Qt-enabled Symbian Smartphone Heading to AT&T in Q1 2011

Today, during AT&T Developer Summit at the Nokia Technical session in Las Vegas, Nokia announced two things. Number 1: Nokia extended the deadline for the $10M Calling All Innovators contest to March 31, 2011. Number 2: A new Qt enabled Symbian smartphone is coming to AT&T in Q1. They didn’t name or show this device, but my gut feeling says it will be the Nokia X7 that was leaked a couple of times already.

Nokia told the audience at the session that they had overwhelming response from Qt trainings in North America. A lot of people just got started and asked for more time. I totally understand since $10 million in cash, devices, and marketing prizes are up for grabs.

We’ve seen leaked photos of the Nokia X7 earlier this month. It had AT&T branding, Symbian OS, four speakers, 8 megapixel camera, and dual LEDs flash. There’s no official announcement yet, but CES isn’t over.

    The X7 looks damn nice.

The Debbie Downers would say “see, not enough interest even with $10m on the table!” :) But, the official explanation does make some sense.

Pity X7 was not released at the CES. :( I guess MWC then.

The reason is likely that Qt 4.7 (ie Qt Quick) is still not officially supported on S^3 (as in SDK and Ovi Store), and developers need a bit of time once it does come out. Always was a bit suspicious of the Jan 31 deadline.

Almost everyone I know who wants to develop for Symbian is waiting for these, as it simply makes little sense to go the manual or QWidget way when QML is so great for mobile UI’s and coming soon.

Yup, makes sense. Btw, do you know many developers who do want to develop for Symbian? :) And more specifically, US based developers (as they are likely critical part of Nokia’s comeback in the US)?

I am very glad to hear that they have moved the deadline for the Calling all Innovators contest as it was ridiculous to have a contest where only half of what a phone can do is available as an Qt mobility API, let alone a Symbian^3 mobile. Still no touch API for Qt.

The contest deadline should be set for 2 months AFTER all the Mobility APIs are working AND 2 months after the Qt SDK full set of tools with Symbian are available for Mac & Linux (not just Windows). Right now I have a nice little Qt app for Maemo.

Nokia X7 is a good smart phone. I’m impressed by the 360 x 640 display and an 8 megapixel camera.
