Video: Big Things To Come From Carl Zeiss and Nokia
February 25th, 2009 • Mark Guim • Filed Under •
Sony Ericsson announced a 12mp camera phone and Samsung blasted the doors open with an HD capable phone expected later this year. Nokia’s response at MWC was an 8MP cameraphone called the Nokia N86 which they claim to be the most advanced imaging device. If you feel that is inadequate, don’t worry. A video interview with Sales and Marketing Director at Carl Zeiss says there will be interesting things to come.

If you ask me, the dude looks defeated. I would be too especially if I was in his position and saw Sony and Samsung’s announcements. What do you think?

Megapixel wars suck. It’d be much better having Nokia equip their phones with a nice xeon flash and some nice lenses. My old 2003 2-megapixel Canon compact makes much better photos than my N95 8gb.

defeated? more megapixels and higher resolution on video recording, dosen’t mean a better camera, it might help but usally its more a consumist feature (i dont mean the camera of those devices will be a crap, neither im saying that the n86′s camera will be blowing) but the n86 has his own interesting spec, for example de wide-angle, the variable aperture, the mechanical shutter, and the speed of the shutter, this surely can make better exposured pics, the only downside is that every its automatic, if just they make them manual we could be watching a dslr-like camera phone
Micky on 26 February 2009:
There will always be those who argue more MP = better camera’s, but the fact of the matter is, Nokia is not in this race, and does not even entertain it, they are focused, pardon the pun, on producing better camera lens, software, and sensors, not playing the game others are playing.

Hi, this Dude as you call him looks not defeated, but very relaxed. And so he should be. Zeiss and Leitz (Leica) lenses are still the best in the world. Do I really want to print a grainy wallpaper (12 m pixels Sony etc.) or do I want to take a superior shot with a quality lens and quality sotware? I know the answer!

So you are one of those people that think megapixel numbers count. As morpheus said to neo “You think thats air youre breathing? Hm.”
A highly refined professional lense and dedicated software can make a 5 mpx cam great.
Mark Guim on 26 February 2009:
I can’t be the only one who was shocked by the HD video recording on the OmniaHD.
Paul on 27 February 2009:
If there are indeed big things to come, they better hurry the hell up. Nokia’s ridiculous sluggishness in bringing phones to market (in the US) is friggin’ annoying.
bazza on 28 February 2009:
@Mark Guim, oh the HD recording was great, but lets wait till that has had a few more months of use before we start poping the bubbly. Its samsung afterall and they make HD TVs, Cameras, Toilets…..they have the means.
