Nokia Windows Phone Concept Photos

Engadget got a couple of exclusive images of the Nokia Windows Phone devices. No word on hardware specifications yet since these are just concepts from the two companies. The devices look slim, colorful, and sexy. Photos after the jump.

The recent comments on The Nokia Blog regarding the Microsoft and Nokia partnership have been really negative so far. Do these photos change your mind a little?

Not a bit. At least when Apple did it, they retained control of their future. Nokia is betting everything on the success of Windows Phone 7, the platform performing even worse than Symbian in the markets at the moment.

Nokia, in essence, is now just a hardware manufacturer that has sold their soul to the Borg. At least if they’d gone with, for example, Android, they would have retained their own control. Android is at least open source and allows them to do whatever they want, however they want. Windows Phone 7 is the complete opposite. Nokia now has to do whatever Microsoft wants them to do to be able to run the platform on any future devices.

Glad I made the jump to Android last year. Nokia has completely lost my respect and any chance of me ever supporting them again.

The relationship between the two isn’t as black and white as Nokia = Hardware Microsoft = Software.

Nokia will have a lot more control over the WP7 features, you don’t actually believe Nokia just signed up with Microsoft’s demands without any of their own?

OVI Maps and a few other Nokia services will be part of WP7, Microsoft needs these as their solutions suck. It’s more a co-partnership than just signing up for an Android license as Nokia would have had to do if they went that route.

      • Mol

LOL. this is the way that will be: nokia hardware microsoft software. Nokia promoting windows phone. Windows phone becomes popular(still uncertain) and ZTE will come with nice 100$ Windows phones.
Similar situation happened with IBM and NEC.

Ex MS CEO kissing assmof Ballmer current, sorry former boss, giving his former boss a big help to boost the sales of a fail mobile ecosystem

        > The relationship between the two isn’t as black and white as Nokia = Hardware Microsoft = Software.

No, the second part should read like this.:

Microsoft = Unsuccessful, chronically late mobile software

        > Nokia will have a lot more control over the WP7 features, [...]

Spoken like somebody with no experience as a Microsoft licensee.

The minute Nokia signs this deal with MS, they become the junior partner — it’s just that simple. Doesn’t matter how well-known their brand is, how long they’ve been in business, or whatever else they bring to the table. Microsoft will impose themselves on every aspect of the new product line. See the little Windows logo-button? No logos required with (base-level) Android. Even the famously chauvinistic Apple puts nothing like that on iPhone. That button speaks volumes about MS’ approach.

I composed a longer response but the system ate it. :P

So, just go read this article at the Fortune magazine site on CNN. I won’t post the full link, because that would condemn my post to the ‘Moderator Review’ queue.:

        Microsoft’s 8 Other Mobile Partners
        (fortune .cnn .com)

        > [...] you don’t actually believe Nokia just signed up with Microsoft’s demands without any of their own?

Making demands ius one thing. getting real concessions from Microsoft is quite another.

Most likely, Nokia got the usual package:

      • thegreymatter

        You really are that naive??

Since when did Steve Jobs give app developers a breathing-air with regards to anything iOS related? Do you think people from Microsoft would be any different?

“OVI Maps and a few other Nokia services will be part of WP7, Microsoft needs these as their solutions suck”

Do you know of any official map solutions from your beloved WP7?? None. They use Google’s!

“The relationship between the two isn’t as black and white as Nokia = Hardware Microsoft = Software.”

Go check out an ACTUAL WP7…it is tight-lid and is running a different platform altogether, can you imagine people from Qt or Meego porting their stuff to a totally alien platform? It will be euthanasia, man!

      • hackman

you’re absolutely right.. Wp7 is a developing OS still.. android and iOS were far worse when they were introduced.. symbian WAS a great OS.. it’s time to move on.. rather than dying with it..
as far as ppl complaining abt the apps availibility in windows market place.. it’s got the fastest growing market place ever.. 20000 apps in just 6 months.. whereas android and iOS are far slow..
what people should do here is stop being pessimistic and stop nagging abt nokia not doing the right thing or so..
they should just wait for the products to come.. give them a year more.. and then they might actually whoop some android asses..

  • http://www.adonisdemon.com Abul

I’m actually excited about this and of something Nokia is doing, it’s been 2 years since they’ve got me interested.

Nokia + WP7 shows much more promise than Symbian + MeeGo ever could.

This is the smallest gamble Nokia could have taken to join the modern mobile scene.

All Nokia fans need to start moving forward, Symbian and MeeGo is dead, look forward to using one of the best looking OS’ out there today. Yes it lacks many many features, but it’s a platform which is being ironed out from the bottom up.

    • Anonymous

Thank you for ur positive comment! Cheers!

    • Npierr01

This is just stupid. WP7 lacks the basic functionality that Symbian has. That is simply a fact. It is in no way modern, unless you consider modern to mean flashy and lacking in substance. I bet you love Paris Hilton too.
Now Microsoft has failed with its mobile software previously, and now we’re expected to believe that they know how to do mobile software properly? It’s absolutely idiotic. WP7 has had no traction since it came out, what’s going to change that? Sorry, but i can’t ignore reality.

      • http://www.adonisdemon.com Abul

What has Paris Hilton got to do with this? LOL.

You’re making no sense in anything you’re saying.

I know you guys are in love with Symbian and would make love to it in a heartbeat, but seriously get over it.

Not sure if you’ve ever actually played with a WP7 device for longer than 2 minutes, but as I said above; yes it does lack many many things we take for granted in Symbian, but it’s a “new” OS being built, not a finished product.

What Nokia is investing is potential whilst using little resources themselves.

Symbian has carried Nokia long long way, but it;s an old dying donkey now. Get off it and ride a car.

        • http://twitter.com/filiprino Filiprino

The problem is that Windows is not a car. It’s a motorcycle.

        • Npierr01

Can you just answer in what way is WP7 a car and Symbian a donkey? WP7 lacks much of the functionality of Symbian, yet you claim it’s superior. What do you base this on? Is it just that it’s “prettier” or flashier? Is it just style over substance? If you can point out the ways in which the core functionality of WP7 is better than Symbian I’d be happy to listen.

        • http://www.adonisdemon.com Abul

It’s pretty simple; Nokia has been trying to convert Symbian from a non touch to a touch OS for over 3 years now. With limited success.

The ageing UI, lack of apps, dev support and profitability it makes not only a business sense to move to an OS built from scratch and one that has one of the cleanest UIs in the market with already a pretty good selection of apps was not a hard choice to make.

It may be hard for most of the Nokia / Symbian faithful to take right now, but what would you rather see, Nokia trying and likely failing with Symbian / MeeGo strategy and fading into non existence or partnering up with with one of the biggest companies in the world and opening up even bigger avenues of profitability.

Functionality wise yes, Symbian owns WP7 all day long. Experience wise it falls flat on it’s face.

        • Anonymous

Acrually Nokia was making profit of the symbian phones, Ovi stor (just that store) has 30,000 apps while MS has 4,000 also asked any other OEM that made WP7 device how much profit they got, thye paid royalties to MS, and of the 2 million phones sold with WP7 a big bunch is still on shelves, see the browser market share.

Nokia was loogins market share not sales, not profit, it was in fact growing in sales, and Q4 stats by Canalys were wrong acording to even google.

        • Npierr01

If WP7′s UI is so amazing why has it sold less than 2 million phones with 10+ models from various manufacturers in more time than it has taken for Nokia to have sold 5 million Symbian^3 phones with only 2 models?
You seem to be ignoring the fact that Microsoft has been a consistent failure in the mobile phone business, the Kin fiasco being the latest example, as well as the extremely poor WP7 sales. Just because Microsoft is one of the biggest companies in the world doesn’t mean that some of their products don’t suck bigtime.
But keep trying, eventually you’ll convince yourself this makes sense inspite of the facts. Good luck.

        • http://twitter.com/a_cross Allen Cross

          @jorgearturo:

          > asked any other OEM that made WP7 device how much profit they got, thye paid royalties to MS, and of the 2 million phones sold with WP7 a big bunch is still on shelves, see the browser market share.

Yes — WP7 is off to a remarkably slow start. Perhaps unfairly, lots of US tech writers are saying it’s already dead.

          > Nokia was loogins market share not sales, not profit, [...]

Well, yes and no. I think the worrying statistic is that their per-phone profit has dropped, yet again. That’s partially due to losing 25% of their market-share in the smartphone sector, which in turn is tied to their being almost totally absent from the North American market. Like it or not, my country (USA) represents approx. 25% of the world’s smartphone sales, especially top-end phones.

          > [...] it was in fact growing in sales, [...]

Well, again, yes and no. For a couple years, Nokia have played fast and loose with their reported sales figures. Two examples: (1) In 2010, Nokia shipped millions of phones at steep discount, in an effort to placate sellers who were complaining about by the long-delayed N8 and other production problems; (2) Starting in fiscal 2009, Nokia has tried to stretch the definition of ‘smart phone’ so as to bolster their figures in that sector. Analysts have not bought this tactic.

        • Rex

Symbian’s sole drawback is its outdated UI. They were anyway going to phase it out and not stick to it forever, and despite its so called drawbacks it was outselling every other phone OS around the globe.
The current move makes it look as though Nokia was on the verge of going bankrupt because of Symbian and are looking at MS to save them, which is far from the case,.
Symbian + Qt + Meego had a healthy and growing ecosystem, now in one stroke that has been killed. What developer is going to stick with any of these now?
In one stroke, they’ve alienated their core user base (which still numbers in the growing millions btw) and the few developers that were there, and also their own employees.
What magic do you expect WP7 to work for Nokia in the coming years?

        • http://twitter.com/a_cross Allen Cross

          > yes [WP7] does lack many many things we take for granted in Symbian, but it’s a “new” OS being built, not a finished product.

          Fair enough.

But the big question is this: Does Nokia have the luxury of taking enough time to produce a winning NokiaSoft phone? By the end of 2011, Apple will have introduced iPhone5, iPad2, a new iPod Touch, plus maybe a new model: iPhone Nano. Android OS will have advanced by at least two versions, with (conservatively) 25 or 30 new phone models and at least a dozen new tablets. And I’m not even going to guess how many cool new applications will be available, for each of the leading smartphone platforms.

        • UB

Symbian is a donkey, while WP7 is a car with no engine.

        • thegreymatter

“but it’s a “new” OS being built, not a finished product.” Duh.. if you are really in love with your WP7, you should’ve known they recently faced a technical problem from a Samsung device which if you will think about it should have not been there having its release delayed already by 5-6 months.

So how will it be any different if Nokia will adopt the same OS?

Shame. you didn’t get the Paris Hilton part…loved that one.

Smallest gamble? To announce that all their current hardware just expired, that no more apps are to be expected and MS will take over the OS, the app store sales and mobile ads? They went from 30% market share and profitability to not having anything to sell for the next year or so? A smaller gamble would have been to announce they will be introducing a line of WP7 devices to coexist with Symbian. That Qt would enable apps to migrate on to WP7. And to make these announcements not a year in advance to being able to ship WP7 devices, but something closer to a week. But I’m not saying anything here that hasn’t already been said I guess, so let’s just wait and see. Hopefully Nokia can pull a rabbit out of the hat on Sunday and also present the MS-Nokia deal in a better light.

    • I-was-a-nokia-fan

Yeahh, you are right, Symbian and MeeGo is dead, and WP7 will never be alive. A marriage of two dead technologies, what a great deal Nokia made!

    Actually they do :O
Unless MeeGo is messed up by all this.

    • Viipottaja

Sorry to tell you, but Meego is on the way out too. I would expect one tablet to do a David Letterman “will it float test”, probably with a weight tied to its leg.

  • Jwforson

Once people have slept over the disappointment they will realise this was Nokia’s only option. Nokia cant release a minor software update in PR 1.1 on time how the hell where they going to release MeeGo and make it competitive.

    • Viipottaja

AT&T (YES, AT&T) management was making very positive remarks on the Meego devices and UI they were shown by Nokia. That’s right. AT&T. That’s how.

  • Vitpolo

The phones look pretty, but what prevented Nokia to create something like this with MeeGo?

Nothing, and the people who have seen the qwertyless Meego proto say its the best looking phone they have ever seen. Oh and the specs were top notch too.

oh joy another slate fone just what the professionals using nokias need…

  • Ivan4879

Nope ! what they did is WRONG they are gonna lay off alot of people symbian 3 was just 6 months they could’ve fix it and kept more peolple employed. What’s gonna happen to the QT and the Meego department i’m very upset. what do u think Mark did you like Flops move ?

  • Viipottaja

The Windows key in the middle makes me want to vomit my guts out.

Now thats a good technical informed opinion

  • hmmmm

finally….WP7 touchscreen is way better than symbian. The last nokia phone i bought was N97 back in Dec 2009. Can’t wait!!!

  • Anonymous

Those are like Barbie phones, pretty but useless, MS WP7 is just a bad copy of Apple’s iOS, MSWP7 cant multitask, cant send files using bluetooth, cant transfer files using just a cable (need the pc suite), so what ther are s40 prettyphones too, cheaper and can do the same stuff.

This is obviously emergency plan, after the stocks dive, Elop said it, deep 15% drop in usa and 14% drop in finlad, the marketing department took some concepts (probably for meego) and just copy and paste the front of MS.

Elop is stupid enough to actually kill an entire ecosystem without the replacement ready, so killing developers, sales and condemning nokia to dead, in 2012 Nokia will nothing more or different than ZTE, actually they will wish to be ZTE in order to regain some market lost in this really bad choice.

MS is the eternal looser in the mobile business, at its best moment they had 12% market share, now they have 2%, and was the choice of Elop, what is worse is that all parterns of MS have enden bankrupt or near bankrupcy, Sendo, Palm, Sony Ericsson, Motorola and now LG is facing red numbers.

  • waR

i’m actually looking forward to this joint venture. Nothing beats the quality of a Nokia…and my HTC HD7 is slowly falling apart. I can’t wait to see what their flagship model will look like.

Real multi-tasking, cut/paste, built-in SIP Voip Support, full bluetooth stack, USB-on-the-Go, HDMI out, Sync-ML, IMAP IDLE? Not there? Then no, the pretty colours don’t change my mind at all.

  • Zouz

The thing is…. Neither symbian, nor WP7!!! how about android?? I was hoping that nokia adopts android, but now after WP7!! I prefer going back to symbian. and who will buy a symbian device anymore knowing that it is dead end!! Is someone expecting app developpers to care about symbian anymore?! Dont think so :(
    RIP symbian, RIP nokia

  • Humptydoo

happy for the switch to wp7; as i’ve said before, even when i came over to nokia from windows6.1, symbian was far behind (I just got tired of using stylii), but this is a good thing. but please, don’t build sammi’s. stick with the great nokia designs and build.

  • Humptydoo

if all of us were as smart as we make ourselves out to be, we’d all be on android, which does things that symbian hasn’t even imagined yet. but, otoh, nokia was smart not to become just another phone manufacturer filling android in their boxes. with wp7, there’s lots of room for development. anything that makes my phone more like my pc in my pocket works for me. i don’t wanna carry around an ipad, nor a netbook, nor a nook. I want it in my convergence device in my pocket. and, as i’ve also said many times, the next frontier is voice. I wanna be able to dictate into my phone, not type or swype. so, nokia, here’s your charge, develop a wp7 phone with the functionality of my pc and all controlled by voice.

  • guest

I would definitely but the black one. At last a decent Windows Phone mobile. Was going to buy the Samsung Focus, but this looks even better.
    Keep on waiting……maybe a year?

  • Humptydoo

pls, nokia, don’t build sammi’s. and nokia gotta hook up with a carrier, even if they gotta make cdma versions for verizon, etc. don’t they make cdma for china?

  • Peter

Sorry, but if nokia is putting windows in their phones I will stop buying their phones. I have used nokia-phones since NMT, but windows in my phone is something I will NOT accept. Sorry Nokia.

  • Ron3kl

    >Do these photos change your mind a little?

    No, not in the slightest.

By the way, there is nothing in what Nokia and Microsoft have released that says Nokia will be using WP7. They have very carefully said “Windows Phone” – so perhaps that means the rumoured 7.5.
