Palm’s Eos Almost Super Thin – Nokia E71 Still The Thinnest Smartphone

The big rumor going around right now is about a super thin Palm Eos phone expected later this year with Qwerty keypad, touchscreen, and the new Palm OS. The measurements are supposedly 10.6 x 55 x 111 mm compared to 10 x 57 x 114. I’m being petty here, but that still makes the Nokia E71 the thinnest Smartphone in the world!

I’ve had the Nokia E71 for a while, and it is really thin. Take out the battery, and you’d be amazed how Nokia fit everything else in the phone.

We still don’t know what Nokia will come out with around the same timeframe of the Eos’ availability, but I hope it blows our minds… and stay thin.

Apparently the E71 gets water damaged very easily. For example, if you pick it up with wet hands you can do irrepairable damage. There is a dot inside the case that indicates water damage but even if that is perfectly normal, the phone can still be irrepairable and classified as water damaged. In fact even if it hasn't been near water, it can still be written off as water damaged.

@Sarm- Well, they're not too silent about it-

    You're correct on the 9.9mm. :-)

Anyway- not only is the Eos a bit thicker than the E71, it looks horrible! The E71 is a remarkably well crafted device and aesthetically, the best Nokia I've ever used.

@Deb Adams- Yes indeed, it's a poor idea to pick up any phone with wet hands- no great revelation here. You really shouldn't be surprised to find that if you work a couple drops of water into the keyboard of your smartphone as you pound away on a text, you're likely to damage the thing- in fact you'll find that this logic may be applied to many electronic devices. As Mark said, the innards of the E71 don't occupy much real estate after the battery is removed. There's some pretty important stuff *right* behind that keypad that don't appropriately (in your mind, apparently) appreciate the magical conductive powers of water. I'm curious to know what you had expected to occur when you grabbed your E71 with your soaking mitts? Honestly, you do understand how water and electricity work, yeah? :-/

At any rate- despite the inability for common sense to dictate appropriate operation of a rather sophisticated 300 dollar smartphone, bit off topic, innit?

Eh, maybe I'm just having a bad day...

In case you haven't noticed... It is much easier for Nokia to add a bit of weather-proofing to a cel-phone, which is obviously, going to be used out of doors, than it is for you and me to stop the rain... I bought additional insurance to cover such acts of God but, because the little dot turned Pink, even that insurance was voided... It's a great SCAM on the part of Nokia and their vendors... My issues are headed to court, as I have the "RIGHT" to expect that my cel-phone, costing over $300.00 should have at least some tolerance to the weather AKA moisture...
  • I've stayed on a N85 while running on the treadmill for over 30mins and sweat pouring down onto its display and guess what.. nothing! despite the fact that the N85 has the very same Inner Speaker that originated on the 5800 which is pron to moisture..

Forget that, i wipe all my cells N95 8GB, N73, N78 and N85 with wet tissues for no reason.. nothing happens..

Yes i live on the edge.. calling while running and applying water to Cell phones..
  • did you wet your E71?

I believe the E55 will be 9.9 mm. Nokia has been really silent about this handset. Some other up coming Toshiba handset is suppose to be 9 mm thick.
