Meego Handset UI Demo on TI OMAP 4 Processor

DeviceVM uploaded a video on Youtube showing a demo of the Meego touch framework and Handset UI running on a TI OMAP 4, the newest in the line of processors. The video of the framework does not include the fancy graphics or transitions yet, so don’t get too excited. Watch the video.

They showed the contact list, where you can call or send SMS. They also showed how you can add contact. We saw the photo viewer, which looked very similar to the one on the Nokia N900. There was a quick look at the settings where we saw some of the connectivity options. I noticed the option for chat accounts, which seemed to include Facebook, Google Talk, and Jabber. There were probably more, but the person who gave the demo did not scroll down. The last thing we saw was the lock and unlock screen.

Before you start complaining in the comments, let me just remind you that this video was not meant for end consumers. We still haven’t seen the final UI that will be on Nokia’s Meego device.

So how many people called that phone number for Mark Lee? lol

      haha, did you?

    • Popeye

HAHA. 408 = San Jose, CA! I think I shall give my old pal Mark a call.

That looks nowhere near finished(though I really like how it works i.e. system structure, multitasking, etc..), how is Nokia going to release N9 by the year’s end?

    • http://thenokiablog.com Mark Guim

I feel the same. Let’s see if they’ll be able to release it by the end of year

      • Anonymous

doesn’t seem like they’ll be able to. seems like a completed core will be released by the end of the year, though. apparently they’re surprisingly on schedule:

        • Anonymous

that is the plan for manufactures not for users. a version completed for manufactures doesn’t mean is a final version for users. that version is only for hardware testing, and it has the core finished and basic actions. after that it will come to the finesse part.

since is based on omap 4 I don’t think we’ll see any device this year.
also it will be stupid to release meego this year since they just lunched the symbian3 devices. the best time to start shipping meego will be end of february 2011.

The N9 won’t be running this version of MeeGo, the N9 will be running Maemo6 (aka Harmattan), although it will be branded as MeeGo. Confused? You will be. :) Thanks to Qt the differences between Maemo6 and MeeGo won’t be that significant or worth discussing.

The version of MeeGo demonstrated above is still many months away from completion, hopefully it will be offered as a free upgrade to N9 owners.

I think I read someplace that the N9 won’t release until 2011….. Anyway, this looks good. I am going to sit symbian ^3 out and wait for this.

Thanks. Do you remember the link?

Thanks for sharing. To be honest, I’m a little bit scared by this. In my opinion, Maemo was a great OS that had a very nice UI. It had to gain in experience and maturity, but it had a lot of potential. Here they are starting the UI process all over again and I really hope that they’ll end up with something better than Maemo, or it will be a total failure and a complete waste of time.

I think ill stick with android. The ui does look promising, but so did maemo and nokia completely bailed that phone. If this OS matures enough I’ll probably consider it

    Not impressed.

      How would you change it?

      • AP

I would speed this video up 300%. Was this in slow motion or why it’s so sticky?

  • AP

Whow… MeeGo UI needs a huge amount of work to be done just to get nice look and feel. Now it looks like WIN 3.11. It seems to be also very very slow. As an N900 Maemo user I really hope much more speed on UI and superfast Browser on it.

  • Stunned

I am stunned by how bad this is in two respects: laggy, and a very clumsy interface.

You might argue that the lag is a function of early, non-optimized software, but this is a OMAP-4 — even early software should be quicker than shown.

The interface is even more inexcusable — with iOS, Android, webOS, Windows Mobile 7, Blackberry 6.0 already years ahead of what is shown here, even further polishing might bring it up to speed with Windows Mobile 6.

    Really, i am stunned.

The UI demonstrated is the stock/reference MeeGo Handset UI, the one you get for free with the open source OS, it’s not the UI that Nokia will be shipping with their handsets. Fear not, the Nokia Handset UI will have more bling.

As for the performance, well, it’s not optimised for OMAP4 at all (in fact, any optimisations will be for a different ARM arch which will impede performance even more on an OMAP4).

yes i love meego, and yes i know it’ll bring back a lot of people to the nokia boat. slap this on a decent hardware and we got a winner right there.
