Obviously you dont live in an area where the signal is weak. I do and when i place the N97 mini handset to my ear it drops out completely and i have to call the person back. Not great if you are using it for work!!
I dont want to change my phone but i may have to as ive put up with it for 9 months and its costing me customers.

Obviously Apple are trying to illustrate the problem is widespread and doesn't just apply to their iPhones. Can't blame them for trying though, right?

I don't see how this wasn't picked up during their testing before they launched the product. Doubt this would have much affect on their sales either.

It seems after much research twatpple engineers have managed to work out a method of getting the Nokia N97 mini to drop signal. Ensure the battery is about to run out and then cover the area where the antenna is located. Nokia have been in this game for a while, 3.5G connection takes more power to maintain a connection, if the Twatpple engineers had continued holding the phone that way, they might have noticed the phone drop to a different connection.

If you have trouble reproducing death-grip with your Nokia device, try this tiny & fun application below. It makes parody of the whole antenna discussion and lets you experience apple-like signal loss in real-life.
http://www.qutomo.com/kannykka-kivaa/qutomoante...

This is just a normal features of wave signals. You put something in between to reduce it's intensity/amplitude. But for mobile phone, you don't want to completely stop them, like Apple iPhone4 does. So it is pity by Apple to keep on repeating this well know issue just to get the heat away from them. If a phone cost you alot, you expect alot too. That is just how it is.

Nokia responded to apple because Steve Jobs mentioned them directly in the press conference held to address the antennagate issue. Nokia just needed to set the facts straight.

LOL this is So amusing. Why did Nokia respond to Apple when they were not even mentioned in the Conference (Like HTC and RIM were). By speaking out in a "Look at ME!!" kind of way they invited this. Both Companies are acting childish need to be put on timeout.

if you watch the video closely enough you'll notice he's hold so strong that he's shaking.
beside, try to hold your phone like he does (by the bottom itself) and do as if you were calling, you'll notice it's very awkward, because your hand covers the speaker and it's very uncomfortable as your hand will also block your cheek.

on the iphone 4 it's simply holding by the side (which is probably the way everyone holds a phone while making a call), and since a finger is enough to cut the signal on the iphone 4, that's a real problem

The people at Apple are bad losers. They simply have to admit that they made a mistake, fix the issue in the iPhone 4 and stop production until they have done that. Furthermore they must give their customers some kind of compensation.

It is very clear to me that they do not care about their customers, only about their money.

Probably in their mind i in iPhone (and all the other Apple i... products) stands for idiot!!!

http://conversations.nokia.com/2010/06/28/how-do-you-hold-your-nokia/
conclusion :
"Of course, feel free to ignore all of the above because realistically, you’re free to hold your Nokia device any way you like. And you won’t suffer any signal loss. Cool, huh?"

i don't think anybody holds a phone like while talking. its ridiculous. not even while browsing, you use the phone so. Apple is trying all ways of justifying its problems without simply admitting their mistake and apologizing.

you need to be in an area where the signal is already very bad
i use phonenetinfo or smth like that to show the signal in dbm
if you've more than -100dbm you can't reproduce the bar drops, because the signal isn't attenuated as much as the iphone (20-30db for the iphone vs 5-8 for the nokia)

i tested the N95 the antennas are on top but you also need to cover bottom (so 2 hands to cover the whole phone)
then you need to be at around -100 to -103dbm (its 4-5 bars) and it will drop to 1 bar (-110dbm, its 2-3x less loss than apple's) and data still goes through, and it's still 3.5g (apple's switch to edge and data stalls)

a world of difference. im pretty sure the N97 is similar

i don't like apple's childish way of handling this too much

when u try to hide an antenna , u WILL lose reception bars, no matter what device u r using. BUT nokia puts the antennas in places that u wouldnt totally hide in a normal use. if u want to lose more bars in an UNNATURAL way, u can just rip off the antenna of the back and thats it… no bars!
for the iphone 4 to lose signal, all u have to do is just touch a single spot, in a very usually touched place.. and u WILL lose signal!
thats why i never had this problem on my N97/E72/N85/n95… nokia puts the antennas away from the user! they dont put them in “the most likely to touch part ” of the phone like apple!

hum... i just tried this with my friend's n97mini and it didn't register any drop in signal. was i not holding it tight enough? seems like this guy's really trying to choke it out.

What's worse for them is that the N97 still has a signal

In their own video of the Iphone4 they don't even hold onto the phone for a period as long and the reception drops down to almost nothing then they quickly let go

Agreed, signal drop, but not lost, and the iPhone signal fails with the tip of the finger, not even the entire hand.

hold my e71 the same way the video shows. no bar drop. only if I cover the bottom, (with 2 hands), of the phone it will drop 3/4 bars.

this is not awkward - this is real life.
my N97mini does the same and also X6 dorps the bars when holding in the flat hand and covering only the backside (e.g. during www surfing).
this phenomenon has nothing to do with bad phones -. this is physic, not more; and we all have to live with the fact that cellphone will drop theier bars in certaiun circumstances

Any antenna will suffer a signal drop if you hold it. The closer and tighter you hold it the worse it gets. The problem with mobile devices is positioning this antenna where one wouldn't normally hold the damn thing. It's a well known fact, they took a design decision which I am sure they knew the impact and now they have to live with it.

You only need one finger to make the iPhone 4 signal drop to zero.

I used both of my hands on my N97 and couldn't get the signal to drop.

Obviously they're being petty. The iPhone 4's antenna gets screwed by the very act of holding it - because the metal back cover is connected to it and contact with the human hand will bork the signal.

The N97's antenna is not located where the user would interfere with it when holding the phone naturally. If you deliberately hold it as to cover it up, then guess what? The signal will drop!
