Nokia N97 Photos with Fast Exposure

We’ve made it a habit to wake up early Saturday mornings to play basketball and I’ve been using the Nokia N97 to take photos. I just found out now that the N97 can take photos at 1/1000th of a second. This is great for freezing actions. Take a look at some of the samples.

Heads up #n97

Here’s the same photo on 100% crop. I can’t see a motion blur. The ball looks frozen in the sky!

Nokia n97 Frozen

Here’s another sample from the Nokia N97.

Saturday morning basketball #n97

…and the same photo at 100% crop. My buddies are obviously moving, but the Nokia N97 froze them in the photo without blur on their legs, arms, or the ball!

No Blur Nokia n97

I’m pretty impressed with the Nokia N97’s camera so far. I didn’t even realize the fast exposure until I was asked if the photos were taken in sport mode. They were taken in auto mode without tinkering any settings.

To find out the exposure properties on your photos, it is displayed in “more properties” on Flickr or within the Exif data of the photo.

  • baumi
mark, how do you set up the n97? sports mode or manual settings?
  • baumi
mark, which settings do you use to get these results? the sports mode or manual settings?
  • Mark, take a photo of a fan moving at high speeds or some birds flying so people can see what 1/1000 is really like. The pics you took were good, but they weren't super-action-pics that 1/1000 can freeze
  • I checked the exposure times on some photos I took on my N78. It seems that prior phones have been capable of doing these fast exposure times as well (set at auto as well). For close up shots, I see slow times of 1/15s or 1/24s. For distance shots I see 1/1000s. I even see exposure times of 1/1000000s on distance shots in the EXIF data as well.
  • Cool! Can I see the photo with the 1/1000000 exposure?
  • Check my twitter page for the images. Don't know if the EXIF data is correct or not. There are several images I took that seem to have this exposure time.
  • That's pretty impressive. I wonder what other tests you could do with the N97's camera to compare it to normal cameras.
