Review: Gravity – Twitter App For S60

Mobileways released Gravity on Monday and I’ve been using it on the Nokia 5800. One of the most common questions I find on Twitter from people who mention Nokia, is what app to use for Twitter? Look no further because here it is. Gravity is an app you can download and install on your phone, however there are mobile sites accessible through the browser like Dabr that offer the same features. What’s the difference? Gravity looks pretty.

Note: Head to the blog if the embedded video below is not visible in your RSS reader.

Features

One thing I noticed immediately on Gravity is the scrolling. Mobileways need to give Nokia some lessons how to implement this throughout the phone because it works great! You can go down the list slowly or flick to go faster.

You can view your friends’ tweets, replies, direct messages, and favourites, follow, unfollow. All these features are also auto-updated, so no need for a refresh button.

Another useful section includes the multiple Search tabs. You can choose to follow certain keywords on Twitter.

Gravity also lets you send existing photos from the phone to TwitPic, but I recommend doing that with Shozu’s one-click instead. Nevertheless, it’s good to have that option.

The Good

A lot of people are looking for a good Twitter App and I think this is the answer. The interface looks great and it includes most if not all the features available found on a desktop app for Twitter.

The Bad

Gravity closes randomly at many times. It’s really quick to re-open the application, but it gets annoying after a while.

Leaving this application on for too long will drain your battery fast. My Nokia 5800’s battery was full in the morning, but gave me a low battery warning by 2PM. I usually see the warning at night after my typical usage.

Yay or Nay?

Let us know how Gravity is doing on your Nokia phone. Do you like it?

  • You may also try the free @SociallyApp (http://bit.ly/6mFra0) on 5800 and other Nokia phones. It supports Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn and integrates with the phone book by showing the profile photos and latest status of the callers during incoming calls. • Does anyone know how to install this on a N81? I have tried to do it the whole day, it keeps saying "Certificate not signed", and then tried download Freesigner to self-sign it, but all the Freesigner apps that I downloaded certificates' expired.

    Anybody have any advice?

    Gravity absolutely rocks!

One of the best apps I've seen on the 5800. The version I'm using doesn't have any problems with crashing/quiting but yes it can drain battery life if the leave the app online and polling twitter.

I've had my 5800 4 months and this is the first app I've found that I'm willing to pay for, well worth the money.

does anyone know how to create a new tweet on gravity???
  • Just start to type with your phone's keypad.
  • I've been using Gravity since I got my Nokie E71 about a month ago, and absolutely love it. It's easy to use, has a great interface, and has all the features I could want - @ replies, tweets, searching, etc. Prior to that I had been using Twibble on an N76. Twibble is nice, but nothing like Gravity.

I have been using Gravity for the past 10days on the free trial run. Just about to buy the app becouse it was so good. Twitpic, mobypicture Yfog etc all there for you...it even shows ur recent picures you have taken for easy peasy upload!

As much as I Iike Dabr its not as silky and smooth as Gravity and has been having a lot of trouble this past week with Twitter not allowing updates so the whole system was down for days. Snaptu's got a lot of tweaking to do as its thin on the ground. £5.80 for Gravity? Its well worth it.

Have been using gravity on the trial version on my 5800 and am very pleased. Its almost like using tweetdeck or a similar app.
    Highly recommended by me :)
  • I use snaptu for both Twitter and Facebook. Its free and has all the features - including twitpics, retweet, delete, open urls and so on

    did i say its free? :-0 http://www.snaptu.com
  • I've been using Gravity on my N73, and it's the app I've been waiting for. Perhaps the best program for S60, by far the best interface I've seen since Mobizenes. The scrolling is the best I've seen, it's fast, it's functional, and it's a dream to use.

One of my favorite features is the context searching. The program recognizes @replies and #tags and does a search so I can understand the context of messages. That right there is something that you don't see even in most desktop Twitter apps.

However, it's not without flaws. For $10, I'd hope for Ping.FM support, but at least it does Identi.ca at no cost (that means mobile TWiT Army). The TwitPic support is pretty good (though it doesn't seem to see pictures that aren't in the photo directory, or PNGs, so screenshots aren't so hot).

I'd like it a bit more if it automatically connected to the network, and it seems to 403 (Forbidden) a lot recently, but that might just be its way of handling Fail Whales. There is no manual, but MobiWays support is top notch. Here's hoping for a lot of really good upgrades (which they promise is coming).

how is it that you guys cannot tweet???
I have an N82 and I simply start typing. It works but then I do not know how is it working on touchscreen???
  • elMarko
Okay, I get it. Just start typing (so long as you're online and on the correct screen, in Gravity). Now, say I wanted to append a TwitPic to this. . . Sheesh, where's the manual? Honestly, I don't need a manual, with Twibble. I'm trying to give Gravity a fair shake, but it ain't easy.
  • Just go to the "Accounts" tab, then scroll down a bit and look for "Images". Click on any of the image and start uploading. It supports Twitgoo too, my favorite when it comes to Twitter image uploading.

Well, I didn't have a manual too but it's really not that difficult to get used to things. It's a neat piece of app, but $10 is too expensive nevertheless.

It's just an app for a phone after all.
  • TheRam
I had given up on it because I could not tweet, who would have though to just type!

This is not an iPhone, things should not be easy!

it's nice...but like some have said..its not free....the latest version of fring now has a twitter add-on. It's not as pretty, but since Fring is free...gets the job done.
  • elMarko
Dang. I don't get it. On my Nokia E71, Gravity is only a tweet-reader. I mean, I like that I can re-tweet, but I cannot figure out how to create a new tweet.

. . . and I used to think I wasn't to much of an idiot.
  • I don't have the nokia e71 anymore but i think you just start typing for new tweet
  • Name
yep just type to add new tweet!
  • frontieruk
Left Gravity on for 12 hours connected today still had a quarter of my E71 battery left, so I'm not sure it's that big a drain. It is a nice client tho'
  • I say nay: It isn't free, there is no point for it to kill your battery life when you're not reading tweets, it doesn't offer anything that Dabr doesn't do already.

It's pretty, but that's about it.
  • Gravity works great on my phone, the Nokia E71. In fact, after seeing the video of it working on the 5800, I think it is even nicer on my E71. For instance, to send an update, I just start writing... how simple is that.

As to battery life, I couldn't say as I don't leave Gravity running all the time. When I want to check twitter I simply go online... it takes a whole 5 seconds for it to go on-line so that works for me.
