If you updated the firmware, used selective apps to manage memory, battery life, etc, it is a good robust phone. It has worked well for me and I travel around the world with it.

Ah NOKIA the so called awsome mobile phone maker. atleast thats what i thought after owning around 5 nokia phones. I always had my cell phone dropping from the height of a man to the floor especially tiles. My phones never broke becuz of that. But then when i was considering touch screen, its latest in fashion and blah blah, then its nokia i thought it can still keep falling and i can laugh at iphone owners. but this time nokia cheated, making a chinese phone with no shock research and development and pricing it for 550 pounds is just shit man. I spent my entire one month salary on it, used it 5 months. once it dropped vibration stopped function for about a week. then again it fell on CARPET, this time neither the vibration nor does my touch screen function. Its with the guarrantee guys and they return it untouched. Now i have to pay for it. The camera is the worst in the history of cell phones, who thinks u can actually see a captured pic when theres 2 bright leds next the cam? and how will be the image clear after turning them off? Serious waste of money, if nokia wants people stop using nokia, then NOKIA plz go ahead. 1 more thing, my bro bought n900. the phone doesnt catch the sim at all, we replaced 2 phones at the best nokia store both of them had the same problem.

I challenge nokia to build the best phones again!!! with shock deterrent compatibility and user friendliness, otherwise sell the software to someone worthy of a try.

Well I have owned about 12 Nokia phones starting with my 2128 in 1994 with a 2160, 6160, 6161, 3300, 3390, 3220, 6130, 8910, 8860,8390, N95 and finally my N97. I have been very happy with most of them and a couple had some small build quality issues but nothing to make me hate Nokia. Until now. My N97 is a boat anchor. Right now I cannot even turn it on because I let the battery die last night, its been on the charger for 2 hours with the charging light lit. When I try to turn it on i feel the buzz but nothing lights up. I have experienced this a few times and know that it will eventually turn on. I have to re-boot this phone several times a day to make it work properly. I have reset the phone and re-loaded the firmware several times. Most of the time bluetooth will not connect unless I switch bluetooth off then back on again, it then makes a connection immediately. If I listen to the FM radio I first have to put it on "offline mode" than back on again otherwise it cannot lock in any stations, after a few hours the frequencies start to "wander" and it randomly tunes in other stations until I put it into offline then back to normal mode and the tuner works again for a few hours. The phone drops calls randomly in places that my other Nokia phones have not (other than my 3220 which also did this). Sometimes the screen fails to light up when unlocking it via the slider, many times the charging indicator scrolls even when it is unplugged, the lens of the camera has been destroyed by the "protective" slider, WiFi won't connect to certain types of routers (ones that my N95 had no issue with), there is not enough room on the c drive and the processor is too slow. I could go on and on about the problems with this phone.

I agree with rakeshmisri, this is the worst phone ever produced by Nokia, especially considering the $600 US price tag. I called customer service and the only thing they could tell me to do was send it in for service which will not fix the serious design flaws that this phone has (not enough RAM, slow processor) and certainly will not improve the horrible OS as I already have the latest firmware version. When I sent an email in to complain they claim to have lost it even though I got a confirmation email from them saying it was received. Unless Nokia comes up with a really incredible solution for me this will be the last Nokia I ever own.

N97 SUCKS! I made the greatest mistake in my life for buying this hopeless phone in Jun2009. After 4 months, I sold it away before I smash it against the wall. The features look apparently promising and existing but they are not working properly! Silly phone kept hanging, double images appear on the text, restore programme could not restore backup data which were working fine prior to backup. White model has a serious design problem - the backlight camouflages with white light in the room or moving vehicle and the alphabet on the keypad were hardly visible at all. Sensor not working sensibly. The Sims game bundled with the phone is the silliest touchscreen game we'd ever seen - imagine having 4 arrows on the screen and we have to tap on the arrow to move the character left right up or down. It really makes us wonder if the designers know what's a touchscreen for and how it should work.

Well, I hope iPhone (or any other phone out there) will KILL the N97 before it kills our sanity.

Shame on you Nokia - your products and support have gotten from bad to beyond hope!!

Hey buddy - I recommend that you check out OVI, and download Opera Mini browser (free) - it lets you copy and paste, multibrowse, caches browsed pages... etc... check out youtube, and you'll know why N97 is quite good :-)

good morning ! I have not been following the n97 threads... and was clearing my mailbox.. to chance your belated response.
so here is our take... your feedback confirms.. operation successful, patient dead.
we had bought the n97's in Aug... and it took a good 80 days for the firmware 2. I cannot comment on the firmware (post release) as by the time firmware 2 got released I have moved back to other devices & os (non nokia) for my business (and personal use). No one can wait so long... unless they get paid for waiting..
Thanks to Nokia to agreeing to the issues on the n97 and giving the right resolution. Thank you for your wise words

Well not all software is free, like the PDF reader and office reader. They are 3rd party software. It is something consumers are not used to but it doesn't mean that it is unfair. But I think a sensible thing for Nokia to have done was to give a store credit (say $20) to spend at the Ovid store, as this would have increased the traffic. Unfortunately they didn't go this way.

What I do recommend Nokia to do is to offer N900 upgrade to the N97 consumers at a special discounted price if they really want the N900 to take off.

Hi shinn,

1) -
2) tilt the phone just a little bit more so that the sensor will straight away recognise that you have changed orientation.
3) I haven't had the phone switching off randomly. I ask you then contact your retailer or Nokia about this as this appears to be a fault.

You gave questions as your reasons, and these are not rhetorical questions, so you did not give 34 reasons - FACT!

1) So what if you can't do cut and paste across all applications. Did the manual say it can? So therefore it is not broken. And no I do not agree with you that it is a shortcoming! So don't blame Nokia for your insufficient research before you got the phone.

2) Once the lock mode is on, the screen remains in the same state. The lock mode is always in a portrait mode. So I don't see why you have a problem with it. So what if it changes from landscape to portrait as at the time the lock activates, and for the state to remain in portrait mode when the lock is activated. Please understand what lock does.

And no they are not a list of 34 reasons... as some of them are questions (not reasons)!

No you are not right in saying "Nokia is experimenting with consumers money" because you make it sounds cynical. It is so obvious that all companies use consumers money which is called 'revenue' (hello??) for business activities which likely includes research and development - which involves experimenting... (hello??).

Sorry, I do buy your points as it does not convince me.

Your question of why the n97 is worth the money is very subjective. I think it is worth the money because it is a physically well built phone, stylish and does the general things that I want.

You mentioned shortcomings? what shortcomings? Does the phone not work according to what it has been designed to do? People seem to compare it against the iPhone and therefore have certain expectation of the n97. But that doesn't mean it has shortcomings... did Nokia promise that it would have certain features in the n97 which are not currently implemented?

You mentioned firmware... well most phones have firmware upgrades... even the iPhone. And what a load of rubbish you said about firmware 2 does not talk about optimisations... the speed is improved (e.g. scrolling) and also better memory management.

And you just contradicted yourself:
"What has pissed off most consumers is the lack of timely response from nokia"... well did they not release a firmware upgrade, which you mentioned a paragraph before.

Please please get your facts right before you post...

Hi,

I own a Nokia N97, iPhone 3GS and also had an iPhone 3G.

N97 is good as a general non-multimedia phone. If you want multimedia, my advice to you is to get the N900 or iPhone 3GS.

For the record, I prefer the N97 over the iPhone as I am not really into multimedia on the phone. And having a dedicated qwerty keyboard feels great.
