One way to zoom out is to modify URL. Find zoom parameter 'z' and replace the value manually with a smaller one.

This is great on my n900. I can zoom in with the mouse (drag from off screen from the left) with a double tap, but I can't figure out how to zoom out! Used to be 1 and 3 on my E90….

Awesome find, I didn't know google had a mobile maps site. And of course this is made even better with the MicroB geolocation plugin now available in the standard repository!
