<p>You can also <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4-jSJWT550" title="Nokia N900 and Bookmarklets">watch this video in HD</a> on Youtube. <a href="http://youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thenokiablog">Subscribe to the channel</a> to preview the latest videos before they get published on the blog.</p>
<p>To save a bookmarklet on the <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/go/nokia-n900/" title="">Nokia N900</a>, long-press on the link and add as a bookmark. You can access it later by clicking on the bookmarks button on the lower left corner. That&#8217;s it! </p>
<p>It&#8217;s not that easy on other devices. Saving bookmarklets on the iPhone requires syncing with a computer. There are other ways, but again, it&#8217;s not as intuitive as the N900. I also tried saving a bookmarklet on the Nexus One and the Nokia N97 mini, but failed.</p>

<p>The Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition got a firmware update to software version 40.2.005, but it feels incomplete. Kinetic scrolling is not applied everywhere like in the <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2009/12/01/nokia-n97-mini-review/" title="Nokia N97 Mini Review">Nokia N97 mini</a> and the original N97. The new <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2010/01/21/nokia-free-worldwide-walk-drive-navigation-ovi-maps/" title="Nokia Gives Away Free Worldwide Walk &amp; Drive Navigation For New Ovi Maps">Ovi maps with free navigation</a> isn&#8217;t included within the new firmware either, so you have another download to take care of if you haven&#8217;t installed it previously.<span id="more-4670"></span> </p>
<p>Heres a quick video of the firmware on the Nokia 5800 Nav edition. Some areas in the interface have kinetic scrolling like the phone settings. It could be confusing how to scroll through lists. </p>
<p><object width="448" height="277"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/_YDVIlo6YEw&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/_YDVIlo6YEw&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="448" height="277"></embed></object></p>
<p>You can also <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YDVIlo6YEw" title="YouTube<br />

<p>The Nokia 5800 Nav is just like the regular version I <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2009/03/19/nokia-5800-review-of-hardware/" title="Nokia 5800 Review of Hardware">reviewed</a> previously, with the addition of a car mount and car charger. It initially came out with a lifetime license for navigation, but the newer version of Ovi Maps gave <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2010/01/21/nokia-free-worldwide-walk-drive-navigation-ovi-maps/" title="Nokia Gives Away Free Worldwide Walk &amp; Drive Navigation For New Ovi Maps">all supported models free navigation</a>. You can watch the <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2010/01/22/nokia-5800-navigation-edition-unboxing-video/" title="Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition Unboxing Video">unboxing</a> to see the contents.</p>
<p>I haven&#8217;t found any changelogs yet, but I&#8217;ll assume the new firmware also fixed some bugs and improved stability.</p>

This is a really quick way to change modes without going through other settings. I made a video to show you how it looks. <span id="more-4280"></span></p>
<p><object width="448" height="277"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/bAKyWpINFKg&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/bAKyWpINFKg&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="448" height="277"></embed></object></p>

<p>This is great for those who want to save battery by staying on 2G only connection, or prevent the phone from looking for an unsupported 3G connection. I personally keep the option on 3G only, because I don&#8217;t want my device to even bother looking for a 2G connection. This applet is developed by <em>Faheem Pervez</em>, the same person responsible for the awesome applet, <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2009/10/25/nokia-n900review-simple-brightness-applet/" title="Review: Simple Brightness Applet for Nokia N900">Simple Brightness</a>. </p>
<p>2G/3G Mode Selection Applet was available in Extras-Testing at the time of publishing this post, but I wouldn&#8217;t be surprised if it makes it to Maemo Extras by the time you read this. Confused? Read the <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2009/10/27/maemo-extras-nokia-n900-applications/" title="A Guide to Maemo Extras for More Nokia N900 Applications">guide to Maemo Extras</a> first.</p>

<p>I noticed a <a href="https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7285">bug report</a> about portrait mode on the Nokia N900&#8217;s web browser. Wait&#8230; there&#8217;s portrait view now? It seems this hidden feature can be enabled on the web browser by pressing Ctrl-Shift-o. This works on the latest <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2009/11/13/nokia-n900-review/" title="Nokia N900 Review">Nokia N900</a> firmware <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2010/01/14/nokia-n900-firmware-updated-to-2-2009-51-1-changelog-included/" title="Nokia N900 Firmware Updated to 2.2009.51-1 &#8211; Changelog Included">2.2009.51-1</a> and seems to be an undocumented feature. I made a video to show you how it looks.<span id="more-4263"></span></p>
<p><object width="448" height="277"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/t77yb6xj_TQ&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/t77yb6xj_TQ&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="448" height="277"></embed></object></p>
<p>You can also <a title="Nokia N900 Web browser Portrait Mode" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t77yb6xj_TQ&#038;hd=1">watch this video in HD</a> on Youtube. <a href="http://youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thenokiablog">Subscribe to the channel</a> to preview the latest videos before they get published on the blog.</p>
<p>Pressing the three buttons toggle it on and off, maintaining the setting even after rebooting the Nokia N900. The screen automatically rotates when the keyboard is closed and the device is held upright. It goes back to landscape view if keyboard is slid open. The on-screen keyboard also appears in landscape view only. </p>
<p>Despite some of the drawbacks I mentioned above, it&#8217;s cool that Nokia left this &#8220;hidden feature&#8221; to be found by its users. I believe this option was hidden because it is simply not finished yet. </p>
<p>I actually prefer to use browser in landscape view, but some websites appear better in portrait mode. For example, my favorite <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/go/nokia-n900/" title="">Nokia N900</a> Twitter web app, <a href="http://hahlo.com/">Hahlo.com</a>, looks great in that view.</p>

<p>Simply go to <a href="http://www.google.com/maps/m" title="Google Maps">google.com/maps/m</a> on the Nokia N900&#8217;s web browser. The browser have the <a href="http://maemo.nokia.com/features/maemo-browser/gestures/" title="Maemo software | Nokia &rsaquo; Maemo Browser Interactive mode">Hover and Manipulation modes</a> that are handy on the Google maps mobile website. You can use these modes in order to move and zoom on the map.</p>
<p>The Google Maps mobile website allows users to search, view traffic, satellite view, and even call places. This solution isn&#8217;t perfect and a proper application should make the experience better.<del datetime="2010-01-13T05:24:36+00:00"> The web browser does not know your current location, so you have to double tap many times to zoom in from world view to to street.</del> Have a <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/go/nokia-n900/" title="">Nokia N900</a>? Go check it out and let us know what you think.</p>
<p><strong>Update: </strong>Thanks to a tip by <a href="http://twitter.com/dsawhney/statuses/7697663200">@dsawhney</a>, installing the <em>maemo-geolocation plugin</em> from Application manager enables the web browser to find my location for Google Maps! Awesome!</p>

<p>Camkeyd is useful with fullscreen apps like the web browser on the <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/go/nokia-n900/" title="">Nokia N900</a>. Without this tool, the usual way to see current open apps from fullscreen is by clicking expand on the lower right corner and then the dashboard icon on the top left. Camkeyd makes it even quicker with just one click. If you already have the keyboard open, pressing Ctl+Backspace provides the same result without installing any other apps.</p>
<p>Camkeyd is currently available in the Extras Development repository. Read the <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2009/10/27/maemo-extras-nokia-n900-applications/" title="A Guide to Maemo Extras for More Nokia N900 Applications">Maemo Extras guide</a> to find out how to download apps from this repo. Make sure not to skip the information about the risks involved by installing apps from there.</p>

<p>On Monday I met up with a few Nokia folks for some time with the Nokia Booklet 3G for AT&#038;T in the US. We bowled afterwards too, but I won&#8217;t tell you how bad I scored. Instead, I&#8217;ll give you an overview of the Booklet, thanks to Nokia&#8217;s Joe Gallo who didn&#8217;t mind getting in front of camera for our blog readers.<span id="more-3832"></span></p>
<p><object width="448" height="277"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/k4dATE0H6DA&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/k4dATE0H6DA&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="448" height="277"></embed></object></p>
<p>You can also <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4dATE0H6DA&amp;hd=1" title="Hands-on Nokia Booklet 3G for AT&amp;T US">watch this video in HD</a> on Youtube. <a href="http://youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thenokiablog">Subscribe to the channel</a> to preview the latest videos before they get published on the blog.</p>
<p>The first time I had my <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2009/09/02/nokia-booklet-3g-hands-on-first-impressions/" title="Nokia Booklet 3G Hands-On and First Impressions">hands on the Booklet 3G was at Nokia World</a>, but we didn&#8217;t get the specific pricing for the US market back then. As seen on the video, it will be available in time for the holidays, priced at $299 with contract ($599 without) on AT&#038;T&#8217;s 3G network. You can find it <a href="http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?_dyncharset=ISO-8859-1&amp;id=pcat17071&amp;type=page&amp;st=nokia_booklet_3g&amp;sc=Global&amp;cp=1&amp;nrp=15&amp;sp=&amp;qp=&amp;list=n&amp;iht=y&amp;usc=All+Categories&amp;ks=960&amp;p=[promotion%2C+synonymns]&amp;pu=defaultusr&amp;pt=1256446801">exclusively at Best Buy</a>.</p>
<p>Mr. Gallo explained that there&#8217;s a dedicated AT&#038;T plan for the Nokia Booklet 3G. That means we can&#8217;t take our existing AT&#038;T SIM card from our current phones and pop it into the Booklet for data.</p>
<p>The Booklet 3G looks great. It reminds me of Apple&#8217;s Macbooks whose designs I absolutely love. The reported battery life also makes it very appealing to just put in the bag without the power adapter. One thing I&#8217;m concerned about is the performance. I was shown an early model, but I noticed some of the apps took time to load. I&#8217;ll have my hands on a retail version shortly so I can perform more accurate tests and provide a better opinion.</p>

<p>You probably already know that <a href="http://qik.com/" title="Qik | Share Live Video From Your Mobile Phone">Qik</a> lets you stream video live from your phone. In case you need a reminder, I met the cofounder, Bhaskar Roy, at the <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2009/10/30/liveblogging-nyc-nokia-n900-meetup/" title="Liveblogging the NYC Nokia N900 Meetup Using a Nokia N900">Nokia N900 NYC meetup</a> and asked him to give The Nokia Blog viewers a demo. Take a look. <span id="more-3729"></span></p>
<p class="center"><object width="448" height="277"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Q6Xr9EjaAPk&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1&#038;"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Q6Xr9EjaAPk&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1&#038;" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="448" height="277"></embed></object></p>
<p>You can also <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6Xr9EjaAPk&amp;hd=1" title="YouTube - Nokia N900 app overview of Qik">watch this video in HD</a> on Youtube. <a href="http://youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thenokiablog">Subscribe to the channel</a> to preview the latest videos before they get published on the blog. </p>
<p>As a reminder, this is just a preview of what&#8217;s to come. This article is based on Qik version 0.0.36 running on a pre-production Nokia N900. Features may be added or changed when the <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2009/09/02/nokia-n900-hands-on-video/" title="">Nokia N900</a> arrives in stores.</p>
<p>Qik on the Nokia N900 has a very simplistic interface. There&#8217;s a prominent green button that lets you stream videos immediately. There&#8217;s also quick access to set a title and and privacy. </p>
<p>The application menu on top gives you more settings to play with. Here, you can choose whether to stream videos with max quality or minimum delay. You can also go to your Qik profile from this menu or sign up if you&#8217;re new.</p>
<p>Clicking anywhere else on the screen toggles full-screen mode just like the main camera application on the Nokia N900. I noticed there&#8217;s currently no way for me to use video autofocus. I hope this feature gets added in an update.</p>
<h4>Video Sample</h4>
<p class="center"><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=9,0,115,0" width="425" height="319" id="qikPlayer" align="middle"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="movie" value="http://qik.com/swfs/qikPlayer4.swf" /><param name="quality" value="high" /><param name="bgcolor" value="#333333" /><param name="FlashVars" value="rssURL=http://qik.com/video/7436cac6d7e24c06b4524846dcb23016.rss&#038;autoPlay=false" /><embed src="http://qik.com/swfs/qikPlayer4.swf" quality="high" bgcolor="#333333" width="425" height="319" name="qikPlayer" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="sameDomain" allowFullScreen="true" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" FlashVars="rssURL=http://qik.com/video/7436cac6d7e24c06b4524846dcb23016.rss&#038;autoPlay=false"></embed></object></p>
<h4>Results</h4>
<p>I found streaming to work really well on wifi. The delay is very minimal. My main complaint is that the videos aren&#8217;t really viewable &#8216;live&#8217; when using the a carrier&#8217;s internet connection. Viewers will see a choppy video until the file is fully uploaded. For best results, use wifi. What&#8217;s also great about Qik is that it will automatically resume uploading if it was previously interrupted or disconnected. </p>
<p class="center"><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/services.jpg" alt="Services" height="290" width="250"></p>
<p>Qik is the fastest way to share your videos online. You can choose to automatically upload your videos to Facebook or send out a <a href="http://twitter.com/thenokiablog" title="">Tweet</a> when streaming live. There are <a href="http://qik.com/profile/edit_networks" title="Qik | Share Live Video From Your Mobile Phone">more services</a> to automatically forward the Qik streams. I recommend installing it if your phone is supported and definitely recommend it on the <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/go/nokia-n900/" title="">Nokia N900</a>.</p>

<p>The applet works exactly as it is described. It is developed by Faheem Pervez and can be installed directly from the Nokia N900 by going to Maemo Downloads. </p>
<p><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2615/4042877544_24d0b1444d.jpg" width="448" alt="Screenshot-20091025-101149.png" /></p>
<p>I like this a lot because it enhances the already awesome control panel on the <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/go/nokia-n900/" title="">Nokia N900</a>. Even without this applet, users have out-of-the-box quick access to the access points, bluetooth activation, messaging status, clock, and profile. </p>
<p>I wonder what other options developers can add. What would you want?</p>

<p>If you want to try it out, it can be found in the Extras-testing repository. I recommend waiting once it is officially available in <a href="http://maemo.org/downloads/Maemo5/" title="maemo.org - Maemo 5">Maemo Downloads</a>.</p>

It&#8217;s not a netbook, according to Nokia. It&#8217;s a mini-laptop! These packaging photos give you a preview of unboxing your own if you decide to spend the 575 Euro suggested price. It&#8217;s not exactly an unboxing because the accessories and manual weren&#8217;t in the box when I took the photos.

<p>The <a href="http://europe.nokia.com/find-products/devices/nokia-e72" title="Nokia Europe - Nokia E72 - Products">Nokia E72</a> isn&#8217;t out yet, but I&#8217;ve got to play with a pre-production model during the <a href="http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=150222628054" title="Incompatible Browser | Facebook">Mobile Geeks of NY meetup</a>. It is the update to the E71, whose camera I absolutely hate. The camera app was the first thing I checked on the E72 and I was surprised to see a new autofocus system. Check out the video.<span id="more-3538"></span></p>
<p>To autofocus with the Nokia E72, you rest your finger on top of the Optical Navi key. The green bracket shows up on the screen to confirm locked focus, then you press fully to take the photo. This is different from the predecessor where you had to press the letter &#8216;T&#8217; to focus on a subject.</p>
<p class="center"><object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/vK9SmgMQPME&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1&#038;"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/vK9SmgMQPME&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1&#038;" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object></p>
<p>You can also <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vK9SmgMQPME" title="YouTube - Nokia e72 camera autofocus">watch this video in larger size</a> on Youtube or <a href="http://youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thenokiablog">subscribe to the channel</a> to preview videos before they get published on the blog.</p>
<p>The Nokia E72 was not running final software, but the new autofocus worked pretty well. I wasn&#8217;t able to grab the photos from the E72 to see the quality, but there are plenty of available <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2009/07/13/nokia-e72-photos-preview/" title="Nokia E72 Photos Preview">photo samples on Flickr</a>.</p>

<p>You can also <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXRnANqXRKI" title="YouTube - Nokia N900 Multitasking">watch this video in larger size</a> on Youtube. For a video walkthrough, you can also watch my longer <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2009/09/02/nokia-n900-hands-on-video/" title="The Nokia Blog&#8217;s Nokia N900 Hands-On Video">Nokia N900 hands-on video</a> from Nokia World.</p>
<h4>Thoughts on Multitasking</h4>
<p>The <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2009/09/02/nokia-n900-hands-on-photos/" title="Nokia N900 Hands-On Photos">Nokia N900</a> appears to be made for multitasking. There&#8217;s no physical button on the front of the phone, but the area of the screen you&#8217;ll be touching a lot is the upper left corner. You press it once to show all open apps then press again to show the applications grid. Clicking outside the grid takes you back to your panoramic home screen.</p>
<p><strong>Complaint &#038; Suggestion.</strong> My complaint about multitasking on the <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/go/nokia-n900/" title="">Nokia N900</a> is that it tries to display the thumbnails of all open apps in one screen. If you have more than 3 apps open, the thumbnail preview of each app becomes very small. </p>
<p>I recommend Nokia to look into how the Palm Pre uses their &#8220;card view.&#8221; It shows one full thumbnail and two partial thumbnails that are movable like the panoramic home screen. Here&#8217;s <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ry3996QjD0" title="YouTube - PALM PRE: CARD VIEW VIDEO TUTORIAL">how it looks</a>.</p>

<p>Opera Mini 5 can be downloaded by going to <a href="http://www.opera.com/mini/next/" title="Opera Mini | The most popular mobile phone browser in the world">mini.opera.com/next</a> from your mobile phone. It is compatible with most Nokia phones. </p>
<p>I think it is a great alternative to the default browser because it loads larger pages faster. However, it does not support flash, and there are still bugs to fix. For example, when I slide open the <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/go/nokia-n97/">Nokia N97</a>, the on-screen keyboard still shows up. It is still in beta, so I wouldn&#8217;t criticize it too much.</p>

Now it&#8217;s time for the video! I had a couple of days with it, so I have initial impressions to share. I was surprised that navigating through the menus feel better on the 5530 versus the Nokia N97. Nokia uses kinetic scrolling on the 5530 already while N97 users currently have to wait for the update. Check it out.<span id="more-3403"></span></p>
<p><object width= "448" height="277"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/KDrSW3wMgeI&#038;ap=%2526fmt%3D18&#038;autoplay=0&#038;rel=0&#038;fs=1&#038;color1=0x3a3a3a&#038;color2=0x999999&#038;border=0&#038;loop=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/KDrSW3wMgeI&#038;ap=%2526fmt%3D18&#038;autoplay=0&#038;rel=0&#038;fs=1&#038;color1=0x3a3a3a&#038;color2=0x999999&#038;border=0&#038;loop=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="448" height="277"></embed></object></p>
<p>You can also <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDrSW3wMgeI&amp;hd=1" title="YouTube - Nokia 5530 XpressMusic Hands-on Overview">watch this video in HD</a> on Youtube. I go over some of the physical aspects and briefly show how it runs. </p>
<p>A noticeable feature on the home screen is a scrollable favorite contacts list. It&#8217;s not as smooth as I like, but it works. Kinetic scrolling is a feature that a lot of people like and Nokia tries to implement it for the most part. Unfortunately, you still need to use the scroll bar in the application menu grid.</p>
<p>The browser is very similar to how I remember it on the <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2009/03/21/nokia-5800-review-web-browsing/" title="Nokia 5800 Review Of Web Browsing">Nokia 5800</a>. It does not automatically go to full screen mode when opening web pages like the Nokia N97. I&#8217;ve also notice horizontal lines when scrolling through large pages. I&#8217;m not sure what that is about.</p>
<p>A stylus is accessible in the lower left edge of the Nokia 5530. I don&#8217;t like using it, but it is handy when trying to open the battery cover, microSD slot, or microUSB port.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/go/nokia-5530/" title="NOKIA 5530 XpressMusic">Nokia 5530</a> is pretty, small, light, and packs plenty of features. However, it doesn&#8217;t match the <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/go/nokia-5800/" title="Nokia 5800 XpressMusic">Nokia 5800</a> in hardware. The Nokia 5530 does not support 3G connectivity, but is priced about $50 lower than the 5800. Other things to consider is that Nokia is releasing similar touchscreen devices called the X6 and 5230 soon. Hmm&#8230; decisions&#8230;</p>

Plenty of Nokia users are probably wondering why Nokia decided to make the Nokia N97 mini so soon after the release of the flagship Nokia N97. I asked this question to a spokesperson at Nokia World in Stuttgart, Germany and filmed the response. Check it out.

<p>Plenty of Nokia users are probably wondering why Nokia decided to make the <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2009/08/24/nokia-n97-mini-mobile-review/" title="Nokia N97 Mini Preview by Mobile Review">Nokia N97 mini</a> so soon after the release of the flagship <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2009/06/23/nokia-n97-review-hardware/" title="Nokia N97 Review of Hardware">Nokia N97</a>. I asked this question to a spokesperson at Nokia World in Stuttgart, Germany and filmed the response. Check it out.<span id="more-3346"></span></p>
<p><object width= "448" height="277"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/2qn--13TkhY&#038;ap=%2526fmt%3D18&#038;autoplay=0&#038;rel=0&#038;fs=1&#038;color1=0x3a3a3a&#038;color2=0x999999&#038;border=0&#038;loop=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/2qn--13TkhY&#038;ap=%2526fmt%3D18&#038;autoplay=0&#038;rel=0&#038;fs=1&#038;color1=0x3a3a3a&#038;color2=0x999999&#038;border=0&#038;loop=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="448" height="277"></embed></object></p>
<p>You can also <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qn--13TkhY&amp;hd=1" title="YouTube - Nokia N97 Mini">watch this video in HD</a> on Youtube.</p>
<p>According to the Nokia rep, they are targeting a different audience for the Nokia N97 mini. These are people who are more fashion and design-centric than the regular Nokia N97 users. They want all the technical features, but also place importance on being able to flaunt the device.</p>
<p>As a Nokia N97 user, I&#8217;m a little confused at who they are targeting. I use the Nokia N97 and flaunt it to my friends whenever I get the chance. I also think it&#8217;s a beautiful device.</p>
<p>The Nokia N97 Mini and the regular Nokia N97 are pretty much similar except the missing lens cover, different keypad, smaller battery, 8GB built-in memory instead of 32GB. The size is smaller, but the difference isn&#8217;t very noticeable.</p>
<p>As a current <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/go/nokia-n97-white/" title="Amazon.com: Nokia N97 Unlocked Phone with Touchscreen, 3G, 5 MP Camera, A-GPS, 32 GB, MicroSD Slot, and Integrated Ovi Applications--U.S. Version with Warranty (White): Cell Phones &amp; Service">Nokia N97</a> user, the Nokia N97 mini looks tempting because it looks like it can take night photos without the <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2009/07/27/nokia-n97-camera-flash-scratches/" title="Nokia N97 Camera Flash Useless After 45 Days">flash flooding</a>. This problem is notorious on the regular Nokia N97.</p>

<p>I bumped into Brett Butterfield, CEO and founder of <a href="http://pixelpipe.com/" title="Pixelpipe - Free your content, post, upload and share anywhere">Pixelpipe</a> during the first day of Nokia World. I told him I love the service and have been using it frequently with my Nokia phones. I also told him that I had my <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2009/09/02/nokia-n900-hands-on-video/" title="The Nokia Blog&#8217;s Nokia N900 Hands-On Video">hands on the Nokia N900</a> and hope that Pixelpipe works on it. I was in luck. He asked permission from Nokia then got the green light to demo it for The Nokia Blog! <span id="more-3332"></span> </p>
<p><object width= "448" height="277"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/fxD-MmSVohg&#038;ap=%2526fmt%3D18&#038;autoplay=0&#038;rel=0&#038;fs=1&#038;color1=0x3a3a3a&#038;color2=0x999999&#038;border=0&#038;loop=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/fxD-MmSVohg&#038;ap=%2526fmt%3D18&#038;autoplay=0&#038;rel=0&#038;fs=1&#038;color1=0x3a3a3a&#038;color2=0x999999&#038;border=0&#038;loop=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="448" height="277"></embed></object></p>
<p>You can also <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxD-MmSVohg&amp;hd=1" title="YouTube - Nokia N900 demo of Pixelpipe">watch this video in HD</a> on Youtube. I&#8217;m sorry about the glare in some parts of the video. My right eye was bothering me during the demo and could not clearly see the camera LCD preview. </p>
<p><a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2009/04/16/pixelpipe-on-nokia-share-online-rocks/" title="PixelPipe On Nokia Share Online Rocks!">Pixelpipe rocks</a> because it is the best way to share photos, videos, and more from the phone to the web. I use it frequently to upload photos and videos to Flickr, Twitter, and Facebook directly from the camera on Nokia phones. There are more than 100 places to choose from! If you haven&#8217;t heard of Pixelpipe yet, watch Brett explain it while using the much highly anticipated Nokia N900.</p>

<p>The <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2009/06/23/nokia-n97-review-hardware/" title="Nokia N97 Review of Hardware">Nokia N97</a> v12 firmware update became available on Tuesday so I made a video to show you how the phone now performs. I did not notice any new features, but it seems the Nokia N97 runs faster and is more stable. I show the web browser, Nokia Messaging, Facebook, and the photo gallery. Take a look.<span id="more-3052"></span></p>
<p>You can also <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8lbeKkCepU&amp;hd=1" title="YouTube - Nokia N97 v12 Firmware Overview">watch this video in HD</a> on YouTube.</p>
<p><object width= "448" height="277"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/a8lbeKkCepU&#038;ap=%2526fmt%3D18&#038;autoplay=0&#038;rel=0&#038;fs=1&#038;color1=0x3a3a3a&#038;color2=0x999999&#038;border=0&#038;loop=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/a8lbeKkCepU&#038;ap=%2526fmt%3D18&#038;autoplay=0&#038;rel=0&#038;fs=1&#038;color1=0x3a3a3a&#038;color2=0x999999&#038;border=0&#038;loop=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="448" height="277"></embed></object></p>
<p>One thing I realize is that even if the phone performs well, applications can mess up the overall experience. For example, this video shows you that viewing web pages is very good, but scrolling through emails on <a href="http://email.nokia.com/">Nokia Messaging</a> is frustratingly slow. It also shows you the annoying and unnecessary pop-up connection warnings when opening widget apps like Facebook.</p>

<h4>Quick Hardware Evaluation</h4>
<ul>
<li>The iPhone&#8217;s size feels better in the pocket because it is thinner.</li>
<li>Physical keyboard on Nokia N97 makes the iPhone slower to type on. A lot of spelling errors as I type on iPhone.</li>
<li>Missing dedicated camera button on iPhone makes it harder to take action and self-portrait photos.</li>
