5 Nokia Phones I Want to See

Over at HOFO, Pink Jazz posed the question: What would be your own ideal S60 phone? I was halfway through making a reply when a bunch of thoughts popped into my head. So I came up with ideas for 5 phones I’d like to see.

Nokia N97 8MP

La estrella del Nokia World 2008 en Barcelona - Share on OviWhile the Nokia N97’s camera is impressive compared to its mainstream competitors like the G1, Pre and iPhone, it is pretty lacking compared to niche flagships like the Sony Ericsson C905 or the Samsung Omnia HD. As someone who loves to create media with his mobile, I felt underwhelmed by the N97’s camera when it was announced.

My first phone would give the same treatment to the Nokia N97 the N85 got from the N86 8MP. I would upgrade the N97 with the N86 8 megapixel camera, the 720P video capture from the Omnia HD and the xenon flash from the N82. Those are options I’d expect from an N-Series flagship. An OLED screen would be great to view all that created content.

Nokia E70 Modernized

14.11.2008 - Share on OviThe split qwerty flip form factor was one of Nokia’s best and fun innovations. Unfortunately for the E70, its CPU and available RAM were woefully inadequate. My idea would be to take the E70 and put the E55 guts into it: a fast 600 mhz processor, lots of ram and a beefy 1500 mah battery. A 5MP camera with flash wouldn’t hurt either. A 320×480 HVGA screen like Nokia 6260 Slide would be the cherry on top.

Nokia E90 Baby

20090106_kt615_2 - Share on OviIn my travels around Los Angeles, I see that messaging phones are getting more and more popular amongst teens. I see a lot of phones flip qwerty phones that are small versions of Nokia Communicators like the Nokia E90 and 9300. LG already makes an S60 phone (the KT615) with this form factor, but it is pretty much only sold in sporadic places in eastern Europe. All it needs is quadband GSM and triband 3G and it could sell worldwide. Throw in S60v3 Feature Pack 2, micro-USB and a 3.5mm headphone jack for a little more flavor.

Nokia N90 Reloaded

Nokia N90 - Share on OviI absolutely loved my Nokia N90. I think its best feature was the sheer size of it when opened. It was always a topic of discussion whenever people saw me use it. I’ve been thinking about a new version for a long time, so I have complied a lot of ideas that could be in this phone.

I’d keep the barrel flip form factor of the N90 instead of the swivel flip form of the N93. The barrel would house a 5MP camera with optical zoom and dual LED flash. No room for xenon, since this would be a video focused device with 720P video capture. The outer screen would be a 2.0″ QVGA screen with music controls like the N76. Turning the barrel would activate camera mode. The inner screen would have a 3″ 640×360 touch screen and could flip all the way to the other side. Turning the barrel in this mode would activate video capture. In camcorder mode, you could manually select video or camera mode. In addition to 720P and VGA video capture, I’d also add a 120 fps mode for slow motion.

Flip open the phone and you have a standard d-pad, control cluster and number pad. The left side would have a lock switch, memory card slot and power button. The right side would have a tiny joystick for volume and camera controls. The bottom would have a headphone jack, micro-USB port and a mini-HDMI port for hooking up to an HDTV. Of course, vibration would not be missing and a bigger battery would be added.

Would it be too massive to have all those features?

Nokia 3220 Remix

I used a 3220 while on a vacation back in 2006 since my N90 was locked to T-Mobile. The 3220 was a crazy little phone that had lights go off in sync with its ring tones. I wouldn’t make many changes. A 4×3 screen ratio, bigger battery, nicer camera and stereo speakers would bring it up to date. The big change would to have a lot more lights and synced ring tones for more fun.

Your Ideas

These are my ideas… what would be your own ideal Nokia phone?

    Hey all :)

Just an idea for a phone concept witch in all fairness, I think it would prove to be viable and practical not to mention a good seller......

A phone with compact scales digitally displayed say from Gram too 2 Oz !
I choose to blog this idea on a Nokia site, for Nokia has a tendency too listen to the consumer needs.

"Why with scales"? well I happen to know a few gold dealers and a couple of hemp dealers , who just hate having there collars felt for carrying scales as you can see there clearly is a market... ;)

I'd like to see the N93 revamped with a big but thin design and improved camera function. If it had a 4 or 4.5 inch screen, it would make it the ideal size for viewing video and web content as well as a great monitor for filming.

I think at the least the camera should be improved to the specs of the Samsung Omnia HD (8MP, 720P video recording).

The thinking used to be that there was a music phone in the N Series (91) video (93) etc. I'd like a device that is completely dedicated and designed to being a video camera with phone capabilities.
  • I don't think it would be too clunky. I would like to see an interface for running travel-drive ready PC apps, voice recorder, standard speech to text app, saved to .txt file with export feature.

The n79 with better camera optics and metal body, a slighty bigger screen! Amoled ofcourse! Music comtrols along one side, thinner, and 16gb built in memory!
That sounds doable and I hope something close to that comes out sooner or later!

As an owner of the E70 and 3220 ( which is still my active backup ). I would love to see a refreshed E70, I loved that phone and still do, the only reason i don't use it anymore is because nokia abandoned it both with firmware and software the constant out of memory errors moved me up to a N82 but i miss the E70 every time i'm going to type an email or something. the stupid slider keyboards and such just aren't as nice as the one on the e70.

    the banana phone!
  • I've got a Nokia N93 and while optical zoom is cool, the mechanical noise impinges on videos. Moreover, the smaller image sensor means the low-light capabilities are pretty crappy. I'm happy with my N93, but those are some pretty serious limitations. My ideal cameraphone is one with a smaller MP count, but a larger image sensor. If they could get the sensor from a full point-and-shoot camera wedged in there, that would be truly drool worthy.

And if we're talking about fantasies, how about wired/bluetooth accessories. Like a mic that can be used to record from another point. How about a tripod mount? Or a detachable screen that can be held away from the actual recording part of the phone. Hell, maybe even attachable zoom lenses.

Ooh ooh, and touch screen camera controls, to manage focal points and white balance.
  • 1. N83 << Combination of n81 gaming keys + the n82 superb camera..3rd GEN DLED flash + 8mp carl zeiss + 3" OLED screen + 32gb internal + 3D accel + numeric keypad good readable for landscape

    2. N97 << 8MP + 3rd GenDled Flash

    3. N91 <<8mp + 3rd GenDled flash+ new music era innovations (new special keys like 7205) + 2.8" OLED screen + QweRty

    4. E90 << QWERTY + 8mp cam + 3rd gen dled + special buttons just like for Nseries multimedia keys + 3" OLED touch screen

    5. 8000 XPRESS music <<< 8mp+ 3rd gen dled flash + 3" OLED touch screen + X button for music and gaming + 16gb

these can be all concepts but its a great possibility that most of them someday will become reality..a truth is good but sometimes its an inconvenient truth
  • I definitely do _NOT_ want to see an 8 MP Nokia N97: 8 megapixels just mean larger file sizes and worse image quality than using a good 5 MP sensor, see http://www.6mpixel.org/. (And this is for compact cameras, sensors in these phones are even smaller...) Better video capture yes, maybe a better lens or more features for the camera, but 8 MP: No, thanks.

A nokia 5800 with a capacitive screen, multitouch and the 600mhz cpu please....

My grey steel E66 with a better camera and better battery. I wouldn't use a qwerty that often ( my laptop is a much better choice for typing) and I am not really fond of a touchscreen. I think the E66 is the classiest of them all!
