Vlog: Nokia N85 After 3 Months – Build Quality Results

It’s been three months since I’ve had the Nokia N85, and while I had no complaints of the ‘wobble’ problems that some readers have mentioned, the build quality is not perfect. A crack at the bottom of the front facia appeared as well as scratches on the numeric keypad. Maybe my N85’s slider was too tight?

Below is a video showing the results. This is our first HD video taken with the Sanyo Xacti HD1010. Expect more HD videos to come!

Head over to the blog if the video is not visible in your RSS reader. What about the rest of Nokia N85 owners? Noticed anything similar?

the same thing happened to mine . another problem happened to my n85 that when i turn it on nothing works it stay stuck and the power button also doesn't work
  • Have the exact same experience. Am going to take my N85 back tomorrow to see how I go with it

Exactly the same problem with my n85. The front bottom panel was lifting up without proper glue. After 5 days I just got adhesive and carefully
    stuck it myself

Regarding the slider wobbling....it's terrible.. deep shit.

Performance was awesome except it hangs sometimes and the music player and the photo viewer has problems. I loaded some 800 pictures and as i am browing it, the pics fail to convert them to thumbnail properly and the images are blurred and the back button fails to respond.

Hope this can be resolved by a new firmware. Hope nokia takes care of it

I have NAM version of N85 and my phone got same crack at the botton of the front facia below the D-pad.

Will Nokia replace the front facia??

I bought a N85-1 from Ebay via Mark's tips on the Live Cashback and Ebay coupon. The thing had a slight wobble and after a month the front plate also cracked in the same place. The earpiece also died on me. Good thing I put a warranty on it through Square Trade so I was able to get my full money back (and I also got extra from the Live Cashback...cool!)

Then I bought a N85-3 NAM from Dell, again via Mark's tip. That N85 is very solid....no wobble at all. I've had it for 2 months now and no cracks or scratches have developed either. I really think they improved production on the NAM version. I am in love with my N85 again.
  • I've had my N85 since November and I have the same scratches on the keypad. No cracks though. My N85 is barely functional, so scratches are the least of my problems with it.
  • THAT WAS GREAT

hmm i saw an n85 where the silver multimedia key had come out, i can't imagine this would ever happen on my n96. Build is solid and still works after loads of drops and being covered in water twice, although the camera flash has stopped working
  • The build quality is not perfect at all. The Eseries are much better on build quality than all the Nseries, despite I own a N78 and for now it has no problems.
  • Mark,

Video looks good! When I switched to HD, it seemed like the colors got brighter. Keep 'em coming!

    @marat,

Great. But the article is about the N85.

Looks like you have the euro/asian version and those have had their fair share of defects with the cracking and falling off of the front face plate. I have the NAM version and only after a months use, is still solid even after one drop on the cement. I am crossing my fingers that mine does not develop the crack, soo don't want to deal with nokia's customer support (if its even covered).

@caliboy99, I have the NAM version as well. I'm on my 2nd N85 now. The first one got a crack on the front plate after 2 weeks. I was able to exchange it from Dell. Almost a month now, and everything's perfect so far.
