Vlog: Nokia N97 First Impressions in HD

I just received a white Nokia N97 for testing from Nokia earlier today and quickly made a video to show you my first impressions. For the past few months, I’ve been able to play with the prototype here and there, but this is the final production version we’ve all been waiting for. Check it out.

You can also watch this video in HD from the Youtube page.

A full review is coming soon after spending more time with the Nokia N97. Here is a brief overview of the video:

  • The Nokia N97′ UI is responsive.
  • Widgets are very useful and I like the one for Facebook!
  • The keyboard will feel weird at first, but it’s not bad.
  • Web browser needs to load the page before you can scroll, very noticeable on larger sites.
  • The Nokia N97 has a good camera button, better than Nokia N96, 5800, N85, N82, and comparable to the Nokia N95 8GB.

For Nokia N97 live image samples, follow me on Twitter or check my Flickr as I upload them directly from the phone. I’ll have a Nokia N97 camera review coming up soon.

  • thnx for your review and nokia n97 is nice phone from internet purpose
  • Nice phone in appearance but is it a contender for the iphone 3gs? or perhaps even the htc touch hd which i would recommend. I suppose upgrading from previous Nokia would seem like a treat but is it competative enough with the other smart phones currently on the market and does it offer andthing new or groundbreaking?

    Hey Mark,
Got one question about the N97. Can you create albums or playlists of video clips? This was possible in N95, and I feel this is a pretty useful feature when you have lots of video clips stored in your phone.

    Thanks,
    Deb

Can you please give a real-world use with software loaded when you do your review? Here is a list of apps I run on my E71 SIMULTANEOUSLY:

    Fring
    Latitude (formerly Google Maps)
    Profimail
    Google App (recently released)
    Youtube
    Shozu/PixelPipe
    ActionGPS
    Mail For Exchange
    Web browser
    Opera/Skyfire
    CorePlayer
    Music player/ FM Radio
    Gmail App

Given the $700 pricetag on this phone - can I at least run all those apps throughout the day without crashing or S60 force-closing any of them?

I am sure many of these apps are very important for a lot of folks out there in some combination or the other.

    Thanks!

this thing looks like an N95 to me with a bigger screen and a full qwerty keyboard...usual Nokia stuff, no real improvement over the previous model. You get this device and straight away think....uhm...the os looks and feels like my N95...why did I spend $600 for it?...., Palm Pré looks more innovative and elegant as a device.

For the hardware...Nokia has yet to wake up and realize they've missed the software boat...In fact, given another year and a few more (shitty) models - Nokia will become irrelevant in the top-domain of smart phone markets.

A good example is the E72: Everything the E72 does should have been brought over to the E71 through a firmware update (except the 5MP camera of course). But knowing Nokia, a firmware update across all regions will take another year alone - so better just release a new handset I guess. Jokes apart, Nokia will not do it - this is their business model and users are becoming wise to it.

If you read all the N97 reviewers including this one - they are just sucking Nokia dick. No one has the balls to be critical or come out with what a device will really give in value. Every device looks exciting and great in the first few days on unboxing - it's whether you would go out and buy it again 2 weeks later is what counts. None of the reviewers online even give a list of software the are running before they 'assess' the phone as 'snappy'.
