Upgrading From Nokia N82 Has Me Confused
Hello, Bonjour, Sat Shri Akal, Namaste, Salaam! Behold everyone Dr. is in the house. Yes, that’s right! I’m Dr. Anirudh Sharma aka Gomcoite from The S60 Blog. Thank you Mark for having me here. Recently Mark upgraded to his New Nokia N85 Euro/Asia Model off a great deal on eBay. I too am round the same corner and am looking for that perfect device to upgrade from my present Nokia N82.
Having Nokia announce a whole lot of new devices to hit the market has confused me, but having you all enthusiastic Nokia fans here will sure make my job easier and I’m sure you all will give me a great feedback on which one should I pick.
At present the only thing that I don’t like about my Nokia N82 is its keypad and blocky size. On whole I have had a great experience with my N82. Simply love the 5 MP AF Carl Ziess camera which to me has the best picture quality amongst all Nokia devices at present and which is the reason why I got it. I sure missed on the lighter side of things like N-Gage which is practically not as fun on the N82 as it would have been on an Nokia N95 8GB because of it dual slide design.
Choices
Analyzing the choices I have as of now would be the Nokia N96 and N85. No Eseries for me as they totally lack a good camera and are studded with a 2.5 mm jack which I totally hate. Now the big question, Is it right time to upgrade? Will switching from N82 to one of these be worth? I really like the N96 with its huge screen and memory but I don’t want to miss on the microUSB charging in the N85.
If I wait for a while then I guess the 5800 XpressMusic is also not bad as I would love its huge screen and touch interface but this would make me end up with poor camera optics. N79 may also turn out to be a good choice as it is the sleekest Nseries to date and has all the latest features including the Xpress On covers. Oh boy, the more I think, the more I get confused.
Advice
So with all these new devices coming in a pulsatile manner have made my neurons fire in circles. What do you guys feel? Have you been planning on buying a new device and have felt the same? Or were you clear on what you wanted? Share you views and help me figure out the right one for me.

I have an N82 and I don’t think its time to upgrade.
I’m waiting for the next generation S60 with xenon. I won’t settle for anything less.

I totally agree with you Al, but Xenon only works for pictures and not video, thus rendering no flash for the latter.

Couldn’t agree more. I’m holding out for the next Nokia ‘photo-centric’ handset.
Xenon flash is a must for me after using the N82.

Go for the 5800, that screen is just amazing. Browsing in it will be a dream, I am sure the S60 5th edition will be a great success and will bring many new and exciting things. The price is also tempting.
I had the N82 and currently the N95 8GB, I am just waiting for the TUBE, as soon as any store has it I am buying it.

If i get the tube i would end up with 3.2 MP which i don’t want to but the touch interface with new improved graphics looks promising.
I wish it were a little more sleek and had a metal finish which would have legitimated its compromise on optics.
Im not pretty sure on the Tube as i feel better Nseries Touch S60 are on way.

I think you should get the best one now, and sell it when the next best thing comes out.
By the time the Nseries touch actually comes out, they’ll announce something coming right after that’s going to make you want to wait yet again. You’ll be waiting forever.

Sounds good but will a couple of months wait be worth?

So what do you reckon I should go for, personally I like the N96 for its big screen and huge space… though N85 has USB charging and OLED screen, but I can comprise with it… so what you say? and of course in India, new version of N96 is going to be release soon with +8GB card package..??

Same dilemma..
I’m very happy with the N82. was not able to decide whether I should go for the N85, or wait for the N Series Touchscreen.
Can’t we have an NSeries with Xenon for photo and Dual LED flash for video? [Wishful thinking :-)]
As an aside, the N85 is way too expensive in India at the moment, retailing at Rs 33,000 ($660).
I’d rather wait a while.

The N82 is such a good camera phone, Im investing in one shortly. No doubt, there will be another NSeries device with Xenon soon.

I do not want to keep waiting. I am waiting to see whether they can put in a 5MP cam in their touchscreen. 3.2 and 5MP differ when you take a print out. Just that. No other expectations.
I am sure I will go for a touchscreen. I am sure I will go for a s60 touchscreen. I am sure I will go for a Nokia S60 touchscreen. I want 5MP but if that is just too exorbitant, then I will buy 5800.
So no confusions, pretty clear in my mind…..actually!
And By the way, N85 in India is retailing at INR 27,290.

yea but the Tube doesn’t have the n-gage gaming like the n85. that also matter. espeasialy since you can play the games as if it were a psp or something.

Hey Vish,
I don’t know. I’ve heard 4 different prices since yesterday. Prices are yet to stabilize, I think. I’ll wait for Diwali to pass, plus will have to sell off the N82 at a decent price too..

Thanks fellas. As for now I will pick 5800 XM as soon as it goes on sales. The device has a huge screen and is the first touch S60 5th Edition. The price too is pretty okay. It should be a good change from the present S60 3rd Edition.

So you don’t mind missing N-Gage?

Gomcoite on 25 October 2008
N-Gage would have to evolve to fit onto the touch interface of the s60 5th edition so i expect it to be more or less on the likes on nintendo ds. besides 2009 will see a lot of 5 editions so n-gage ppl should be working already on this
till now what i knw is that n-gage is working on 5800 with accelerometer tech like the iPhone.

hmm… Both the devices lack the flash lite3 yet. And I don’t think there is any update regarding the same. (correct me if I’m wrong). So no youtube, and either ways other kinda surfing is done on any other phone.

In my opinion, as with other people, waiting for a nseries touch device is probably best. Something similar like SE G900 would be nice, like a bar type phone with a touch screen. I use wifi quite a lot on my phone and touch makes it much easier to surf.

I am having similar thoughts.
I will probably go for the N85, but I am tempted by the Samsung Innov8 - the images produced by the 8 mp camera looks amazing.

Patience is a virtue. I am. Wait for a nseries version of the 5800 that will carry a (praying here) 5 MP camera, hopefully with a miniqwerty.
The N82 is a great lowbudget nseries with all the trimmings you need until the next step. If money is irrelevant. N85 is the best sofar, I guess. But its not worth upgrading the N82 I think.

A Quick Update: Just got hold of all the three devices viz. N96, N85 and N79.
Here is a quick picture. http://share.ovi.com/media/gomcoite.NokiaN79vsN85vs/gomcoite.11535 I have been playing around with them for sometime. Will come up with the review shortly.
Still have no word on 5800 as yet but i expect it around first week of December.

Hi,
having an N82, I don’t see a reason to upgrade to any other phone. There is nothing else you could do with a N85 or N96 that you can’t with N82.
If you were dissatisfied with symbian and would like to change to another SO I would see you point, but going from nokia to nokia with so little differences doesn’t seem as a wise move.
If it’s just that you are bored of your mobile phone, I will sugest to think less about it (it’s just a f.. phone!) and have another hobby (padel, running, MTBiking..) that frees your mind
Or if you want to remain focused on phones, just write programs for them.. it’s fun and you get to know so much better the devices and their inner workings. J2ME is a fantastic way to start with. Hope it helps
