The iPhone has plenty of apps which ensure that travel is greener – one right off the top of my head is the version of Google Maps you can see on your phone, which saves from having to buy seperate maps of each destination you visit, resulting in a lower carbon footprint.

I used to be the kind of person who used a pen and a piece of paper for everything. My wallet was always filled with so many things I didn't need anymore. Every business card I received was in my purse because I didn't know when I'd need it so I carried them all around. Last time I was in vacation I finally decided to go to a travel agency and used the services offered by Norwegian Cruise. Because the city Nokia, where the manufacturer of the phones first appeared, is in Finland, close to Norway, we each received a PDA and instructions on how to use it. The reason this happened was because we had GPS and other instructions uploaded on each PDA so we could easily find what interested us or our way back to the hotel. I thought that was indeed a good idea and it really helped us a lot because it was way easier to find something rather than looking on a map. Besides that, no more clutter in my purse. No more fliers on every single place and maps and notes. I had all of them there on that small device. That's what I call "technology meets our needs".

When we moved here in Sydney my husband and I stored a copy of all our passports and other travel docs on our mobile phones too in case we loose any of our printed copies.

Due to the advance in technology people start living their lives on a phone or pocket pc instead of the real world. Some features of these phones are very useful but not to me. I spend my vacations on carnival cruise ships and I let the captain worry about maps and itineraries.

It’s a bit rubbish though, isn’t it? Give the green treatment to a top-of-the-line phone line the N95 and people would be interested.. give the green treatment to a mass volume 1xxx series device and people would be interested, and it might do a little good.

I’ve been using pdf files of my itineraries and other necessary documents for the past year and enjoyed the light travel, quick access to the files at any time and for security I always use advance phone lock in case I loose my phone. Think before you print!

@dukeswharf Yes a cloud would be a great supplement however, internet access while prolific is not everywhere and may be a bit slow in some cases. I’d hate to be downloading a large PDF over EDGE or worse yet GPRS. Thanks for the suggestion, this too could be helpful.

Altrenatively you could utilise a Cloud based service, such as SugerSync.com, and download the required document(s) as and when required.

Doing so would aleviate the potential security issues associated with carrying important documents on any one device, as you could simply delete the said document after use. Of course the relaibilty of the Cloud service itself would need to be factored into that security equation!
