Nokia N97 Camera Flash Useless After 45 Days

After a month of using the Nokia N97, minor scratches appeared on camera lens which didn’t really affect photo quality. This past weekend (approx. 45 days of usage), I notice photos that used flash were washed out on one side. It looks like more scratches appeared on the lens that are now affecting the photos.

I wipe the lens as I previously suggested, but it no longer fixes the problem. Here are sample photos from over the weekend.

I have had my N97 for less than a month and now when I take photograph (with the flash on) I have lose half may photograph to what appears to be a light similar to what i've seen on this blog but only worse, Never had this problem with the N95. I would suggest this is a design flaw which needs addressing. Anyone have any ideas who I should contact?

N97 Camera is the worst camera in a handset i have ever seen, every shot it takes has a yellowish tint in it, i think it happens because of the dual flash located very near to the lens. The yellowish tint in the shots usually comes at the border that ultimately spoils the whole shot.
    N97 's camera is just pathetic.. :O

    Hey you guys
Do not worry, try this and report back.Tonight i was experencing the mist on the left hand side of my pictures.I was told over at a forum to move my fingers to a different position and try again.

The picture appears to be clear, its the lights reflection off the fingers i think.Maybe i am wrong and there really is a problem with some handsets just give it ago.
  • oh my...sorry Mark for ur n97 prob..i hope nokia will do things on these probs

i am having the same problem also videos at night time with the flash on is a big joke. i never had this issue with my nokia n95 8gb...it's sad really. i think its because of where the flash is on the camera. but i did try turning the phone upside down so the flash is in a dif position.
  • Are you applying too much force on the cover when you open it. I don't have such problem. Though I do it very gently every time.
  • Which is really annoying with this mobile is that we discover every day a new problem.
i have a white N97 and in order to make it work I had to remova all the active widgets from homesecreen, I also discovered that the camera slider makes some scratches on the lens.
Finally I also noticed that the pad on the keyboard starts getting yellow !
For a 700€ phone it's a shame, I am thinking about changing for an Iphone even if I am a Nokia fan.

I was a big fan of Blackberry at one time and lived by it, i always got the latest one and was always happy, i finally started looking towards other phones specially since having att since i was open to use far more and when i read about the n97 i was so stoked and how for over the years nokia has lead the industry and had awesome features like flash on web and amazing cameras...i really wanted to love this phone and gave it such a chance, but with my friends rocking things like android devices, one getting his hands on the touch pro 2 and a handfull iphone 3gs users...my n97 just wasnt hanging in the sense of "up to date" like the UI, Support, Words on the web, easy to use things like zooming in on web and openig pages, i dont wanna take extra steps just for it to do what others do well in one step...damn i wanted to love it but i sold it this morning...going 3GS.
  • this is a huge issue with 1000's on handsets being returned for repair !

Personally mine is ok - but when it does affect the pictures i'll have a moan to Vodafone..

What a bummer. I also have an N97 and had to return my first one due to the phone having various issues. One of those was the GPS not working right. Anyways this makes me nervous since one of the big reasons I bought this phone was for the camera. Is this something that they will fix under warranty? This is an expensive phone to have problems like this.
  • ben1010
yup, mine started doing this a few weeks ago too... i noticed it's caused by the flash, so a picture in the daylight turns out ok, but in the dark, I get a white haze over the left side of my photos.
  • sloanb
This is exactly what mine is doing. I had no idea this is what the cause was. This is horrible news to us N97 owners. Sadly I feel that the price of this phone simply isn't worth it. You sending yours in for repairs?
  • mikejay
had my n97 less than a month gps has more or less packed up lens has not scratched yet but i get the same white haze on all pictures that the flash has been used on i also spotted my mates 5800 has the same problem his pictures using flash are all washed out on one side next to the flash so this was an issue before the n97 came out.
