Top 50 Widgets for Nokia N97 Competition Posted – I’m In!

Thanks to our readers for letting me know that my widget design submission made it to the top 50 entries on the Nokia N97 Widget Competition. They will announce the top 10 entries on Friday, March 13th, so please help me win a Nokia N97 by voting for my widget, Ping Status!

Ping Status

My widget design basically uses the Ping.fm service by letting me update all my social media sites like Jaiku, Facebook and Twitter with one click. Tapping on the title would ideally show options that will let me choose the specific site I want to update (for example: update Twitter, but not Facebook).

Voting for the widget is not very straightforward though. Ricky Cadden explained the user voting experience accurately:

*Note* To actually submit your vote, you must click the ‘This is my favorite’ link beside the widget, then scroll ALL the way to the bottom of the page, and click the ‘Submit my Vote’ button. There is also a CAPTCHA, so don’t forget to scroll to the bottom again to make sure that you’ve successfully submitted your vote.

Please help me win the contest and the Nokia N97 by voting! We’ll find out on Friday the results.

  1. Thanks for the link, Mark. I was rather annoyed to see how confusing it is to vote, really. There’s nothing that prompts you to scroll to find the ‘Save my vote’ (or whatever it says) button, you just kind of have to find it. The same thing with the captcha. I wonder how many votes are lost because of that?

  2. It is true that the process of voting is rather tricky… However, I found the selection of Widgets for the top 50 even poorer…

I personally think that there are too many widgets that just show information, but don’t allow “interaction”. On the other hand, some of the widgets that allow interaction are not finger-friendly at all.

In the end the widget space on the homescreen will be pretty “valuable”, as there is only room for 6. Though the selection will always be very personal, what characteristics make for a good widget?

    Mark, I personally like yours.

  3. I always read your great news.Anyway thanks.

  4. Good luck with the widget .. :)

  5. I’m in too, which is weird because mine blew.
