I will say this, Nokia seems to intentionally screw up every new phone they release. The X7 has massive memory but a fixed focus camera and no TV out. The N8 has the best camera but not enough memory. The E7 has TV out and Document EDITOR but a fixed focus camer and not enough memeory. How is it possible this company can make so many models of phones and not get even one of them right? The best phones Nokia ever made, 6700 classic and E52, they discontinue them. It's as if Nokia takes whatever is logical and does the opossite.

I have a 16gig N8, reasonably new (only 2 days old) with the newest software installed. I get this all the time when i try to add pictures on my phone list, even with all other programmes closed.

Hi everybody, I was thinking of an amazing trick to do, except, that I don't know where I should post it. aint like I'm new to the forum yet I want everybody to read this.....
I'm a C++ Programmer however I've minimal to no clue bout compiling S^3 apps, but if anyone can put me in the right direction, that'd be absolutely great...

So let's get to the point....
How about 15 Gigs of ram on N8 sounds astounding and legendary... and mostly unbelievable..
I do believe it's possible if I can somehow manage to force the phone read the E drive (Mass memory drive) as THE D: Drive (Ram Drive).
I cooked my own firmware and made alot of modification to the current exsisting firmware. but again, i don't have what it takes to make it go SYMBIAN ! SOME HELP WOULD BE REALLY REALLY APPRECIATED.
I was also thinking bout another trick which is to expand ram through partly using a dedicated space on the E drive, as in Windows pagefile.sys.
Please.....Let everyone know about this and e-mail me if you can give me sometips on how to proceed... I'm intending to share this with everyone... and credits to all who have helped me.
E-mail me at TrueBloodVampirism[at]Ovi[dot]com

Have the Nokia N8 on trial and when plugging it into my Windows 7 desktop I can see two memories: Mass Memory 7GB/14GB free and Phone Memory 0 bytes out of 256MB :-(

For the life of me I cannot find the area of the phone where I can free up memory. Nothing is open as well, and the few apps I have installed are nowhere nearly adding up to 256MB. So I am really puzzled.

Any ideas?

Well, I've seen a video, and heard the guy explaining that, the phone works really fluid, cause this new phone has a hardware graphics accelerator, and he mentions that the device's cpu will be in charge of running the apps and the OS, and that the graphcis accelerator will run all the homescreen and graphics related stuff, so the phone shall run flwalessly regardless of the ram, I've also seen in some other forums that the phone will 135mb of free ram on bootup.

I didn't see that video prior to my post. Still though, 512mb of RAM would be great, not for the built in apps like the music player or photo gallery but for the third party ones that tend to annihilate RAM.

I just asked a person at Nokia about the N8 and when the other colors will become available and they happen to mention that it will have 512mb of RAM. Was this a silent update to the RAM or am I just oblivious?

SOOOOOOOO FAIL NOKIA! You try to hide your underpowered hardware with Symbian, and it still failed in your demonstration. 256MB ram is less than some devices from 2 years ago!

Everyone assumes how widgets will affect battery, memory, etc, but have no point of reference to compare it to. Remember, S^3 offloads all the formerly heavy graphics issues to the GPU, and only a small efficient part of the work gets left for the proc.

So the amount of free RAM will be greater even without the physical RAM increase. Widgets should operate much better with a more optimized OS. They weren't that much of an issue with the N97 after some updates, and should only get better with a more efficient OS and added RAM.

The supposed overhead for Qt apps is theoretical, but doesn't exist. The Mozilla developer team and various Qt devs will attest to the fact that virtually no latency occurs from Qt.

Qt apps use LESS resources than Avkon. In fact, Avkon was part of the bottleneck with Symbian past. Qt solves that issue. And keep in mind, the Avkon parts were mostly graphical in nature, and have been offloaded to the GPU, not the app proc.

So your thoughts on Qt being a resource liabillity are unfounded as far as my limited knowledge goes. I may be wrong, but doubt it. There are already Qt apps on older devices, and they ran fine before, both on Symbian and Maemo/MeeGo. What makes you think otherwise?

I just installed the latest and greatest of Opera Mobile for my N97 and it destroys my phone. Within minutes it says memory full. This is with nothing else running. If the N8 really wants to compete it needs 512mb if not more. If they are going to be so ahead of the curve with their 12mp camera and wide screen lens, they might as well as add as much memory as possible. Third party apps will drain the memory far too fast. They always do. They still have a month to add more, right?

The world is going insane. My old personal computer has only 256 Mb of ram, but handles well some tabs opened in mozilla, along with an instant messaging program and winamp running, on windows xp. So why do mobile devices need such big amounts of ram? Why do we even call them mobiles, when the hardware inside them compete with the hardware a laptop has. The low memory error is a nightmare for real, i encountered it very often on my good ol' n95 (in this case is understandable, with only 20 Mb of ram free at boot), but with 150 Mb of free ram or more at boot, in the case of the error appearing while browsing a few websites, i believe it is a software issue rather than a hardware one.

......This was triggered when the Nokia rep was trying to play a video from the gallery. A few seconds after the message, she held the menu button to show the current apps running. They were the browser, application menu, gallery, photo editor, social networking app, and the WiFi wizard....

Sweet Jesus, my N95 8Gb can manage that without memory low errors :-D

I have a Samsung Wave (which has 512MB of memory). I occasionally see Memory Low errors when running 4 or more apps...Perhaps it's a firmware issue, perhaps not. To put only 256MB in a phone of this category is commercially non competitive as a) lots of other phones have 512 mb and b) at the sale price I expect the phone to run the latest applications for at least 1.5 years.

In the video you can see there are like 12 apps running, and in those are the hard ones, video player, audio player, web browser, image viewer and the PIM apps too. So there is a lot of ram being used there.

Commonly I use the browser, the pim and the media player at the same time, so I think it will be better than the N97, also I'm not big fan of network widgets, I like the shortcuts, music player and that's it.

That is not the RAM, that is the ROM, the C: memory is ROM is little, in my N97 after installing the Ovi Maps update, the Ovi Store Update, and the Messaging, it leaves like 20mb free, but after a few weeks is like 10mb.

One of the problems at nokia phones is that Ovi Maps, and all others I mention, if have constant updates, let users uninstall the previous version, not just hide it in the much needed memory

I have to admit the ram is the only concern i have with this phone; the idea of Virtual Ram never sits well with me, we all know that that is just a crock.
I hope the 256mb will be enough but i have my doubts; it doesn't make sense as to why Nokia would cut a corner on the memory IF it was an issue of cutting corners.

Now if the N9 isn't close to industry leading in RAM, then I panic.

I like the level of RAM on the N8, since I see the N8 as the midrange entry device for the masses that probably wont tax a device much anyway. There may be a higher RAMed version wilth a bigger screen later, ala N95-2.

Symbian supposedly now supports virtual RAM, so assuming they make the right amount of VR available, it shouldn't be an issue. And the error could have been the result of not having Virtual RAM available at that stage of the build.

Well, I dunno- my N82 with the last firmware released (35.0.0.2) boots up with about 80 MB RAM available for apps (out of 128 total) and I've very, very rarely encountered memory full problems despite concurrently running dozens of apps.

Exactly. Nokia has been the hardware leader for so long (highest megapixel cameras, multitasking, video calling since 2005, biggest cards) and now 256mb. NO! I expect at least 1gb of RAM and 64gb of expandable memory. The camera better be at least 12 megapixel if it's already on the N8. And give it MeeGo for christ's sake. I don't care about fart apps, I want a device with power. Don't worry about the cost, we are not like those toys who buy subsidized apples.
