Bookmarklets are bookmarks in the browser designed to add one-click functionality to a web page. On our desktops, we save bookmarklets by dragging a links to to our browser’s toolbar. It’s different on mobile devices. I checked the Nokia N900, Nexus One, iPhone, and the Nokia N97 mini and noticed only the N900 can quickly save bookmarklets.

A couple of bookmarklets I use a lot are the Bit.ly sidebar and
Wordpress Press This. Here are 100 more that you might find helpful.

To save a bookmarklet on the Nokia N900, long-press on the link and add as a bookmark. You can access it later by clicking on the bookmarks button on the lower left corner. That’s it!

It’s not that easy on other devices. Saving bookmarklets on the iPhone requires syncing with a computer. There are other ways, but again, it’s not as intuitive as the N900. I also tried saving a bookmarklet on the Nexus One and the Nokia N97 mini, but failed.

Facebook (FB) announced on Wednesday that they’ve made FB chat available everywhere using the Jabber technology, an open messaging protocol supported by most instant messaging (IM) software. Guess what? The Nokia N900 supported Jabber out of the box since it was launched! I’ll show you how you can add FB chat on the N900 without the need to install additional app or plugin.

Step 1. On your Nokia N900, go to Settings – VoIP and IM accounts and click the New button. Select Jabber as the service.

Step 2. Find your Facebook Chat username on this link by clicking on one of the clients. You just need to know the Jabber ID and your Facebook password.

Step 3. Type your username and password from step 2, then sign in. You don’t need to change anything else.

That’s it! You can now chat with your Facebook friends directly from your Contacts book without having to download apps or plugins. You can change your availability status directly from the status area on the Nokia N900.

I previously shared an easy guide to install .deb files on the Nokia N900 using Red Pill mode, but that functionality has been removed on the latest firmware updates. Another method to install .deb files requires using X Terminal, but it could be overwhelming at first. I think I understand it better now, so here’s a guide to help you install those files on the Nokia N900, too.

Before you continue, use common sense and only install .deb files from trusted sources! Some developers provide these type of files for users to test their applications. In this guide, coder Chris Burris allowed me to use his upcoming FourSquare app dubbed BarrioSquare as an example. Check out the BarrioSquare group page to join the testing.

The Download

Let me first show you how I downloaded the .deb files. I simply clicked on the download link from a webpage and the browser asked where I want to save it to. I chose the default, which says, Location: Nokia N900.

The Installation

1. First, install rootsh to enable root access.

2. Open X Terminal on the Nokia N900, type sudo gainroot and press enter. This will not work if you skipped the first step.

3. I find it easier to go into the same folder where the .deb is located. The cd TheNameOfDirectoryHere command changes your location to that directory. Therefore, if you downloaded the file in the default folder, type cd MyDocs

4. Check if the .deb file is in your current folder by typing ls. This command lists the contents of your current folder. You know you’re in the right folder if you see the .deb file on the list.

5. Now that we’re in the same folder as the .deb file, we can install it using the command dpkg -i TheNameOfFileHere.deb

6. That’s it! That’s how you install .deb files on the Nokia N900. You should also note that some .deb files (like BarrioSquare) will not install without other files preinstalled. These are called dependencies. Read developers’ full instructions to see whether dependencies are needed.

I noticed a bug report about portrait mode on the Nokia N900’s web browser. Wait… there’s portrait view now? It seems this hidden feature can be enabled on the web browser by pressing Ctrl-Shift-o. This works on the latest Nokia N900 firmware 2.2009.51-1 and seems to be an undocumented feature. I made a video to show you how it looks.

Pressing the three buttons toggle it on and off, maintaining the setting even after rebooting the Nokia N900. The screen automatically rotates when the keyboard is closed and the device is held upright. It goes back to landscape view if keyboard is slid open. The on-screen keyboard also appears in landscape view only.

Despite some of the drawbacks I mentioned above, it’s cool that Nokia left this “hidden feature” to be found by its users. I believe this option was hidden because it is simply not finished yet.

I actually prefer to use browser in landscape view, but some websites appear better in portrait mode. For example, my favorite Nokia N900 Twitter web app, Hahlo.com, looks great in that view.

One major thing missing from the Nokia N900 is an official Google Maps application. Fortunately, the mobile version of their website looks like a good solution until Google decides to release a native app for Maemo and the Nokia N900. I’ve created a video to show you how it looks.

Simply go to google.com/maps/m on the Nokia N900’s web browser. The browser have the Hover and Manipulation modes that are handy on the Google maps mobile website. You can use these modes in order to move and zoom on the map.

The Google Maps mobile website allows users to search, view traffic, satellite view, and even call places. This solution isn’t perfect and a proper application should make the experience better. The web browser does not know your current location, so you have to double tap many times to zoom in from world view to to street. Have a Nokia N900? Go check it out and let us know what you think.

Update: Thanks to a tip by @dsawhney, installing the maemo-geolocation plugin from Application manager enables the web browser to find my location for Google Maps! Awesome!

Thanks to Philip Langdale, we can now tether our Nokia N900 with other devices over bluetooth. He has released the Bluetooth Dial-Up-Networking (DUN) package that many people have been waiting for. Since I use a Mac, I’ll share my guide on using the Nokia N900’s internet connection with Mac OS X Snow Leopard.

First, install Bluetooth Dial-Up Networking. This is available in Application manager under the Extras repository or simply install it from this page. Reboot the N900 after installation.

Open Network Preferences on the Mac and click on the ‘plus’ sign to add a service. Select Bluetooth DUN as the interface, name it whatever you like and click the create button.

Select the service you just added and click Advanced..

Under the Modem tab, select Nokia as vendor, and GPRS as the Model. Type in your provider’s access point network and hit OK then Apply. I use T-mobile in the USA so my APN is internet2.voicestream.com. The Nokia N900 does not show your APN so you might have to call your provider or insert the SIM card into another phone that tells you the APN (S60 phones show it in connection settings).

Make sure Bluetooth is ON with the Nokia N900 first. Click on “Set up Bluetooth Device” and follow the directions to pair the Mac with the Nokia N900.

Mac will ask you to confirm if the number displayed is also showing up on the Nokia N900. Click Pair on the Nokia N900 and Continue on the Mac.

If the pairing is successful, you will see this screen. I didn’t have to fill out username or password. Just click Continue.

That’s it! To use the internet connection from your Nokia N900 on the Mac, just click on the phone icon on the top right corner and then Connect.

The Ovi Store for Nokia N900 is still not open to the public, but there’s a URL trick to let you see what’s inside using your desktop browser. As expected, there aren’t many apps available and you will not be able to download anything yet.

It will set your device to N900. We cant download the apps yet but we can view them.

I hope to see more apps, games, and themes when the Ovi Store opens for the Nokia N900. I’m not sure when that will be, but one developer said they thought it was supposed to happen weeks ago.

It’s no secret that I absolutely love Pixelpipe on my Nokia devices. It lets me upload my photos, videos, and even files to existing multiple services like Flickr, Facebook, Twitpic, yFrog, etc. I just learned they’re releasing plugins for the Nokia N900 to make it easier for new users that just want to upload to a single service. Check it out.

Sharing a photo to Twitter from Nokia N900

The first round of plugins sent to Nokia for the upcoming Ovi store include:

• Blogger
• FTP
• Photobucket
• Pixelpipe (update)
• TinyPic
• Twitter
• yfrog
• YouTube

Download

These plugins are expected to be available in the Ovi store when it finally launches for the Nokia N900, but the adventurous users can install them now. Brett Butterfield, the CEO of Pixelpipe, was cool enough to let the Nokia blog’s readers have a preview.

Instructions

1. Download and unzip this file.
2. Watch my guide how to install the .deb files on Nokia N900
3. Setup the account under Settings – Sharing accounts.

Why?

Since I’ve been using Pixelpipe for a while now, I wanted to know the idea behind creating individual plugins. Here’s what Brett has to say.

Discoverability: As new users go to the application catalog they’ll typically search on the service name they’re looking to add to their device. Most application catalogs can’t index all of our service names so a user would have to know that Pixelpipe could upload to yfrog for example. We’ve released a number of single service applications on Android already and I have to admit that several are more popular then the Pixelpipe versions of the same application just because of discoverability.

Ease of use: From the optimized signup flow to the ease of just selecting the icon you want at the time of upload these plug-ins are just simple to use. While an experienced Pixelpipe user would use routing tags to send to a specific service that feature is just too complicated for many users, they can now select the service that they want from an icon and know that the media will only upload to the service of their choice.

Simple to create: The logic that isolates the plug-in to a specific service happens on the Pixelpipe servers. What this means is that we can create a service specific plug-in by simply changing the OAuth key, graphics and any text strings. When the plug-in connects to our servers with a service specific key we automatically tune the sign-up flow and isolate uploads to just the desired service. At this point we can create and test a Maemo plug-in in under an hour so expect more to come if they’re popular!

I think it’s great that it’ll be easier for new Nokia N900 users to find and use these single service plugins. However, I would recommend using the main Pixelpipe plugin that supports multiple services once they are familiar with how it works.

This is not a recommended method of installing applications on the Nokia N900, but follow this guide if you receive an app as a .deb file from a trusted developer. This is a fast and easy way to install from a file using the red pill mode on the Nokia N900.

Use common sense and only install .deb files from people you trust. Check out the wiki from the Maemo Community to read more about Red Pill mode.

Nokia Multimedia Transfer (NMT) for Mac was updated on Thursday to version 1.4.2. It adds support for the Maemo device, Nokia N900. If you are unfamiliar with the application, NMT enables you to transfer pictures, videos, music, and files between your Nokia mobile device and Mac.

You can download it Multimedia Transfer at nokia.com/mac, but the website still shows the older version. Once installed, click on ’search for update’ under the settings for the newer version.

Nokia Multimedia Transfer lets you automatically sync with iTunes or iPhoto the moment you connect to your computer. You can initiate transfer by either clicking the start transfer button, or if you have enabled “Start transfers automatically when device is connected” next time you connect your device.

If you’re waiting too long for a GPS lock, try the location server supl.google.com instead. When I was using the Nokia N900 in Amsterdam, I was able to geotag photos in seconds. I became very suspicious when I came back in the US and it took much longer. I shrugged it off until a tip from the Maemo community suggested to replace Nokia’s location server with Google. I’m happy to report that I now get a GPS lock in seconds!

I’m not sure why this is the case, but others in the US have confirmed changing the location server from supl.nokia.com to supl.google.com makes the GPS faster to find their location. I also got better results after replacing the server on the Nokia N97 mini as well.

Assisted GPS (A-GPS) uses the device’s data connection to talk to these location servers to help triangulate positioning data even where GPS signal is poor, like when the device is surrounded by buildings or is indoors. You can change the server under your device settings. On the Nokia N900, it is found on Settings – Location.

Is it possible that Nokia’s location server is broken in the US or am I being delusional? Try Google’s and let me know if you see improvements.

Every web browser I use, pressing the back button loads the previous page. The one on the Nokia N900 is different by showing my recent history instead. That means click, wait for list to load, then another click to go back to the previous page. I don’t like it. If you feel the same way, a workaround is to press the backspace on the keyboard to load the previous page bypassing the history list.

I don’t think the history list should appear when pressing the back button on the Nokia N900 web browser. I recommend making it available as another option like a long-press in Safari, or a drop-down in Firefox. Do you agree?

Power Twitter is a browser add-on that adds inline YouTube, Flickr, TwitPic, all sorts of playable/viewable media to the twitter.com interface. It also features link expansion to preview the link’s page title. Power Twitter makes the official Twitter page better, so read on to find out how to install on the Nokia N900.

If you don’t have a Nokia N900 yet, you can still see how Power Twitter works by installing it on Firefox on your computer.

Steps

1. Install Greasemonkey-webaddon. It’s currently in the Extras-Devel repository.

2. Restart the Nokia N900. I’m not sure if it’s necessary, but I had to restart my device in order to install the script on the next step.

3. Install Power Twitter script for Greasemonkey from powertwitter.me.

4. Open twitter.com with the Nokia N900’s browser. There should now be a link to the Power Twitter settings on the lower right corner. Login with your Twitter account and check/uncheck options based on your preference.

When I was at Maemo Summit, I kept hearing the terms ‘Maemo Extras’ and ‘Extras Testing.’ As a new user to the OS, I was totally clueless! I did some digging and found out these were repositories or places where applications from the community can be found. I’ll share with you what I learned and how you can use it when you get the Nokia N900.

Extras

An easy way to browse and install applications from ‘Extras’ is by going to downloads.maemo.org from the Nokia N900’s web browser. You can install the apps by simply clicking on the green arrows.

You should also enable the repository in Application manager so that the N900 receives update notifications for the apps. The Extras repository is supposed to be pre-configured in the Nokia N900 but is disabled by default. To enable:

Go into the Application manager.
Tap the menu -> Application catalogs…
Tap Maemo Extras.
Uncheck Disabled.

If it’s not there, you can manually add it:

Application manager –> Application catalogs –> New
Catalog name: Maemo Extras
Web address: http://repository.maemo.org/extras/
Distribution: fremantle
Components: free non-free

After you enabled the repository, browse through the download section of the Application manager.

Extras-testing

If you feel adventurous, Extras-testing holds applications waiting to be tested and passed to the Extras repository mentioned above. Warning: Applications here might break and cause trouble to your device! Regular users are encouraged to stay away!

You can check out the apps here with comments and ratings from testers. To install the apps, activate the repository in application manager:

Extras-devel

I shouldn’t even be mentioning Extras-devel because it could really mess up your device. Warning: The software hosted in extras-devel is most likely not ready for end users. Developers upload the newest version of their software to extras-devel for an ‘automatic and human Quality Assurance process’ before it gets passed to Extras-testing.

Haze plugin adds more services to IM on Nokia N900

I was hesitant at first, but I decided to install a plugin from this repository after hearing about account-plugin-haze. It lets me add my AIM
account on the built-in Conversations instant messaging app on the N900. It also supports GaduGadu, ICQ, MSN, QQ, Sametime, and Yahoo, but I don’t use those services. It seems to be working fine so far and I hope to see it in the Extras repository soon!

To activate:

Application manager –> Application catalogs –> New
Catalog name: Maemo Extras-devel
Web address: http://repository.maemo.org/extras-devel/

I know it’s not out yet, but you can prepare by creating your own loopable wallpapers for the Nokia N900. Sometimes visuals are better than words, so I created this video to show you how to do it.

• Get equirectangular photos
• Crop it to 3200 x 480
• Slice it into 4 images of 800×480 images

I use Youtube a lot and I just discovered users can automatically notify their Twitter followers when new videos are uploaded. This is possible thanks to Youtube’s AutoShare feature. It’s great because it also simplifies the process of sharing videos on Twitter directly from your phone. I’ll show you how.

Step 1. Activate Autoshare on Youtube. You can find it in Accounts – Sharing.

Step 2. Upload videos from your Nokia phone via Pixelpipe. Here’s more information about this step if you haven’t heard of it yet.

Step 3. That’s it! After the video is uploaded and processed, your Twitter account will automatically announce it for you. I only have one complaint. I wish Youtube didn’t add “I uploaded a Youtube video,” on the tweets. It limits the length of our titles.

This is a tip for the USA readers currently under AT&T contract, but want to enjoy 3G data on the Nokia N900. Since the N900 does not support AT&T’s 3G frequency, you have to use a T-mobile SIM card. Tmo’s Flexpay Monthly plan doesn’t require a long-term contract, so you can just get one at their stores without signing your soul away for the next two years.

Step 1. Go to a Tmobile store and tell them you want a Flexpay monthly account. Tell them you already have a phone to use it with but you don’t have it with you at the moment. Check the reason at the end of instructions.

Step 2. They’ll ask which plan you want. Since you already have AT&T, you probably don’t need minutes on the T-mobile account. The cheapest option is $29.99 for 300 Whenever minutes with unlimited weekends.

Step 3. Tell them you’ll add the extra services (like the data plan) later on.

Step 4. Sign the papers, then leave the store with your new Tmo SIM card.

Step 5. Insert the SIM card into the Nokia N900 and register/login at my.t-mobile.com with a computer or laptop. Tmobile will not recognize the Nokia N900, so change the phone in your dashboard to one of the Nokia phones. The default for me was a Tmobile G1. I changed it to the Nokia 5310.

Step 6. Go to Manage Services and add data access for your account. It is $9.99 per month for unlimited web.

Step 7. That’s it. Now you have a Tmobile SIM to use 3G on the Nokia N900. After taxes, it adds up to about $50 a month. The good news is that you’ll be able to end the plan anytime you want. This is a temporary fix until a Nokia Maemo device compatible with AT&T’s 3G frequency comes out.

Step 1a. If you tell them that you have it with you, they will scan the N900 for the IMEI number. Since it is not in their system, they will force you to pay the $24.99 data plan instead of $9.99.

Switch or Second SIM?

I don’t think you’ll enjoy using the N900 with an EDGE connection. 3G or Wifi is a must, but it will cost another $50 per month for current AT&T customers. Will you switch or get a second SIM for the Nokia N900?

I was spoiled by using the 3G connection with the Nokia N900 in Europe that using Edge here in the US is unacceptable. T-mobile is the only provider in the US able to provide 3G data for this device, so I got a SIM card to show you how fast the network is in New York City.

I first heard about Hermes on Twitter and knew that it will be popular. It is still under development, but it basically grabs your Facebook and Twitter friends’ info like photos and birthdays, then sync it with your Nokia N900’s contacts. I asked the developer, Andrew Flegg, to get in front of camera to talk about the app. Check it out.

If you want to try it out, it can be found in the Extras-testing repository. I don’t suggest installing it yet because of this WARNING. I recommend waiting once it is officially available in Maemo Downloads.

It’s been about 48 hours since I got my loaner pre-production Nokia N900 and I find it really hard to put it down. I’ll try to show you as much as I can so you can preview the mobile computer before your preorder arrives. In this video, you’ll see that the Nokia N900 has an autofocus for photographs AND videos.

You can focus on a subject before recording by pressing the camera button halfway. It will not refocus while recording. This is great for doing macro videos!

Lately, I’ve been using Posterous to post photos and non-Nokia related articles on my personal site. I’m really liking how it works with the Nokia N97 and the Nokia Messaging app. Combined together, they make a great mobile blogging tool.

In short, Posterous lets you write blog posts by simply writing an email to post@posterous.com. You can set it up to autopost your entries to your other existing online presence like Flickr, Facebook, Twitter, and even another blog.

Multiple Photos

My favorite feature is how Posterous handles multiple photos. Just attach several photos in the email, and they will automatically create an embedded photo gallery within the post. When it comes to Twitter, it’s great to automatically share photos you’ve taken, but will your followers like it if you tweeted 10 related photos in a row? Probably not. Posterous auto-tweets one time with a link showing the gallery of the multiple photos. I think this is the best way to share multiple photos on Twitter! Here’s a sample tweet for this post.

Autoposting

Another great feature of Posterous is autoposting to other services like Flickr, Facebook, Twitter, or other blogs. Posterous takes it to another level by enabling you to autopost to only some of those services with each post. You can select which of those services to post by simply changing the email address.

Integration with Nokia Messaging

Since Posterous works via email, I like how it integrates with the Nokia Messaging app. On the gallery, you can select the photos to upload, then click on the Nokia Messaging option. If you don’t want photos on the post, just write an email without any attachments.

Finishing Thoughts

I suggest trying out Posterous if you haven’t yet. You won’t regret it. It definitely makes our Nokia phones even more powerful. This is perfect for mobile blogging as well as instant sharing of photos. I love it on the Nokia N97 because of the Qwerty keypad for quick typing. I can’t wait to try it out on the Nokia N900.

Before I install any apps on a new Nokia phone, I have a routine of changing certain settings. Here is a list of 5 settings I change. Let me know yours.

Change clock type to digital. I have a hard time reading the default analog clock display by Nokia. (Clock setting)

Turn off key tones. I don’t want to hear a beep every time I press a button. (Profile setting)

Turn off Warning Tones. Turning the warning tones off usually eliminates the camera shutter sound. However, I think some phones sold in certain regions do not allow users to turn it off. If that’s the case, I select the least noticeable tone. (Profile setting)

Auto Time Update. During the setup wizard, I don’t manually enter the correct date and time. Turning on auto time update makes sure you have the right time. (Clock setting)

Hide Security Warnings. I haven’t noticed any negative effects of this setting yet, but it prevents those annoying pop up messages before accessing certain sites like Gmail. I’m an impatient person. (Browser setting)

I’ve tipped readers to get their wallpapers at Interfacelift, but here’s a video showing how I do it directly from the Nokia N97. The same should apply to other Symbian S60 phones, but you need to learn which wallpaper size works best. For comparison, I’ve also squeezed in how it looks on the iPhone

A difference with the iPhone is that you can long-press on an image to save. That method saves the user a few presses compared to the Nokia N97.

The Nokia E72 isn’t out yet, but I’ve got to play with a pre-production model during the Mobile Geeks of NY meetup. It is the update to the E71, whose camera I absolutely hate. The camera app was the first thing I checked on the E72 and I was surprised to see a new autofocus system. Check out the video.

To autofocus with the Nokia E72, you rest your finger on top of the Optical Navi key. The green bracket shows up on the screen to confirm locked focus, then you press fully to take the photo. This is different from the predecessor where you had to press the letter ‘T’ to focus on a subject.

The Nokia E72 was not running final software, but the new autofocus worked pretty well. I wasn’t able to grab the photos from the E72 to see the quality, but there are plenty of available photo samples on Flickr.

We found early prototype Nokia N900 sample photos on Flickr before by using the code “007 001.” We don’t need that anymore because the latest firmware now includes the real camera name in the Exif data. All we need to do now is the Flickr search trick to find the latest Nokia N900 sample photos.

I bumped into Brett Butterfield, CEO and founder of Pixelpipe during the first day of Nokia World. I told him I love the service and have been using it frequently with my Nokia phones. I also told him that I had my hands on the Nokia N900 and hope that Pixelpipe works on it. I was in luck. He asked permission from Nokia then got the green light to demo it for The Nokia Blog!

Pixelpipe rocks because it is the best way to share photos, videos, and more from the phone to the web. I use it frequently to upload photos and videos to Flickr, Twitter, and Facebook directly from the camera on Nokia phones. There are more than 100 places to choose from! I asked a Nokia spokesperson at Nokia World to show me the new firmware 2.0 on the Nokia N97. It will feature usability enhancement, additional widgets, updated Facebook app, increased free internal memory, as well as stability improvements. The firmware is going to be available in Software Update this October.

I think kinetic scrolling is a nice addition. It will be available anywhere a list applies like the music player, photos, and the applications menu. I did not get a chance to look at the updated Facebook app yet, but I’ll try to get a demo soon.

The increase in available internal space will make many users happy who prefer to install apps there.

It looks like Nokia listened to its users with this update and I can’t wait to install it on my Nokia N97.

I’m not really big on themes, but I like to change my wallpapers frequently. Here’s a quick tip: head over to Interfacelift for awesome wallpapers on your Nokia phones. You might even like it for your desktop too.

Several resolution options on interfacelift

I like that Interfacelift provides several resolution sizes. They currently don’t have a 640×360 resolution for the widescreen devices like the Nokia 5800 and Nokia N97, so I just download the 720p option then resize it., but the 800×480 works fine thanks to the suggestion by reader, Nick Morgowicz, in the comments below.

Boingo released a patch that will let users remove their access point from the Destinations folder. You may already know that Boingo lets you access wifi hotspots around the world at an affordable price. One problem with the application is that it adds access points in the Destination folder that can’t be removed if you no longer want to use the service. Here’s how to fix it.

The Nokia N97 comes pre-loaded with three months of free Boingo Wi-Fi. If you were curious what the app does and decided to open it, Boingo automatically adds an Access Point to your destinations. If you choose not to activate the service, the app or access point shouldn’t affect your other connections. However, there are people (like me) who rather not have it there if I don’t use it.

• From the main menu on your device, select Settings>Connectivity>Destinations>Internet and confirm that Boingo is listed as an access point.
• Download the Boingo patch software to your device.
• As soon as the installation is complete, the patch software automatically launches and removes the Boingo IAP.
• You will see a confirmation message that the Boingo IAP is being removed.
• To check that the Boingo IAP has been removed, navigate again to the Destinations menu.

I tried this out myself and can confirm that it works.
