Nokia Oro Hits the FCC, Heading to the US

Heard of the limited 18-carat gold-plated Nokia Oro? Nokia announced it just a couple of days ago. Premium devices such as the Oro are popular in the Middle East and Russia, but it looks like the US will be selling them as well. The FCC documents for Nokia Oro were published on Friday.

Nokia Becomes CNN’s Mapping Provider

CNN and Nokia announced a partnership today in which CNN’s news content will be supported by Nokia’s mapping services. The collaboration debuted with the use of Nokia’s 3D Maps across CNN in its recent coverage of the British royal wedding. There is also a CNN app at the Ovi Store.

Confirmed: First Nokia Windows Phone to Run Mango

Demo: Near Field Communication (NFC) Concept for MeeGo

Dustin Kassman from ICS showed me a proof of concept of a Near Field Communication (NFC) app they created on the MeeGo platform. The application is running on a MeeGo tablet connected to the Nokia C7 as the writer for RFID tags. Dustin then showed me how you can use the NFC reader on the Nokia C7 to retrieve the information from the tags. Take a look.

Vidya Ravella from doubleTwist showed me how their AirSync software allows users to sync music with a Mac or PC with a MeeGo device using their home Wi-Fi network. There’s no need for a cable. Take a look at the video.

Nokia Windows Phones to Use ST-Ericsson U8500 Dual Core Chips

Carlo Bozotti, the Chief Executive of European semiconductor maker STMicroelectronics, told Forbes that ST-Ericsson will be one of two chip suppliers for Nokia’s upcoming Windows Phones. The other supplier is Qualcomm. The first ST-Ericsson chipset that will appear in a Nokia Windows Phone is the U8500. More details of the chipset after the jump.

Nokia hasn’t officially announced the Nokia N9 yet, but PocketNow scooped up the teaser video already. At quick glance, it looks a lot like Symbian. The video description says the N9 is a Meego-powered QWERTY slider. Check it out.

Ovi to be Rebranded as Nokia Starting July 2011

You will no longer see the word “Ovi” by the end of 2012. The official Nokia Conversations posted that the company made the decision to change their service branding from Ovi to nokia to centralize their services identity under one brand. The transition begins July of this year. No big changes are expected for the services experiences since this is just a name-change.
