but for my black N82 (you'll love it, Viipottaja :D), I got the Large Clock Screensaver (http://www.symbian-freeware.com/download-large-...) and it is really good for times when you just need to see the time. One of the faults with the N82 is that it is awfully hard to see the time when it is on screensaver or power-saving mode.

That and Opera Mini too. :)
  • Dimilaz
    1. RoadSync - can't imagine a phone with out push email
    2. TomTom Mobile - this is a must for Navigation.
    3. HandyClock - wakes me up everyday.
    4. Opera Mini 4.1 - have to agree with Stefan
    5. SMS - No comments…
    6. Advanced Phone Lock - Security and my data is extremely important.
    7. Windows Live - I still use Hotmail
    8. Calcium
    9. Bloove - back up
    10. Google Maps
  • Giles
    1. Handy Taskman. This has to be first so that I can see ram and memory useage from the word go! I find this knowledge to be the best diagnostic tool later on when I've completely corrupted the phone with all my shenanigans.

    2. Y-Browser

    3. Mobireader

    4. Quickoffice 4.5

    5. Nokia Maps

    6. Coreplayer

    7. Widsets

    8. Mobitubia and emTube (emTube for downloading and Mobitubia for watching)

    9. Opera mini

    10. Fring

Jeez, this shoulda been the first 15 things...
  • Just added mine.
  • I just made my list too.
  • Marc
    + SkyQuikey
    + HandyTaskman
    + Opera Mini
    + ShareOnline
    + Conversation
    + Gizmovoip
    + Google Maps

    That's it.

(Tried but removed Jaiku, Shozu, Gmail, Fring).
  • winthont
I only have two: Nimbuzz and Maps
  • thanks to Gerry for putting Palringo in his Top 10. we really appreciate it. And, watch this space for more updates and functions during the summer!

  • I love to upload some games first, like GlobalRace and the N-Gage application with the trial games to my N95 8GB.
  • Thanks everyone for the recommendations. Looks like we have a few applications in common. @Mike I have used flixwagon, but I prefer Qik.
  • Did mine earlier today... don't think the trackback worked though, so here it is....
  • Viipottaja,
You can specify an "ovi email address" that you get from ovi. check their upload optios on their website. you can make this your one click destination in shozu. thats how i do it.

i can't believe nobody mentioned Y-Browser or Slick IM.

oh and Mark, you gotta try out Flixwagon. Let me know if you can't get the alpha and I'll hook you up.
  • Viipottaja
I have not use Shozu in a while. Can you have it upload your pics automatically to Ovi as well? I would like to try to consolidate my online pics etc. to Ovi.

Ps. My N82 Black should come tomorrow.. YIPPIKAIYEE (or however that is spelled)!!! :)
