Nokia N97 Firmware Update 2.1 Coming Soon – What Would You Like To See?
December 27th, 2009 • Mark Guim • Filed Under •
Eldar Murtazin shared on Twitter last Friday that firmware update v2.1 is coming out soon for the Nokia N97. He has been quoted by Engadget as an “ultimate insider when it come to all things mobile,” so I’d probably listen to what he has to say. Whether you believe him or not, I’d like to ask what would you like to see on the update?

The last update, v2.0, was released on October featuring usability enhancements such as kinetic scrolling and long-press for symbols. It also freed up internal memory and provided stability improvements. There’s no changelog available for this supposed Nokia N97 v2.1 firmware yet, but let us know in the comments what you want to see.

David Alvarez on 27 December 2009:
- performance improvements(faster screens and more smoothly change of applications)
- web browser capable of opening flash contents
- more available widgets-
- get rid of the problem when a phone call is received and then you just cant hang up, need to take the battery out.
- better battery management, phone dies out in 2 days with average to minimum use of internet and other applications.

Give the update for us 5800 users too! HOW LONG do we have to wait nokia? if you're not giving us the update, just say it so that we can move on. but don't be silent!
Breathless Tao on 28 December 2009:
Why does it matter what we'd like to see? Again it's an update that's already getting far more attention than it deserves, bigger smoke than flame really, and it's out of proportions. Nokia just won't listen to us anyways, or it does but won't give a flyin' flick about what should be done to this epic fail called the N97, like a complete overhaul to the UI, among other things.
And whatever happens, it won't solve the core of the problem: the seriously inadequate hardware.
AC on 28 December 2009:
Speaking as an ex N97 owner myself and having gladly moved on to Maemo I can honestly say that I could not care less.
Doesn't matter what they do with the software if there is no power under the hood.

Add more homescreens!!!
thewinchesterau on 28 December 2009:
Sadly, I have to agree with you here. The N97 – given its status as a flagship handset for the company – has been a catastrophic failure from the start.
There would have to be some serious improvements delivered in this firmware point release for me to reverse my position that its the last Nokia I'll ever buy.
What I'd like to see:
* Further improvements to operating speeds
* Increased reduction and optimisation of OS footprint
* Removing a truckload of issues previously expressed regarding configuration limitations and complexity
* and a whole ton of others I can't think of right now.
Optional on 28 December 2009:
Portrait QWERTY
SWYPE integrated
Responsive kinetic scrolling like in Photos apps everywhere
More free RAM
GPS issues–or this is H/W issues
hridheek on 28 December 2009:
i want the following defects to be rectified….
1. sometimes after general use i notice that the battery heats up and drains very quickly even though there are no apps running in the background…
2.i have gps reception issues ..i stand at the open area for 10 min and still no fix and this is not my first time so it should detect quickly. And before the v2.0 update it used to show the sateliitle strength in the gps data in the location application but now there is no representation at all.
3.The widgets are not completely stable. Even though there is a constant secure connection it keeps breaking off such as signing out or connection lost.
4.while using messaging app it repeatedly shows the attention message stating that “Messaging :already in use”
5.the photo browser application is still awful…it takes long time to zoom a picture and then it goes to the homescreen during the process.and opening the captured folder takes so long just to show the thumbnails…
6.and suddenly i get an indication stating that the sim memory is full stopping new messages from entering.this is not the sim problem but the phone as i tried it with 3 different sims from from different operators.
7.the list goes on about minor software issues and i keep forgetting the problems i encounter so thats all i have to say for now.
8.finally this is not a software but hardware issue…the lens is scratched by its own cover and the flash works awful due to it..i have never seen such a bad design go unchecked and into the customers hands…i expected more quality from nokia as Finland is suppossed to be the one of the least corrupted countries in the world.and giving just 78 mb as internal?? COME ON…we pay 540$ or 32000 INR for it and get only this while others offer more for lesser price…see the n900 counterpart with virtual memory also …
ill post more issues in case i remember…

Amongst many, the one that really irks me from v20 is that the Music Player is now unusable because Nokia decided that the back button on the Playing Now screen should “exit” the app instead of going back to the previous screen (i.e. playlist song selection) I hope they restore the original functionality. Or better yet, show a playlist window on the now playing screen.
bheetebrij on 28 December 2009:
Integrated skype would be a major plus.
N97 frm Australia on 28 December 2009:
more phone memory space, and hopefully more language. I travel to Taiwan last week and feel sad that my N97 cant read Chinese, it makes me couldnt connect to the wifi.
hridheek on 28 December 2009:
oh ya and the music player back button goes to the home screen and not the playlist or songs menu you were previously in…which is really irritating
brianmilligan on 28 December 2009:
I would like to see the following:
Photo browser needs to be quicker together with some better tools to modify images quickly
Calling and sending text from the Contacts should be done with less clicks.
Much tighter integration between Ovi maps and contacts by encorporating coordinates into contacts.
Solve the random Nokia tune bug. For me this is one of the most annoying things about this phone and still hasn't been resolved with V2.0.
It's a shame the phone's core config can not be changed to create a some sort of paging file on the mass memory to improve the lack of RAM. Overall the perfromance of the phone has been disappointing because the lack of RAM.
Improve the Music Include an iTunes-like album browser to page through albums stored on the phone.
Fix the AccuWeather app. Since V2.0 my version has not worked. Not critical but very annoying.
Kinetic scrolling is very jumpy giving it a very clunky experience.
Consistency between one/two touch on the icons and further into the app menus. Sometimes you touch once to activiate an app and other times you have to touch twice.
A better task manager. I had to buy BestTaskman to view the RAM used and close applications that was draining the RAM.
There appears to be serious memory leaks. After closing certain apps like Gravity some of the memory is not returned when the app is closed. Over time this gradually eats into the RAM and a reboot is the only way to restore the RAM to full.
I agree Skype integration would be good. Yes there are work arounds but it should an integral part of the OS. Other SmartPhones already do this.
I'm sure there are more but that's all I can think of right now.
Jaja Binks on 28 December 2009:
Can they fix or better yet develop a mechanism for transferring album art for all songs synced to your phone. Currently it only does about 5% of the songs on my phone and for whatever reason it doesn't get the album art for all the songs.
Gustavo Lozano on 28 December 2009:
Well, probably v2.1 will just fix the bugs present in v2.0, and will be submitted as a replacement for the ones running v2.0 already. If you check, v2.0 was PULLED some weeks ago (late october for some product codes, early nov for others, and dec for the final ones)….
I have 2 N97 NAMs, one of it is running v2.0 and is full of bugs, the other one is running v1.2 and it works more or less ok, and right now updating to v2.0 on the second is not possible cause Nokia pulled it from NSU.
Vikas on 29 December 2009:
Can you tell when you purchased the n97 as newer production units are supposed to be free of the lens scratch problem.I would recommend you take it to nokia care centre and get the lens and gps issue fixed(free under warranty).

Nice, not a bad looking phone! I guess bronze and black is the new fad for the niche.
Why is Nokia bothering with this phone still, just bring out the N900 and release that in a limited edition.

Most of what i want to see has already been said in the earlier comments.
But the top things in my wish list is:
1. Better stability.
2. Better handling of calls. the accelerometer should be deactivated when a call is in progress.
Its coming out anytime now. Hope everyones happy with the new firmware.
Happy holidays to you too!
hridheek on 29 December 2009:
deactivate acclerometer when call is performed

Hello,
1,The Display light timeout must be increased.
2. There is no option to mark the msgs while selecting them, you have to go in options and then mark or mark all option is only available, no select tool is there.
3. Key pad must not be locked automatically while display light is timed out. When the auto key lock option is also turned off.
4. If we open key lock from the side scroll button than why we have to slide the unlock on the screen too, its a double job.
5. It looses network at most of the places… indoor coverage is weak in compare to other mobiles.
6. There must be a scroll key option on the screen, as it moves very fast, and you can not select or concentrate on the data moving fast.

Everything in my wish list is already here. Other than that, i need DLNA capability.
Thanks'
Dean on 3 January 2010:
1. Divx Codec
2. H.264 Codec
3. FLV Codec
That is all.
hridheek on 3 January 2010:
same as dean…and the when photo and music apps are running it fails to show the running app symbol in the menu unlike calendar messaging and contacts which show while running…
Dean on 3 January 2010:
Also, animated themes like in the promo videos which showed widget menus being animated during rotating..
Hell, just make the firmware an upgrade to maemo….
hridheek on 3 January 2010:
we have seen many touch screen phones by now from various companies and all of them have managed to get the most important for a touch device right….its the visual and theme effects..be it dissolving or sliding screen menus or which ever is candy to the eye…and there is not a single effect like that…the first n97 ad boasted abt the multiple desktops just sliding out of the screen…nokia have previously failed like this on the n96 and once again we fell for their trick…didnt expect this as i am a die hard fan of nokia….anyway…..GET THE SPECIAL TOUCH SCREEN EFFECTS NOKIA!!!!!!!!!!. and having the n97 feels no different from the other nseries devices like n82 n85 and n86…which feels really bad after spending so much on the phone….and i just wish i knew the guy who made the ram to 128 mb and reduced the processor to 434mhz..
Achin Jain on 3 January 2010:
I wish Nokia would take back all the N97s and upgarde the hardware and send it back… lol… The hardware is really not up to mark and is a major dampner to all the s/w enhancements they want to put in place…

He is in exile probably in the bunker in the Finish HQ
He/They made a big fail
jamie1984 on 4 January 2010:
Your views are probably echoed by majority of people who brought the phone
They would not bother now tho – they got the money
Surprising they still supporting us
an N900 successor for me if in July 2011 if Maemo is as good as it 'billed' or likely i end up with a Android based smartphone (been with Nokia for 7 years with the 3 phones i had).
N98 likely not going to happen N97 issues have probably put end to that and s60 too limited

I wish to not hear the Nokia Tune again. Also I would like to have something quite simple: a stable phone that I can pick up a call and be sure that it will not freeze.
Christoph on 8 January 2010:
To enable theme effects on the Nokia N97, open the setting menu, select “Themes” -> “General” (may be differently named) where you can switch between themes. From there, press the left softkey (“Options”), select “Theme effects” -> “On”. This will enable UI effects.
I have no idea what made them hide this in there.

i mean more effects than these like the other touch phones have….
Kijjakarn on 8 January 2010:
1) Rotation effect must be added everywhere, except for calling.
2) More smooth scroll in Web Browser, Photo Browser and Music. Also, enable smooth diagonal scroll in Web Browser, too.
3) Bug when pressing “Back” button on Music must be fixed.
4) Deactivate accelerometer while having calling actions.
5) Make better “Slide to unlock” for receiving calls.
6) Organise photos by folders, not by dates, or add some more options!
7) Hardware fixes available for free: loose hinge which makes sound when you shake the phone, camera lens scratches, and RAM upgrade.
przemekwu on 12 January 2010:
Not really. CPU is quite fast on my N97 mini, phone is acting much faster than my old N95(1), especially in maps and media playback. More MHz does not really means faster operations.
The real problem with N97 mini is a too small battery and a lot of bugs with current firmware.
