New Firmware Update For North American Nokia N95 8GB (N95-4) Brings Different Font

Firmware update version 20.2.005 became available to the North American Nokia N95 8GB, and sources have noted there’s not that many changes. Other than faster camera start-up, I also noticed the font has changed. It looks like it got shorter and more jagged than the old version. I took a few photo comparisons of the two versions for comparison.

The newer font is not as smooth as the older font.

Tinier font allows more words per line as showed in Symbian-Guru mobile site.

Thoughts

I’m getting used to it, but I preferred the previous font. It was more readable in my opinion. The new font allows more text to be displayed on screen, but a few stepbacks were taken to cater it.

Did you update your Nokia N95 8GB (N95-4)? Is the font bothering you as much as it is bothering me? I’m starting to get used to it.

  1. Hi,

As i post in another blogger post, after 1 day of use I noticed:
    - mailbox access is FASTER with lot of emails (no delay now)
    - overall performance seems a little bit faster (just a little)
    - camera is certainly faster
    - battery: for sure, is not improved at least in my case. Mid day usually had full battery, today was almost empty. Maybe due to all the software re-installing… will c tomorrow

I also had a problem after installing. The phone wont register itself on the GSM network (only in 3G). I re-formatted and when choosing only GSM I get no signal. I had to register the phone MANUALLY.

Did I mention the nasty font? - font is HORRIBLE, mainly because make the screen look smaller (I’m sorry, but the previous font was one thing I valued). The impact on the overall UI is negative from my point of view. Yet, I have to say that in WEB BROWSING the new font might came on handy… MIGHT for now :)

  2. dang! n95-4 got new firmware??? what about the n95-3???

  3. @randie: the n95-3 had his update a couple of days BEFORE the n95-4.

Sure you will be the post within the last ten days on this blog.

Now, they are both at the same firmware level.

  4. I didn’t really get to play with the old FW… but when I updated from 1.2.011 to 20.2.005 was that a normal “jump”? seems ok, the font actually I did notice, but it didn’t really bother me, maybe you guys just got used to it?

I’m coming from an 82 there are a few things that I prefer the 82 for, but i’ll write more as i compare… this screen is A-Mazing and having more fit, even if it’s a bit smaller, it ok by me… it’s really sexy though! need to play with it more!

  5. Yup! Finally got d upd8 for my n95-3! TY!

  6. The font is highly improved at small sizes but looks horrible in large, bolded sizes. The best examples are Share Online 3.0 (for small fonts) and N-Gage (for the bold).

In-between these two sizes, it is a little weird. The font looks much worse in Web than it does in the standard lists (e.g., the Messaging main screen).

Whether I like it the new font or not entirely depends on which app I’m using.

  7. “Now, they are both at the same firmware level.”

But they don’t have the same software features. For example, the N95-4 with this latest firmware release now has native support for Chinese, something I’ve been waiting for. Alas, again no love for the N95-3.

  8. Yes, love for the N95-4. Love the Chinese support for it as well. But for some reason the N95-3 didn’t get Chinese support.

    I hope next update.

  9. Where can I download it. Mine is a v12. When i try to update through the software updater, it said that I have the Newest version??!

  10. There ought to be a health warning on mobile phones as I am sure the manufacturers are trying to blind us all by using ever smaller fonts.

I also this font details should be included in the specifications.

  11. I have two Nokia N95 8GB (RM-320) phones and using the Nokia Software Updater one would update and the other one didnt have the update shown ! strange
Recommend the update if you can get it
Have seen no problem with the Video / Camera functions unlike one other I read about
if your screen stops auto rotate then

Tools / Settings / General / Personalisation / Display / Rotate Screen .. Set to Automatic

  12. What the hell are Nokia doing. They are so concerned with getting more information on the screen that they easily sacrifice many possible sales by not offering User Selectable Fonts like Blackberry does on all its models.

There are many older people with reduced eyesight that they simply dismiss with the size of their fonts let alone reduce the size further.

Wake up Nokia and widen your customer base by offering User Selectable Fonts..!
