Nokia’s Response To The Nokia 5800 NAM Issue
I just got word from one of my contacts at Nokia about the issues surrounding the Nokia 5800 NAM and their reponse. It looks like they learned some devices are having problems concerning 3G performance, but it seems isolated to New York and Chicago. Please don’t kill the messenger, and read the response.

“We have learned that some Nokia 5800 XpressMusic devices are having issues with 3G performance. This is a very isolated problem concerning only the North American market* and is not specific to any other region or country. We are currently investigating the matter further to find a quick remedy to the situation. Customer satisfaction and product quality are very important to Nokia and we take all quality and customer satisfaction-related issues seriously. Nokia is investigating the issue. Existing customers of the 5800 XpressMusic who experience 3G signal issue with the device are advised to contact Nokia Customer Care.”
*only NY and Chicago affected, in Dallas and Miami the devices are working OK. The investigation is ongoing on the device itself and the network used in these cases.
I’m still confused how NY and Chicago are the only affected areas while Dallas and Miami are fine. The only logical reason I can think of is network issues. We’ll watch closely what Nokia decides to do next.

I wonder if one of the problems is the 850 mhz network in Chicago. I have an E51. It detects AT&T’s 850 mhz network in Chicago, but it’s pretty buggy and slow (though faster than EDGE). In general, AT&T’s network seems far inferior to Verizon.

@Tarun, are they give the phone for free? how about here in wichita, kansas?
EJC on 3 March 2009:
@tim, that may be true, but the way I see it, AT&T is a GSM carrier, a much more global network format than CDMA, which is what Verizon is (along with Sprint).

The plot thickens: Nokia investigating 5800 NAM issues, says problem is limited to Chicago and New York | Are you reading? on 3 March 2009:
[...] This whole 3G performance thing on the North American version of Nokia’s 5800 XpressMusic is shaping up to be one of the great made-for-TV gadget industry dramas of the year. First it didn’t work, then we found that it kinda did, and now Nokia has put out a totally cryptic statement that clarifies little about what’s going on (likely because they don’t know either, if we had to guess). In a nutshell, they’re acknowledging that “some” NAM 5800s are having issues, they’re investigating why, and owners are advised to contact Nokia Customer Care. Here’s where it gets crazy, though: they go on to say “only NY and Chicago affected, in Dallas and Miami the devices are working OK. The investigation is ongoing on the device itself and the network used in these cases.” It’s possible that there’s a very specific combination of equipment being used in these two markets that’s causing the 5800s to choke, but in all likelihood, it has more to do with the spectrum in use — in which case, the problem is probably far more widespread than just two cities. If this shakes out to be a hardware issue and Nokia’s gotta send ‘em back to the labs to get retooled for a few weeks or months, are they better off canning the model and moving on?Source [...]

I believe is AT&T fault, not nokias. If the phone can’t get 3G or the normal GSM, then is a faulty phone.

I just canceled my pre-order for the 5800 amid all the confusion. The 1st rep I spoke with reported that Chi and Ny inadvertantly recieved euro spec phones which, if true, could explain the 3g issues. Why some phones seemed to function ok is another story. To cancel I had to speak to a rep in their fulfillment center who said they have no inventory for pre-orders as of 1030am EST today. There you have it

Hi have a Nokia 5800 and it have given me so many issues in the last 1 month that not even all my phones together have given me in last 10 years.
Nokia 5800 –
Issue 1 : My screen went blank in just 30 days and the phone was rendered dead.
Issue 2 : Phone auto shuts down 2-3 times a day even after factory reset , so u will not relaise and the phone will just shut down.and it will not switch on till you removed the batter and then aain put the battery back.
Issue 3 : Connection Error the phone gives me connection error more then frequently , and just cuts the calls abruptly.
Issue 4 : Even when I hold the phone in Potrate mode the display is ain landscape mode.
Issue 5 : Need to charge the batter atleast 2 times a day.
And you know worst of all Nokia is not even ready to listen and does not have any avenues for me to complain. They are not even ready to replace my phone.
Worst is Nokia Careline .. I mean I have used all brands in the last 10 years and the pathetic leven of support that is provided by Nokia is really shocking… I seriously recommend never to buy a Nokia phone and dont even think of buying N5800.
Nokia does not have the skill and technology to build a touch phone and they have come out with just a fancy featured phone which does not work at all.
