Nokia Explains Strategy for MeeGo and Symbian After Microsoft Partnership

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop did not explain what Nokia’s doing with MeeGo and Symbian in his open letter, but they were outlined in a following press release. Symbian becomes a franchise platform, while MeeGo becomes an open-source, mobile operating system project. Details after the jump.

Nokia Adopts Windows Phone as Its Primary Smartphone Strategy

“Nokia will adopt Windows Phone as its primary smartphone strategy,” wrote Stephen Elop in an open letter published at Nokia Conversations on Friday. Specific details of the deal are still being worked out. No mention of MeeGo or Symbian in the letter. There’s a quick video announcement of the partnership. Take a look.

Let’s take a little break from the Windows and Nokia rumors. We just received a few screenshots of the Symbian PR2.0 update. You get to preview the new browser and portrait keyboard that were missing in PR1.1. Sorry, but no word yet on when to expect it. I hope it’s sooner than later.

Reuters: Nokia Cancels First MeeGo Device, Showing Second MeeGo Device Instead

It looks like we have another unannounced device that got canned by Nokia. Citing two industry sources, Reuters learned that Nokia has ended development of its first MeeGo smartphone. Instead, they might show the second planned MeeGo device, even if unfinished, at Capital Markets Day or Mobile World Congress.

Nokia Strategy and Financial Briefing, Feb 11th 10AM GMT

If you’re interested to hear about Nokia’s Strategy and Financial Briefing, there will be a webcast live and on demand at nokia.com/press. It is scheduled for 10AM GMT (5AM EST). CEO Stephen Elop tweeted a couple of weeks ago that Nokia needs to change faster. We’ll hear more about it on the 11th.

Engadget published an internal memo by Nokia CEO Stephen Elop. They have multiple sources claiming it is indeed real. UPDATE: Nokia E6-00 Leaked Photos

Engadget got a couple of photos of what their source describes as the Nokia E6. It looks like the Nokia E73, E72, and E71. It’s not exactly what I pictured in my head, but the infamous mobile insider Eldar Murtazin tweeted it is the real deal. Take a look and sound off what you think.

Nokia to Refresh the Ovi Store – Here’s a Sneak Peek

Nokia is working on a new web version of the Ovi Store. It’s not live yet, but you can access certain pages from your desktop. I don’t think they’re done because certain features from the current Ovi Store are missing. For example, the user reviews and related content tabs aren’t there yet. The redesign looks good. Check out some of the screenshots.

Nokia Launches #NokiaConnects for Social Media Week

As you probably know, Nokia is the headline sponsor of Social Media Week. It is a bi-annual network of conferences about social media starting February 7th. The press conference on Thursday revealed the #NokiaConnects application that Nokia launched for Social Media Week. The web app is now live.

Nokia to Replace Several Executive Board Members

According to German business weekly Wirtschaftswoche, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop has ordered headhunters to look for top people to replace several executive board members. Elop is supposedly planning a radical restructuring of top management. We might hear more about this on February 11th at Capital Markets Day in London.
