Study: Smartphone Owners Abandoning Nokia for Lack of Apps & Poor Quality OS

YouGov, a research company in the UK, reported some very worrying news for Nokia. During the month of June, they found only 33% of smartphone users will consider getting a Nokia as their next device and only 10% expect to purchase Nokia. When asked if they are likely to recommend a Nokia device to friends, only 12% said yes. Apple, on the other hand, has a 70% recommendation score.

I don’t see the number of people asked in YouGov’s report, but they’ve illustrated the results in percentages below.

You can see that both scores for Nokia decreased since December. YouGov reported the key reasons mentioned by those moving away from Nokia are “the lack of available programmes, or ‘apps’, and perceived poor quality of the operating system, as well as merely wanting a change of brand.”

The disturbing results from YouGov seem to match our own polls. A bunch of Nokia blog readers are ditching Nokia for iPhone or Android. Answer the polls and share your reasons if you haven’t yet.

  1. Count me as one of those that is switching. Been a loyal Nokia user since I bought the N95 8GB. Have owned an N82, E71, 5800 and N86 as well. Have always loved the camera and video capabilities of Nokia phones. But the iPhone 4 now has a decent camera and 720p video recording. Along w/it's UI and hardware features make it a compelling reason for me to switch. Yes…..the apps are another reason as well. Ordered mine yesterday. Still keeping my N95 and N82 but selling the rest. Was not sold by the N8.

  2. My N82 is close to 2.5 years old and still going strong. Nothing since then from Nokia that's worth upgrading to. N900 is an evolutionary dead end- it won't be able to run Meego properly when it comes out. N8 is again the first and last Symbian based high end device.
I'm not crazy about touchscreen phones anyway because you need both hands to use them apart from having to look at the screen always.

  3. good luck with the reception issues. I'd rather get an Android with better specs.

  4. I just switched from a Nokia N95-1 to a Samsung Galaxy S. Its been a god phone for a bit now, unfortunately, Nokia hasnt moved on since then. Their N900 is still a prototype and seems destined to remain so, the N8 looks promising but Symbian^3 doesnt Excite. The Samsung Galaxy is awesome, but Android however good still needs some work.

  5. For me HTC is the first!

  6. I'd rather get a phone from a company that doesnt take their clients for dumb cash cows. the antenna issue is bad, but ok.. whats bad is apple lying about it not existing and various issues like that.
(not to mention they're symbolizing the 1984 bad guys from their advert now, nearly 20 years later – apple is evil)

    Thus Android it is

  7. People say: “Poor Quality OS”, but what they really mean is “Poor Quality of UI”.

The OS itself has no big issues. Symbian has the major capabilities and quality of Android and iOS.

  8. I love Nokia but of late I have been thinking about trading in my Nokia for an iPhone simply because of all the stuff that comes along with an iPhone. With the number of apps out there that can make life that much easier, Nokia is going to lose market share unless they do something about it real quick!

  9. The problem with Nokia is its Marketing Department.. there doesn't seem to be one.. All we hear from the others out there is how they have all the apps and the best OS (this is from their PR Dpt) and what happens? the lemmings flock towards it and believe the Hype.. Nokias Marketing Department seems to feel their products speak for themselves but that is just not true.
