Nokia Maps 3.0 Beta Updated – I Still Can’t Install It
Back in December, Nokia Beta Labs released Nokia Maps 3.0 Beta with better looking maps, 3D landmarks, and other features. However, I could not install it after several attempts. Today, they announced another update to the Maps 3.0 Beta, but again, I could not install it. The problem is with the installation steps.
According to Beta Labs, we need to install Nokia Maps Updater on the computer first. I think that’s where the problem is. Back in December, the Maps Updater couldn’t even find the connection between my Nokia N85 and computer. Now it finds my N85, but gets stuck at checking for software updates.

I would like to try the Maps 3.0 Beta. It would be a lot better if I can just download a (.sis) file and install it directly on my phone. Are you having problems installing the Beta too?

onizzy on 9 February 2009:
I cant install maps 3.0 to my n82 also. It now works on the n82, so i decided to give it a shot. I’m able to download it to my pc, and the installer starts on my phone, but during the process, say “cant install, component is built in”
Eduardo on 9 February 2009:
Hi Mark.
I was able to find the direct .sis file, for those of us with OS X or Linux computers, or just having installation issues. For FP1 devices, you can use this link: http://www.e71blog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/Nokia_Maps_3.0_0302_3.1_u.sis
For FP2 devices, you can download it here: http://www.e71blog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/Nokia_Maps_3.0_0302_3.2_u.sis
Mark Guim on 9 February 2009:
is this the download file from today or the same one from december? I tried the december .sis file and got error messages.
Micky on 9 February 2009:
I have successfully installed this new version on both N95 models, an N82, and now an N85.
Make sure you switch your firewall off, in case its this stopping your installation.
Eduardo on 9 February 2009:
@Mark Guim, these are from the release just today.
Also, make sure after you install that you go to your memory card and delete the ‘cities’ folder, as well as the .qf file in the root. Then reboot your phone and it should work fine.
Mark Guim on 9 February 2009:
@Eduardo, Thanks. Will try now and let you know the results soon.
Mark Guim on 9 February 2009:
@Eduardo, Installed and reboot. Ran it once and get Not enough memory to start the application. Erased the cities folder again then tried again. No luck.
skykid on 9 February 2009:
That Sis file did it for me.
Mark Guim on 9 February 2009:
@skykid, what phone?
skykid on 9 February 2009:
@Mark Guim
On E71 with updated firmware
Pablo on 9 February 2009:
Run as administrator.
I had the same problem but with nokia photos. The phone is not recognized if I don´t use the Run as administrator option (right click over the file).
Mark Guim on 9 February 2009:
Anyone with N85 that got it to work?

[...] The Nokia Blog – Maps 3.0 Beta Fail, cannot install on N85 [...]
Micky on 10 February 2009:
@Mark Guim, yes, as said above mate, installed fine on the N85 I have here. I installed it the conventional way, and not the sis file too.
Matt on 11 February 2009:
@Mark Guim,
If you’re still getting the “not enough memory” error after deleting both the .qf file and the cities folder, try deleting this file:
e:\private\20001f63
it contains all of the map data from the previous version of Maps. Then check if there is another copy of e:\cities before you try running Maps 3.0 again, and if there is delete it also. Same with the .qf file. Then go ahead and run Maps and it should work. I have an N95-1, not an N85 but i think it should still fix the problem…
Matt on 11 February 2009:
@Mark Guim,
I almost forgot (and you probably already know this), but to access that file your phone needs to be hacked to access system folders, or you can just attatch it in mass storage mode to your laptop and enable your computer to show hidden files.
Shani on 12 February 2009:
That sis file did it for my n95 8gb too. Thanks.
Jambo on 13 February 2009:
I have a Mac. Just installed this from the .sis file provided by Eduardo, no problems as of yet. Deleted the cities and qf files as instructed and rebooted the phone, maps seems to be running fine, but can’t check it properly as I’m inside and can’t use the GPS.
Thanks Eduardo!

@Matt,i have n96 and i am getting “not enough memory” even after deleting cities and .qf file. i looked in the memory card for e:\private…there is no such folder….is there anything specific that needs to be done on n96 for maps 3.0 to work?
Thanks
Ryan on 19 February 2009:
@onizzy,

Hanneman on 13 March 2009:
I cant install maps 3.0 to my n82 also.I’m able to download it to my pc, and the installer starts on my phone, but during the process, says “cant install, component is built in”
Any suggestions?
Stewart on 16 March 2009:
It seems that I’d installed the latest version of the “old” Maps v2.0 on my N96 (v12 firmware). So uninstalling it again (Menu -> Applications -> App. Mgr. -> Installed Apps. -> Nokia Maps -> Uninstall) allowed the installation of the new v3.0beta to Just Work
Andrew on 25 March 2009:
Yes I also had the same problem. When I try to install the map app it says my phone does not support SIS files or it says file to big.
Does any 1 know what 2 do??????
Craig on 4 April 2009:
Nokia E90 with the following firmware:
300.34.84
27-08-2008
RA-6
Nokia E90 (219.02)
Note: Used the .SIS file link above for my FP1 device.
1. Backup phone memory.
2. Renamed the CITIES folder on my memory card to CITIESforV2 and renamed the QF file (root of memory card) on the memory card to QFforV2. This is so that I can go back to Maps v2 if need be. Also don't have to download my maps again. I also have a 2 GB memory card which helps. Maps for South Africa are only about +30 MB.
3. Installed Maps version 3 from FP1 SIS file above.
NOTE: Forgot to remove Maps v2!
4. Restart phone. This IS important. This allows the phone to do housekeeping.
5. Start Maps – this will create the CITIES folder and the QF file on your memory card. It would appear that some of the settings are picked up from v2.
6. Used Nokia Map Loader 3 to download map data for South Africa to install on the phone. The application still does NOT check what maps are currently installed on the phone.
7. Start Maps again and away we go.
NOTe: Maps 3 does find your “favorites/places/landmarks” but has a different icon set to the Landmarks application. Landmarks will still have your choises, but Maps v3 has only white icons on a blue background.
Chamlika on 11 July 2009:
I get the same error message.. “componet is built in” while doing your step 3 to install the sis file.
FYI.. here are my phone firmware details,
v31.0.016
09-12-08
rm-313
Nokia N82(08.01)

as for my problem – couldn't install nokia maps 2.0 on my 6120 classic – it says “phone memory is full. delete some files from the memory”. i got rid of all the apps installed in the phone memory – in vain, the error persists…
