Nokia N8 Still Shipping by End of September, says Nokia

Nokia is on damage control by posting a shipping update on their official Conversations blog. The main message is that Nokia still expects to start the shipments by the end of September, but customers should expect to receive their Nokia N8 in October. Interestingly, nothing was mentioned about ‘final amends.’

Here’s the full post from Nokia Conversations:

There have been a few stories this morning about the N8 availability which we feel need clarification. As we have previously said, we still expect to start the shipments by the end of the third quarter. As with every global launch, when the device reaches the hand of the customer will vary by market and operator.

We have received a record number of online pre-orders for the Nokia N8. We had targeted our online pre-order customers to receive their N8s by the end of September. As it can take time from the beginning of shipment to arriving at their doorstep, in full transparency, we have advised our pre-order customers that they should expect their new Nokia N8 in October.

Update: I reached out to Nokia USA after reading in the comments below that availability of the Nokia N8 is now showing “end of October” on the pre-order page. This is their response:

The first shipments of the Nokia N8 are expected to start by the end of September, and consumers in the U.S. are expected to receive their devices thereafter. As with every global launch, when the devices reach customers will vary market to market.

Sorry but the Nokia website in the USA just changed their availability of the Nokia N8 to end of October…….

Thanks for the heads up. It could mean that those who already preordered will get theirs on time and those who haven’t yet have to wait until end of October.

So just to reiterate they will ship at the end of September, but only for those who have already pre-ordered before they announced that it will now be delayed?

        • Anonymous

that pretty much sums it up.

        Exactly!!! I pre-ordered mine in August! :D

    • Venctsi

Do you know when exactly they changed the date?

Sad to read about delays…Since it was suppose to come out in August… If anything it will release in Europe by the end of September..Don’t know why it is coming in the end of October to the States… Maybe not enough units? Anyways one more delay and Nokia will start to lose more customers…But I am patient…

probably not enough units or they want to tweak the UI. I would be assuming that europe (specially finland, lucky us), will get first shipments at the end of this month, because of the salo factory. It is public secret that first production batches (expecially high-end stuff), rolls out from Nokia’s finnish factory at Salo.

I think Nokia keeps the factory in finland mostly for r&d (it is directly operated by Nokia and is near the finnish r&d labs, so they get faster prototyping and better security) and good will (it makes the finnish goverment happy, when nokia employs people in finland), because the production costs must be significantly larger than in asian factories.Actually Nokia had the whole factory on production halt and people on forced leave, because it was not profitable enough. They put it back on full production couple months ago. Said they made they made some arrangement in production and logistics to make it possible to keep the factory in Finland. Probably didn’t want to lose the good will.

So Finland/Europe usually gets stuff first, because of the shorter shipping/transport time. I would assume, that the october date is the for international shipments from the large asian factories.

My experience has been the Nseries devices from Finland are solid and the ones from China fail fast. My current N86 is Chinese and was gimpy out of the box.

All Nseries devices should always be made in Finland, esp if we are going to have to buy them non-subsidized (as in the US).

Nokia is lying. I just talked to Nokia representative and I was told that I will get my pre-ordered N8 at the end of October.

all Nokia websites have updated to “end of october” laaaaaame, the least they could do is tell us Why (obviously its to ensure the product is better but an explanation is needed)

i’ve heard rumors of a short supply of amoled’s to the integration of QT 4.7

Updated the post w/ response from Nokia USA

    • Jimbo

Their share price took a whacking yesterday on news of the delay, so this is obviously damage control from Nokia and trying to manage ‘the message’. Their PR/Comm. dept has been consistently dreadful.

    I like N8,so good

  • Honza

I preordered N8 on 08/24/2010. Seven days after the actual peorder I received an confirmation email stating: ”anticipated sending date: 10/01/2010”. I had no idea about the delay until I read trough this fun forum. I really don’t care about the wait, but I do have to say Nokia needs to work on their marketing and PR. I have never seen such a mess and confusion. I’ll keep you guys updated about the status of my preorder. Good luck to all of us..

Thanks for letting us know. Please keep us updated.

This is bad. My brother pre-ordered from NokiaUsa back in august as well, and got an email saying his unit will be shipped mid October. I seriously am considering buying something else instead of the N8. Nokia seems to be lying and contradicting itself. I dont really trust Nokia and makes me feel like the N8 isnt all I thought it would be.

Do you remember when exactly in August? Just curious

  • Victor
