Bookmarklets are bookmarks in the browser designed to add one-click functionality to a web page. On our desktops, we save bookmarklets by dragging a links to to our browser’s toolbar. It’s different on mobile devices. I checked the Nokia N900, Nexus One, iPhone, and the Nokia N97 mini and noticed only the N900 can quickly save bookmarklets.

A couple of bookmarklets I use a lot are the Bit.ly sidebar and
Wordpress Press This. Here are 100 more that you might find helpful.

To save a bookmarklet on the Nokia N900, long-press on the link and add as a bookmark. You can access it later by clicking on the bookmarks button on the lower left corner. That’s it!

It’s not that easy on other devices. Saving bookmarklets on the iPhone requires syncing with a computer. There are other ways, but again, it’s not as intuitive as the N900. I also tried saving a bookmarklet on the Nexus One and the Nokia N97 mini, but failed.

WOMWorld/Nokia put up 3 tickets for grabs over the weekend for an all-expenses-paid trip to SXSW in Austin, Texas. Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition Firmware Updated to v40 – Feels Incomplete

The Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition got a firmware update to software version 40.2.005, but it feels incomplete. Kinetic scrolling is not applied everywhere like in the Nokia N97 mini and the original N97. The new Ovi maps with free navigation isn’t included within the new firmware either, so you have another download to take care of if you haven’t installed it previously.

Heres a quick video of the firmware on the Nokia 5800 Nav edition. Some areas in the interface have kinetic scrolling like the phone settings. It could be confusing how to scroll through lists.

The Nokia 5800 Nav is just like the regular version I reviewed previously, with the addition of a car mount and car charger. It initially came out with a lifetime license for navigation, but the newer version of Ovi Maps gave all supported models free navigation. You can watch the unboxing to see the contents.

I haven’t found any changelogs yet, but I’ll assume the new firmware also fixed some bugs and improved stability.

App Review: 2G/3G Mode Selection Applet for Nokia N900

2G/3G Mode Selection Applet works exactly as it sounds. Installing this applet adds 3 buttons to the Nokia N900’s status menu that lets the user change between 2G only, 3G only, or Dual (3G priority) connection. This is a really quick way to change modes without going through other settings. I made a video to show you how it looks.

This is great for those who want to save battery by staying on 2G only connection, or prevent the phone from looking for an unsupported 3G connection. I personally keep the option on 3G only, because I don’t want my device to even bother looking for a 2G connection. This applet is developed by Faheem Pervez, the same person responsible for the awesome applet, Simple Brightness.

2G/3G Mode Selection Applet was available in Extras-Testing at the time of publishing this post, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it makes it to Maemo Extras by the time you read this. Confused? Read the guide to Maemo Extras first.

Video: How to Enable The Hidden Portrait Mode On Nokia N900 Web Browser

I noticed a bug report about portrait mode on the Nokia N900’s web browser. Wait… there’s portrait view now? It seems this hidden feature can be enabled on the web browser by pressing Ctrl-Shift-o. This works on the latest Nokia N900 firmware 2.2009.51-1 and seems to be an undocumented feature. I made a video to show you how it looks.

Pressing the three buttons toggle it on and off, maintaining the setting even after rebooting the Nokia N900. The screen automatically rotates when the keyboard is closed and the device is held upright. It goes back to landscape view if keyboard is slid open. The on-screen keyboard also appears in landscape view only.

Despite some of the drawbacks I mentioned above, it’s cool that Nokia left this “hidden feature” to be found by its users. I believe this option was hidden because it is simply not finished yet.

I actually prefer to use browser in landscape view, but some websites appear better in portrait mode. For example, my favorite Nokia N900 Twitter web app, Hahlo.com, looks great in that view.

Video: Google Maps Mobile on Nokia N900 Web Browser

One major thing missing from the Nokia N900 is an official Google Maps application. Fortunately, the mobile version of their website looks like a good solution until Google decides to release a native app for Maemo and the Nokia N900. I’ve created a video to show you how it looks.

Simply go to google.com/maps/m on the Nokia N900’s web browser. The browser have the Hover and Manipulation modes that are handy on the Google maps mobile website. You can use these modes in order to move and zoom on the map.

The Google Maps mobile website allows users to search, view traffic, satellite view, and even call places. This solution isn’t perfect and a proper application should make the experience better. ~~The web browser does not know your current location, so you have to double tap many times to zoom in from world view to to street.~~ Have a Nokia N900? Update: Thanks to a tip by @dsawhney, installing the maemo-geolocation plugin from Application manager enables the web browser to find my location for Google Maps! Awesome!

App: Camkeyd for Nokia N900 – Shortcut to Dashboard Using Camera Button

Camkeyd is nifty tool developed by Heikki Holstila that lets Nokia N900 users access the dashboard quickly by half-pressing the camera button. It is disabled when the lens cover is open so it doesn’t mess with camera functionality. Read on for the video demo.

Camkeyd is useful with fullscreen apps like the web browser on the Nokia N900. Without this tool, the usual way to see current open apps from fullscreen is by clicking expand on the lower right corner and then the dashboard icon on the top left. Camkeyd makes it even quicker with just one click. If you already have the keyboard open, pressing Ctl+Backspace provides the same result without installing any other apps.

Camkeyd is currently available in the Extras Development repository. Read the Maemo Extras guide to find out how to download apps from this repo. Make sure not to skip the information about the risks involved by installing apps from there.

This is not a recommended method of installing applications on the Nokia N900, but follow this guide if you receive an app as a .deb file from a trusted developer. This is a fast and easy way to install from a file using the red pill mode on the Nokia N900.

Use common sense and only install .deb files from people you trust. Check out the wiki from the Maemo Community to read more about Red Pill mode.

Hands on the Nokia Booklet 3G for AT&T USA

On Monday I met up with a few Nokia folks for some time with the Nokia Booklet 3G for AT&T in the US. We bowled afterwards too, but I won’t tell you how bad I scored. Instead, I’ll give you an overview of the Booklet, thanks to Nokia’s Joe Gallo who didn’t mind getting in front of camera for our blog readers.

The first time I had my hands on the Booklet 3G was at Nokia World, but we didn’t get the specific pricing for the US market back then. As seen on the video, it will be available in time for the holidays, priced at $299 with contract ($599 without) on AT&T’s 3G network. You can find it exclusively at Best Buy.

Mr. Gallo explained that there’s a dedicated AT&T plan for the Nokia Booklet 3G. That means we can’t take our existing AT&T SIM card from our current phones and pop it into the Booklet for data.

The Booklet 3G looks great. It reminds me of Apple’s Macbooks whose designs I absolutely love. The reported battery life also makes it very appealing to just put in the bag without the power adapter. One thing I’m concerned about is the performance. I was shown an early model, but I noticed some of the apps took time to load. I’ll have my hands on a retail version shortly so I can perform more accurate tests and provide a better opinion.

Nokia N900 Preview of Qik

You probably already know that Qik lets you stream video live from your phone. In case you need a reminder, I met the cofounder, Bhaskar Roy, at the Nokia N900 NYC meetup and asked him to give The Nokia Blog viewers a demo. Take a look.

As a reminder, this is just a preview of what’s to come. This article is based on Qik version 0.0.36 running on a pre-production Nokia N900. Features may be added or changed when the Nokia N900 arrives in stores.

Qik on the Nokia N900 has a very simplistic interface. There’s a prominent green button that lets you stream videos immediately. There’s also quick access to set a title and and privacy.

The application menu on top gives you more settings to play with. Here, you can choose whether to stream videos with max quality or minimum delay. You can also go to your Qik profile from this menu or sign up if you’re new.

Clicking anywhere else on the screen toggles full-screen mode just like the main camera application on the Nokia N900. I noticed there’s currently no way for me to use video autofocus. I hope this feature gets added in an update.

Results

I found streaming to work really well on wifi. The delay is very minimal. My main complaint is that the videos aren’t really viewable ‘live’ when using the a carrier’s internet connection. Viewers will see a choppy video until the file is fully uploaded. For best results, use wifi. What’s also great about Qik is that it will automatically resume uploading if it was previously interrupted or disconnected.

Qik is the fastest way to share your videos online. You can choose to automatically upload your videos to Facebook or send out a Tweet when streaming live. There are more services to automatically forward the Qik streams. I recommend installing it if your phone is supported and definitely recommend it on the Nokia N900.

Review: Simple Brightness Applet for Nokia N900

I’ve been checking the Maemo Downloads site and found this cool little applet called Simple Brightness for the Nokia N900. It adds an option to the top control panel that lets you quickly adjust the screen brightness. I made a video to show you how it looks.

The applet works exactly as it is described. It is developed by Faheem Pervez and can be installed directly from the Nokia N900 by going to Maemo Downloads.

I like this a lot because it enhances the already awesome control panel on the Nokia N900. Even without this applet, users have out-of-the-box quick access to the access points, bluetooth activation, messaging status, clock, and profile.

I wonder what other options developers can add. What would you want?

Video: Nokia N900 on Tmobile USA 3G Speed Test

I was spoiled by using the 3G connection with the Nokia N900 in Europe that using Edge here in the US is unacceptable. T-mobile is the only provider in the US able to provide 3G data for this device, so I got a SIM card to show you how fast the network is in New York City.

T-mobile USA was consistent after several tries. Downloads are usually 2.25Mb/s and uploads around 0.35Mb/s. Run your own speed test with your provider and paste your results in the comments below.

I first heard about Hermes on Twitter and knew that it will be popular. It is still under development, but it basically grabs your Facebook and Twitter friends’ info like photos and birthdays, then sync it with your Nokia N900’s contacts. I asked the developer, Andrew Flegg, to get in front of camera to talk about the app. Check it out.

It’s been about 48 hours since I got my loaner pre-production Nokia N900 and I find it really hard to put it down. I’ll try to show you as much as I can so you can preview the mobile computer before your preorder arrives. In this video, you’ll see that the Nokia N900 has an autofocus for photographs AND videos.

You can focus on a subject before recording by pressing the camera button halfway. It will not refocus while recording. This is great for doing macro videos!

The same should apply to other Symbian S60 phones, but you need to learn which wallpaper size works best. For comparison, I’ve also squeezed in how it looks on the iPhone

A difference with the iPhone is that you can long-press on an image to save. That method saves the user a few presses compared to the Nokia N97.

It’s not a netbook, according to Nokia. It’s a mini-laptop! These packaging photos give you a preview of unboxing your own if you decide to spend the 575 Euro suggested price. It’s not exactly an unboxing because the accessories and manual weren’t in the box when I took the photos.

Preview How to: Autofocus on Nokia E72

The Nokia E72 isn’t out yet, but I’ve got to play with a pre-production model during the Mobile Geeks of NY meetup. It is the update to the E71, whose camera I absolutely hate. The camera app was the first thing I checked on the E72 and I was surprised to see a new autofocus system. Check out the video.

To autofocus with the Nokia E72, you rest your finger on top of the Optical Navi key. The green bracket shows up on the screen to confirm locked focus, then you press fully to take the photo. This is different from the predecessor where you had to press the letter ‘T’ to focus on a subject.

The Nokia E72 was not running final software, but the new autofocus worked pretty well. I wasn’t able to grab the photos from the E72 to see the quality, but there are plenty of available photo samples on Flickr.

Nokia N900 1-Minute Multitasking Demo

I asked Chanse Arrington, Product Manager of Multimedia at Nokia North America, to show me the Nokia N900 in about a minute and this is what we came up with. You can see how multitasking is done on this Maemo device. I have to say I’m loving the N900 more each time I see it!

Thoughts on Multitasking

The Nokia N900 appears to be made for multitasking. There’s no physical button on the front of the phone, but the area of the screen you’ll be touching a lot is the upper left corner. You press it once to show all open apps then press again to show the applications grid. Clicking outside the grid takes you back to your panoramic home screen.

Complaint & Suggestion. My complaint about multitasking on the Nokia N900 is that it tries to display the thumbnails of all open apps in one screen. If you have more than 3 apps open, the thumbnail preview of each app becomes very small.

I recommend Nokia to look into how the Palm Pre uses their “card view.” It shows one full thumbnail and two partial thumbnails that are movable like the panoramic home screen. Here’s how it looks.

Video: Opera Mini 5 on Nokia 5530 & Nokia N97

Opera Mini 5 Beta is out now and I installed it right away to give you a video demo. I use the Nokia 5530 and the Nokia N97 to show the browser’s new features like tabbed browsing, thumbnail bookmarks, and other usability improvements. Go watch it!

Opera Mini 5 can be downloaded by going to mini.opera.com/next from your mobile phone. It is compatible with most Nokia phones.

I think it is a great alternative to the default browser because it loads larger pages faster. However, it does not support flash, and there are still bugs to fix. For example, when I slide open the Nokia N97, the on-screen keyboard still shows up. It is still in beta, so I wouldn’t criticize it too much.

Nokia 5530 Hands-On Video and Initial Impressions

You’ve seen the Nokia 5530 hands-on photos. Now it’s time for the video! I had a couple of days with it, so I have initial impressions to share. I was surprised that navigating through the menus feel better on the 5530 versus the Nokia N97. Nokia uses kinetic scrolling on the 5530 already while N97 users currently have to wait for the update. A noticeable feature on the home screen is a scrollable favorite contacts list. It’s not as smooth as I like, but it works. Kinetic scrolling is a feature that a lot of people like and Nokia tries to implement it for the most part. Unfortunately, you still need to use the scroll bar in the application menu grid.

The browser is very similar to how I remember it on the Nokia 5800. It does not automatically go to full screen mode when opening web pages like the Nokia N97. I’ve also notice horizontal lines when scrolling through large pages. I’m not sure what that is about.

A stylus is accessible in the lower left edge of the Nokia 5530. I don’t like using it, but it is handy when trying to open the battery cover, microSD slot, or microUSB port.

The Nokia 5530 is pretty, small, light, and packs plenty of features. However, it doesn’t match the Nokia 5800 in hardware. The Nokia 5530 does not support 3G connectivity, but is priced about $50 lower than the 5800. Other things to consider is that Nokia is releasing similar touchscreen devices called the X6 and 5230 soon. Hmm… decisions…

Nokia N97 Mini Targeted For Fashionistas

Plenty of Nokia users are probably wondering why Nokia decided to make the Nokia N97 mini so soon after the release of the flagship Nokia N97. I asked this question to a spokesperson at Nokia World in Stuttgart, Germany and filmed the response. Check it out.

According to the Nokia rep, they are targeting a different audience for the Nokia N97 mini. These are people who are more fashion and design-centric than the regular Nokia N97 users. They want all the technical features, but also place importance on being able to flaunt the device.

As a Nokia N97 user, I’m a little confused at who they are targeting. I use the Nokia N97 and flaunt it to my friends whenever I get the chance. I also think it’s a beautiful device.

The Nokia N97 Mini and the regular Nokia N97 are pretty much similar except the missing lens cover, different keypad, smaller battery, 8GB built-in memory instead of 32GB. The size is smaller, but the difference isn’t very noticeable.

As a current Nokia N97 user, the Nokia N97 mini looks tempting because it looks like it can take night photos without the flash flooding. This problem is notorious on the regular Nokia N97.

Nokia Booklet 3G Video Overview

Nokia N900 Demo – Share Your Life with Pixelpipe

I bumped into Brett Butterfield, CEO and founder of Pixelpipe during the first day of Nokia World. I told him I love the service and have been using it frequently with my Nokia phones. I also told him that I had my hands on the Nokia N900 and hope that Pixelpipe works on it. I was in luck. He asked permission from Nokia then got the green light to demo it for The Nokia Blog!

Youtube App Updated to 2.2.17 – Centered Videos

Youtube just updated their S60 app to version 2.2.17. I’ve installed it on my Nokia N97 and made a video to show you how it looks. The main difference I noticed from the previous version is that the option bar on the right disappears to play videos in the middle. Unfortunately, there’s still no option for full-screen viewing.

Video: Nokia N97 v12 Firmware Update Overview

The Nokia N97 v12 firmware update became available on Tuesday so I made a video to show you how the phone now performs. I did not notice any new features, but it seems the Nokia N97 runs faster and is more stable. I show the web browser, Nokia Messaging, Facebook, and the photo gallery. Take a look.

One thing I realize is that even if the phone performs well, applications can mess up the overall experience. For example, this video shows you that viewing web pages is very good, but scrolling through emails on Nokia Messaging is frustratingly slow. It also shows you the annoying and unnecessary pop-up connection warnings when opening widget apps like Facebook.

Quick Hardware Evaluation

The iPhone’s size feels better in the pocket because it is thinner.
Physical keyboard on Nokia N97 makes the iPhone slower to type on. A lot of spelling errors as I type on iPhone.
Missing dedicated camera button on iPhone makes it harder to take action and self-portrait photos.

In upcoming posts and videos, I’ll compare specific usages with the software on the iPhone 3GS vs Nokia N97. It should be very interesting so stay tuned!
