Conversations on Nokia N900 Adds Support for Facebook Chat, AIM, MSN & More With Extra Protocol Plugins

This is big! The latest version of Extra Protocol Plugins for Conversations and Contacts on the Nokia N900 adds support for Facebook chat, AIM, MSN, and more. The integration of instant messaging within the contacts book on the N900 is already excellent, but the addition of more services make the N900 an even more powerful messaging device.

Nokia N900 Extra Protocol

After installation, you can go to Settings – VoIP and IM accounts to add your accounts. All your IM buddies will show up in the Contacts book, but you can view them by groups, too.

You can merge your contacts so that you have all your friends’ info stored in one place. The tight integration of instant messaging, text messaging, emails, and even VoIP is one of the many reasons I love the Nokia N900.

You can download Extra Protocols now from the Extras-testing repository in App Manager, but I have a feeling it will make it to Extras soon.

I don't think it will make Extras anytime soon, while there are serious bugs with the Facebook support…

Currently, there are 2 major bugs with Facebook:
    1) It duplicates address book contact cards every time a Facebook logs in/out….and merging makes no difference.
    2) Apon closing the Conversations app, it changes all the messages between 2 people, to the name of just 1 person, ruining the conversation history.

At the end of the day, it works, but it requires much work yet.

I wish I could actually use that, receiving Sametime message crashes the plugin which crashes Conversations, leading into eternal loop of crashing. :(

Also Hermes doesn't seem to like imported facebook contacts, in a lot of the cases, it failed retreiving contact info. Minor gripe although it is usable

Nice, but apparently enabling these protocols makes some of them disconnect reandomly.

I can confirm that I get random IM account disconnections from time to time….they are few and far between though.

    Another bug:
    3) When a new IM is recieved from Facebook, the built-in notification popups tells you, but counts the IM and all those before it, meaning it appears there are many IM messages waiting, but in reality there may actually only be one.

A minor and ignorable bug, but another bug none the less.

    I noticed that too…

If you unistall Hermes and then reinstall it, you will find it works with no issue.

has anyone notice a lag issue when the accounts are avtive?

  • arempee

i get this all the time. i have to merge my contacts almost eveyday because it duplicates my facebook contacts. i hope that this bug will be fix soon….

keep getting network error on AIM… other stuff is working

  • Sandy Smith

It is working with no problem but fried – and I mean fried – my battery. I had to disable and won't use this until that is addressed. Bummed too because I really needed that to work to get away from my Blackberry – now I carry both.
