Prototype Nokia RM-626 Gets More Exposure on Video

Negri teased us earlier with 3 photos of an unnamed prototype Nokia device, but now they deliver a 4-minute hands-on video. It says Nokia C0-00 on the back of the device, but the model info within the phone settings shows N00. Whatever it’s called, this device is certainly getting attention from Qwerty keyboard-lovers.

The video is embedded below. Head over to the blog if it’s not visible in your RSS reader.

The device looks thin enough and I like the reassuring clicks when they slide the keyboard. It features dual LED camera flash, instead of the stronger xenon flash on the Nokia N8. It seems to be running Symbian^3 as well.

Learning about this prototype creates a problematic question for me. Which do I want more? Xenon flash on the Nokia N8 or the Qwerty keyboard on this unnamed model RM-626? What do you think?

    Xenon!

  • EverythingBlaxx

Keyboard. The lack of one is the reason I won't bat an eye at the N8

Leaning towards the xenon too. I wonder if the screen on this prototype is bigger than 3.5in?

Going with keyboard too. I would love this design for N9, but a little thicker would be nice. Slim phones seem to have problems falling out of peoples hands (especially mine… N900 is a little too think though)

  • http://thenokiablog.com Mark Guim

oh yeah… N900 is definitely thick

I want both. There has to be a way to make it happen. And guess what? If Nokia doesn't do it, another company will. Then Nokia would look very bad in my eyes! :(

The *only* way I could deal with a VKB, would be if I had 100% control over the entire layout and could set it up anyway I pleased.

I wonder what C# this will be anyway, C5 or 6 or top of the line 7? Nokia has a tendency to showcase the best first…

Another weird aspect is the downgrade from 12 MP to 8 MP camera… Camera vs. Keyboard? maybe a N8-01 or N8-QWERTY model to let you choose what's more important for you?

  • http://thenokiablog.com Mark Guim

Good point about the megapixels, but I don't really need more than 5MP. All of the photos I take with cameraphones are only uploaded and viewed online. I care more about the quality of the photos rather than the size.

It comes down to quality pictures vs. quality typing.

Nokia is probably betting that most users (myself included) don't need both. However some do and those, sadly, will have to choose. I'm going with the better pictures.

With all the muttering about Nokia choosing MeeGo as the platform for their future high-end releases, is this running Symbian as a placeholder? Or does this suggest that the N9 will be shipped with Symbian? My hope is that they move on from Symbian; this hardware looks amazing, but Symbian does not!

Hey Mark i want the 12MPX! For a Qwerty device i will wait for the real N9 with MeeGo OS! :D

Most likely the video is mislabled. It could be a N8 variant or even E7. The form factor is taken straight from N8, but this is lacking the high end multimedia features you'd ecpect from N series phones.

  • http://twitter.com/funkyhouser Pekka Puikkonen

I bet the full keyboard just takes up too much room for a better camera. They couldnt fit that camera into N8 either.

The other factore of course is the price. Most S^3 devices should land under 450 euros.

Given what Nokia has said lately the various *series, I'm convinced this is not an Nseries device, but the new top-of-the-line Eseries. With the Nseries being more focused on high-end tablet-style MeeGo-powered devices, it makes sense a Symbian-powered device with a 4 row keyboard and 5MP non-Zeiss camera would be more of a business-oriented Eseries device.

  • http://www.twitter.com/warmth Daniel "warmth" Delgado

You made your point… but users like me that doesn't want to use more cameras that my phone and that uses apps like Gravity to upload the pics (it doesn't matter the size of the pics cause it auto rescale it before uploading) the size it is important… cause that are the picture I'm gonna save for my memories! :P

  • http://www.twitter.com/warmth Daniel "warmth" Delgado

I don't think the problem is entirely the keyboard's room but the flex to make it hide-able… and the mechanics involved in that process also… more pieces not present in N8 initial design…

In my case I would prefer a little thicker phone but with all N8 features and more… instead of replacing features for a QWERTY keyboard…

  • http://thenokiablog.com Mark Guim

I was also wondering if this was non-Zeiss or they just didn't include the label on the proto. As far as I can remember, Nseries phones included Zeiss lens.

  • http://twitter.com/traecer Traecer

Yeah, it's not clear this is an Nseries device at all. Even though the device's firmware claims the device is an “N00″ (common with Nseries prototypes), the back cover claims it to be “C0-00″. So it seems pretty clear when this prototype was made Nokia was concentrating on making a good device and would figure out where it fit in the product line later. (Which is a good thing IMHO.)

  • Julz

it's an obvious prototype of the N8
check the firmware date, this thing is old.

they just upgraded the N8 and released new prototypes instead

  • Julz

all camera sensors have similar size, the lens is what matters most/size differs
anyway its an obvious N8 prototype from march, same specs same age (8MP/new qwerty keyboard)

these guys slept on the phone for month and decided it would make a little buzz or maybe even clicks on their site thats all

  • HKN

    OMG, what a keyboard!

  • Dennis

like the qwerty on my n900 but cam is worse than n95 so i prefer to have XENON at n8 .but it should be better an eseries. hardware is underpowered. 900mhz min ,32gb and FULL flash 10 support ( hope for meego) would be aceptable.
