Nokia 5800 For North America Arriving Feb. 26th for $399

I’ve been checking with a major distributor frequently hoping to see the touchscreen Nokia phone that first appeared on Dark Knight; the Nokia 5800. Tonight it finally showed up on their system along with the suggested retail price. The Nokia 5800 for North America’s 3G network will be available to US retailers around Feb. 26th with the suggested price of $399 USD. It is up to the retailers how much they want to charge.

Nokia 5800 nam 1

I’m thinking of getting one because I’m curious of the touch interface. I prefer buttons, but that wish won’t be granted until the Nokia N97 comes in the next few months.

The European version has been out and Nokia even announced they’ve sold at least a million units of the Nokia 5800 already. Do you think it will be successful here in the US? Will you be getting one?

  • Great news, but that's kinda lame that it's $399, when the Euro version is $350 at the flagship stores. What's with the $50 premium for a phone that should have been launched months ago? Bad form, Nokia.
  • I was surprised about the price too, expecting retail of $350.
  • Tobi
Anyone know when this will be available on Rogers canada? And for some reason the ebay prices are still ridiculuos
  • I was hopping for the $350 price. The 5800 will be a secondary phone for me and i don't think i can justify $400 for a secondary phone.
  • @William J Sisti, I can't disclose the wholesale price, but by the looks of it, the usual places will probably have them around $360-380
  • And all I'd like to know is when will Nokia start releasing devices that support T-Mobile's 3G as well. This is just a plain garbage what Nokia is doing at this point. It doesn't take much to smack in a radio that would support it. I don't see at&t subscribers ditching their phones left and right in order to get Nokias so why is Nokia turning into at&t's bitch???? Try T-Mobile and you will have much larger purchase base due to the fact that T-Mobile has a crappy offering. I switched to Android and sadly I have to say that I miss S60 less day by day. Yes...I miss flash and Sling player but those will come (hopefully soon). I just hope that by that time and when the updates for Android start pouring in Nokia will not be left in the dark and suddenly say that they are failing in North America.

which service carrier is lucky enough to get this phone?

    I found the following article

Given that most of the world won't see Nokia's 5800 XpressMusic until 2009, you may be better off just forcing yourself to overlook this here review until you can snag one without importing. If you're just too impatient for all that, however, you should know that an early critique of the affectionately dubbed Tube deemed it mighty impressive. Call quality was solid, the OS was stable in most areas, and the display was a joy to look at and interact with. In fact, reviewers had a difficult time finding anything exceptionally negative to say, noting that this is the handset for anyone after a "well-rounded, do-it-all solution." It was also made clear that this phone and the iPhone were really two different animals not worth comparing (advantage, Tube), but that didn't stop critics from confessing that the 5800 packs an "unparalleled price / quality ratio that changes the rules for all phone makers out there, including Nokia itself."

  • i think that $350 is a fair price to pay for the Nokia 5800. It is a great touch screen phone, with an awesome music player. I think Nokia just take their time with N. America as they know it is owned by the iphone.

i've had my 5800 for almost three weeks now and still loving it. paid closer to $400 at samstores, and i guess its the euro version. but on t-mo there's no 3g anyhow. came over from the winmo world, but don't really miss the qwerty keyboard of my old eten glofiish, the on screen qwerty is quite good for a short sms or email response. for anything longer i use bt keyboard, which i haven't even tried with the 5800 yet. what i really miss is my "pocket informant" program which made contacts, calendar, etc. really useful. while sync'ing with outlook is fine, i need my outlook notes and the ability to group people and events into projects. i hope the developers catch up, or i'll have to find another way.
  • The real update for launch info is that the US 3G version of the NOKIA 5800 is looking more like as early as May and as late a June. And the US 3G only supports ATT's network NOT TMO's. And I saw a comment that someone is baffled why Nokia doesnt throw in another 3G radio to make it compatible with TMO. It is not that simple and takes about 3 months minimum for prototype to be built, testing, FCC approval, component sourcing, ramp up to build in the factory and other product management issues that all take time and money. So yeah, simple for Nokia since they do this all the time, but time consuming and resource restrictive coupled with the fact that question remains what is the Nokia return on investment for doing this. Anyone willing to bankroll the guarantee that Nokia will sell enough of these in the US to justify the costs to launch a TMO US 3G version. Plus, the fact is technology will soon be here to have a quad banded 3G and quad banded phone integrated into one so problem with ATT vs TMO 3G solved.

When you say distributor, are you referring to distribution to the Nokia Flagship stores or to providers like At&t stores?
  • a Distributor is who Retailers like Dell, Amazon, Tigerdirect, etc get their stock from.
  • Stephen
@Mark Guim, Thanks for clearing that up. Now I hope that At&t picks it up.
  • gustavok
Maybe too expensive. But i really would like to know when this beautiful thing is coming to brazil... better don't know the aswer.
  • Distributor meaning this - the unlocked Nokia 5800 US 3G version will be available at retailers and online sites like amazon.com, mobilecityonline.com, buy.com, newegg.com, tigerdirect.com, walmart.com then retailers like Nokia Flagship in NYC and Chicago, J&R Music in NYC, Just Mobile @ RCS Experience in NYC, Airport Wirless in most airports, Best Buy Mobile, many independent owned wireless phone dealers across the US, but NOT any carrier stores. Not everyone will have them at the same time so be sure to search and find them. Nokia Flagships will have them first, but no discounts so if you wait a few more days they will hit other places for cheaper. Good luck! And it is a very cool device, but not an iPhone killer. And to note, I am a Nokia E71 user for over a year and love it.
  • Al Pavangkanan
    $400 is the MSRP.

I'm sure it will sell for cheaper.
  • I've had my Nokia 5800 for more than a week now via a FREE upgrade from Vodafone here in the UK. So far, I am quite impressed with it. I have begun writing my 'review' of this device on my blog. Check my first (and only, so far) post on it: Nokia 5800 Xpress Music is cool
  • So here is the latest update and moved up LAUNCH for the US version of the Nokia 5800.....1st Week of MARCH 2009. Yes, that is only a couple weeks away. The launch program received priority to launch the first Nokia 'touch' device in the US recently and the race is on to make it happen. Also, stay tuned for the announcement of the NEW Nokia Eseries, the E75 - basically the E51 with a side slide out qwerty keyboard. Slim and small alternative to the E71. More details to come in the near future so stay tuned!

    UnlockMe,
Where is this update coming from?
  • UnlockMe
