Updated: Top 10 Applications I Install On My Nokia S60 Phones
Last May, I wrote the first 10 applications I install on my S60 Nokia phones. Five months later, my list have gone through some changes. Have a look to see what dropped out and what got added. This list should help out the newcomers to S60.
Currently, here are the first 10 applications I install on my s60-powered Nokia phones in no particular order. You can also read my older list from May 2008.
Nokia Email
I absolutely love the new Nokia Email. It notifies me automatically whenever a new email comes in. I no longer have to keep refreshing webpages to check for my mail.
Joikuspot
Joikuspot turns your phone in to a wifi hotspot. You don’t need to be limited to using your laptop at home or Starbucks. The premium version even allows you to password protect the connection so noone else can leech off you. Take a look at my demo of Joikuspot.
Shazam
Most of the applications on this list are useful, but Shazam is amazing. It lets me know the title and artist of songs playing in the background whether I’m in the car, mall, or the club. Just let the phone listen to a few seconds of the song and let it do its magic.
Handy Taskman
If there’s only one application to recommend, Handy Taskman is that application. By default, holding the menu button shows your current running applications three at a time. Install Handy Taskman for a bigger view of the list for switching, force quit frozen applications, and display your current RAM and storage space. More thoughts on Handy Taskman.
SkyeQuiKey
I type the first few words of contacts, applications, or bookmarks on the main display for quicker access to what I need. I can easily get lost within the S60 menu hierarchy, so this is really useful. Take a look at my video demo of SkyQuiKey.
Qik
Stream videos live online with Qik. This is the fastest way to get your videos online. Yet another cool application for free.
Google Search
Instead of opening up the web browser to Google.com, I simply press the pencil button on my Nokia N95 8GB and a Google search form appears on my home screen. Search results show up on the web browser. It is free and can be downloaded at mobile.google.com from your phone.
Nokia Maps 2.0
Google does so much better with searching places, but Nokia Maps gives me turn by turn voice navigation. Check your phone if you have the latest version and download the update from maps.nokia.com if needed.
Shozu
Shozu can do automatic uploads of pictures and videos to a lot of places. I use this to post my photos to Flickr and Facebook at the same time. This application is free to download.
Google Maps
Nokia Maps (see above) is not useful without this app from Google. I need Google Maps to find places, save as favorite, then navigate on Nokia Maps.
Your Top 10
Tell me your current top 10 applications. I have more applications to recommend, but I want to follow my own rule and provide only the first 10. This should help out the newcomers to S60 to find out the absolute best apps to install for their phones.
You can tell me in the comments below, or write it on your blog and link to this post. Your blog will automatically send a pingback and get listed below, but if it doesn’t just write a comment with your link.

OVI from Nokia I record loads of short videos, upload them to OVI for my girlfriend to watch

what up… Shazam functions fine on my e71 US version… go to the link above on this page… And in the article re. Shazam, just choose to go to mosh and download it right from there. The interface is a little out of wack–meaning it’s not the most visually polished app as, according to Shazam’s site, it may work for… BUT does not list the e71 as ‘compatible.’ However… IT ABSOLUTELY WORKS!

I don’t think I use too many apps - I’ve tried a lot but here are the ones I like best:
SlingPlayer: The SlingPlayer was a great addition to my N95. I bought a Sling Box a year or two before I got a N95-3 and it was more gimmicky than useful… but with the N95-3 and an unlimited data plan + 3g coverage I could really watch TV on my phone! It came in handy when a friend was missing her favorite show and I simply went to my slingplayer and recorded it with my comcast dvr! Best of all, I used it when I was my girlfriend’s grandmothers place who only had bunny ears on her TV… I could get really good quality full screen cable sent from my phone to the TV!
Man I never felt my phone so hot after 2 hours of doing sling.
vBag: This is a bit gimmicky because you’ll just get a grotesque hand if you play Gameboy advanced games that require lots of finger movement (ie: Street Fighter) but it kicks butt at games like Advanced Wars and Final Fantasy Tactics. There’s litterally thousands of free GBA games out there that look great on a Nokia phone… just have to pick the right ones that kill your thumbs!
Opera Mini: I actually loved the Nokia browser when I first got it but it really isn’t better than the Opera Mini. I actually use Opera on my PCs (before Firefox ever was released) and so I have a “brand loyalty” to them… but aside from that, their browser is just fantastic. I sometimes try to edit my site by logging into the web interface and nokia’s browser would keep telling me I can’t connect to it but Opera allows me to.
Yahoo Go: I have Yahoo mail and it’s super fast to check it this way instead of going into Opera Mini and getting it.
Rotate Me: I just have it always on. Yea sometimes I have to shake it to go back the way I want it but it’s really useful when viewing pictures.
