Nokia E7 Hands-on Overview

The Nokia E7 was officially announced at Nokia World and we got Niina from the Experience Lounge to give us a hands-on overview. The Nokia E7 is equipped with a 4-inch touchscreen display featuring Nokia ClearBlack technology for improved outdoor visibility and a full keyboard. It is marketed as the ultimate business smartphone.

The Nokia E7 also features an 8MP camera, but does include Carl Zeiss lens. The phone in this video does not show final sales software, so there’s time for improvements. Estimated retail price is EUR 495, excluding taxes and subsidies. It is expected to release Q4 2010.

Excellenbt specs. Two questions: 1) Was the Symbian^3 OS / firmware responsive. 2) Was the screen’s resolution sufficient for display size.

    • http://thenokiablog.com Mark Guim

Resolution is 640×360 but it didn’t bother me. If you’re worried about the display not being sharp, it’s probably noticeable if placed next to another screen with higher resolution. I’d want to compare it next to a Galaxy S to be sure

      • johnson

its still saddens me that nokia is really cutting display resolution when others have much higher resolutions and cost roughly the same amount. I’d hate to say it but nokia is really losing this race.

      • Ossineia

When you’re coming from the E90 or the N900 the resolution is a downgrade. A sacrifice I am not willing to make.

        • solid0snake

Why would you change the N900 anyway? Symbian³ is quite impressive but it still lacks support and according to Nokia it is already outdated cuz Symbian⁴ is coming next year.

I hope Nokia finally shows their Meggo flagship device. o.O

        • v900

Screen not the only downgrade. One year old N900 has a much faster CPU, and a GPU in the same league as the N8. Surprisingly enough, if you’re looking to get a futureproof handset and the most bang for your buck, N900 is the way to go!

          200$ cheaper too, no?

Now I don’t know what to get. The N8 had me with the wide-angle 12mp camera but the 4″ screen of the E7 might make me switch. I’m really torn. Give me a N8 with the screen of an E7 and I’m sold. Anyone else having second thoughts?

  • Frank

    No front facing camera? :O

    • Der

It has a front-facing VGA camera dont worry. It is in the black screen bezel.

i’m having second thoughts too now… I just don’t want to wait until December for this phone to come out. I might get N8 first, then sell it once E7 becomes available, and then get N9 :) @Mark, did you mean to say E7 doesn’t have Carl Zeiss lens?

    • dark angel

      n9=e7 the same phone

      • http://soulexperimentation.blogspot.com/ igudov

I’m pretty sure N9 will be the next high end MeeGo, it’s definitely not E7.

    • http://thenokiablog.com Mark Guim

I meant to say the Nokia E7 does not have Carl Zeiss optics that makes the N8 so great

N8 does not have qwerty-keyboard and thats why it’s useless. Okej – I don’t have keyboard on my Canon IXUS 1000 HS but it’s still great camera thus I can’t call with it.

    • Sid

Love the potential of it – keyboard a necessity for me, large screen also a real plus – anything less than 4″ makes web pages awkward (and I include all iPhones in that!) – apart from this, only HTC Desire HD and Samsung Galaxy S fit that large enough to be useful/small enough to be portable (ie not a tablet or iPad) space. Symbian 3 will be fine and Nokia are now promising incremental UI change to all Symbians.
But…….. like lots of Nokia supporters, confidence has been dented and I need to see them actually delivering that incremental change SOON – first bits this Q would be good

…… AND – they need to do much, much more to see that Symbian gets “trendy” apps as soon as Android/iOS. Most of them really don’t matter and are just marketing fluff, but the impression their absence creates is damaging.

  • v900

    @ David

“large screen also a real plus – anything less than 4″ makes web pages awkward”

Yes, but don’t forget about the relatively low resolution the E7 has. On a 4 inch screen 640*360 is bound to get chunky…
The E7 has half the number of pixels than the Desire HD or Droid X, and two and a half time fewer than the iPhone.

    NHD 640*360 230,400 pixel
    WVGA 854* 480 410,880 pixel
    DVGA 960*640 614,400 pixel

But there’s a lot of great choices out there, if you want to grab something else, while Meego gets finished in a year or two.

If you NEED a keyboard you should look into getting a Desire Z or Motorola Milestone 2. Besides the better screen, they have double the ram, a much faster CPU, and a 5mp camera. Screensize is 3,7 inches though.

But Samsung has a Galaxy model out with a keyboard: SPH D700 Galaxy S has a hi res 4 inch screen with the usual high end specs from their Galaxy line. Motorola and LG also have some great 1ghz handsets with keyboards, but a 3,7 inch screen.

If you don’t mind Windows Mobile, Toshiba and NEC both have a Dynapocket handset out, with a 1Ghz Snapdragon CPU and 4 inch 800*480 pixel screens.

And finally there’s Windows Phone 7… Dell Venue Pro has a keyboard, 4 inch screen and 1 Ghz CPU, while HTC 7 Pro has 3,6 inch model but with an amazing keyboard.

And rumour has it, that Palm has 5 new handsets out in a couple of months!
