Nokia’s Ovi Maps to Replace Bing Maps, Insider Says

An insider told Search Engine Land that Nokia’s Ovi Maps will “replace everything that Microsoft had developed over the past several years in terms of the Bing Maps infrastructure.” Microsoft’s role would be on the Bing Maps UI. This is shocking to Search Engine Land because they say Microsoft has already invested hundreds of millions of dollars (if not billions) in their mapping technology.

After reading the article, I asked some of my friends if they use Bing Maps. I wasn’t surprised to find out none of them use it. They like Google Maps. Is that a concern for Nokia?

Bing maps already uses Nokia’s NAVTEQ data and routing, so it’s not too much of a change. You’ll probably find people on a PC won’t use Bing Maps because everyone already uses Google as a search engine, but if it’s the default mapping app on Windows Phone then it’s going to be used no matter what.
