Symbian Pokes at the iPhone During SXSW

I’m hanging out at SXSW this weekend with the winners from the WOM World Nokia video contest. The thousands of people who entered the convention center received a bag of goodies. Among the swag was a card-sized ad for Symbian with a nice little remark against the iPhone. Take a look.

Symbian’s ad says they’ve been outselling the iPhone 2:1 since 2007 and asks if anyone is interested in developing applications for the OS. I’m not sure whether or not the message will get results, but it’s definitely a fact that the iPhone is the most popular phone here at SXSW.

I heard we’ll be talking to some folks from Nokia this weekend. I’m not sure what it’s about, but you bet I’ll keep you updated.

  • Layar will only appear on a Symbian platform once the underlying hardware provides graphics acceleration. Like Nokia did 3-4 years ago with devices like the N95, N82 and friends. The only current device with a GPU is the N900 and it's not running Symbian.
This is the main reason why most AR development involving a Nokia handset uses an N95 - graphics HW acceleration + TV out.
Maybe they should have replaced Symbian with Meego?
