Nokia Messaging for Nokia N900 Missing From T-Mobile USA Users? (Updated)

Updated with Nokia’s response below. I updated my Nokia N900 to Maemo 1.2 and wanted to start everything from scratch. The first thing I wanted to set up was my email. To get push email on the Nokia N900, I needed to add my Gmail accounts through the Nokia Messaging option. To my surprise, it was not listed as an option after I updated.

Twitter user @JJKLEE suggested to replace my T-Mobile USA SIM card with another card to see Nokia Messaging as an email option on the Nokia N900. I inserted my AT&T SIM and there it was back on the list. I thought I was imagining things, so I put the T-mobile SIM card back on. Nokia Messaging disappeared again!

This could mean Nokia Messaging doesn’t like T-mobile USA… the only provider that can provide 3G for the N900 in the USA! The workaround is to insert a different SIM card, set up Nokia Messaging, then put the T-mobile card back on.

Anyone else experiencing this issue on their Nokia N900 with T-mobile or any other SIM cards?

Update: Davis Fields from the Nokia Messaging team confirmed the issue and assures us they are working on it. Here’s the note he sent:

We are aware (and currently resolving) the fact that you cannot create a new Nokia Messaging account using a US T-Mobile SIM. Should have a fix by next month – realize that’s not a great answer, but, would rather tell you what’s going on than leave you in the dark.

    I don't think is Operator related, I have the same issue since 1.1.1. I strongly think is something with the Nokia Messaging server. And how to solve it? Relax. Listen some music that you like and time to time click again on “create new account”. Magically, it will appear in the list.

    I made a lot of tests with PR1.2 and flashed like 4 or 5 times… You know… and this was my fix and the best fix I can offer. If someone have some clever solution, great. =]

    I'm using T-Mobile prepaid SIM and encountered the same issue after upgraded to PR1.2.
    Before that, I could use it…
    Fortunately I have AT&T SIM also, and I have tried it and set it up.
    And then, I replaced to T-Mobile SIM again and it works as before.

    I experienced the same thing, there's a thread about it on t.m.o and it is definitely carrier related. http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=53872 there's also a bugzilla entry, but it's marked as worksforme, sadly.

    I talked to a Nokia representative with regards to this. He stated that about 2 months ago, TMobile USA disabled some of Nokia's features, which includes Nokia Messaging. It could also be the problem why I wasn't able to use OTA to update my phone. I had to use NSU (which was no problem for me) in order to update my phone to PR 1.2. Hope it answers a few questions.

    no i updated to 1.2 and it works fine. i did not recieve one text the day of update.

    Had the same problem with PR1.1.1 as well and used the same workaround. I was able to add Nokia Messaging with my T-mobile sim the first time I signed up but when I tried installing it after re-flashing, it disappeared from the list. Put a different SIM card and it was back.

    I have a question, Is it possible if i can have my emails download on my N900 instead of inbox connecting to the server to get the emails in my inbox ?

    After updating to PR. 1.2, the unlimited $10 web plan I had with T-mobile does not work anymore. This PR. 1.2 is full of spyware

    I had the same experience:
    t-mobile, unlimited web, US, did a flash installation of PR1.2 => no Nokia Messaging b4 and after restoring the backup file, though it worked fine before.
    Reflashed got the same result, but after restoring the backup file my account just appeared magically!!

    PR 1.2 changes your TMobile internet settings to 'epc.tmobile.com.'
    The $10 plan is 'internet2.voicestream.com.' This should make it work.
