Vlog: Qik Update .0898 Restores Videos

I just noticed that Qik got updated to version .0898 while setting it up on the Nokia E71. One change I see is that it uploads restored files. I don’t exactly know what restored files are, but I’m guessing they are videos that did not get fully uploaded and Qik tries to resume it. I made a video with the new version and made another video making the video. Got it?

Live Versus Edited

We have written about Qik a few times and there are several reasons why people like it. It’s not a hassle to get a video online. You click stream and the video goes up right away. Below are examples of two videos of the same event. One video was edited on my laptop before uploaded, while the Qik version is the real unedited version that was streamed and available right away. Notice the difference?

Nokia N85 Now Available

The Nokia N85 is now available! They have started showing up in legitimate eBay stores. Head over to our Nokia N85 price check page to see the lowest price for unlocked without contract. For comparison reason, the lowest price that showed up initially is $668 shipped. It will decrease when more stores get them in.

Make sure you take a look at the feedbacks of the seller if you are planning to pull the trigger. I personally don’t buy from anyone with less than 1000 feedbacks.

Nokia Launching a Phone in 3 Days

My phone knows everything about me. If you found my phone, would you look through it? That’s the question at a new viral campaign Nokia is running. It doesn’t look like a high-end phone and the name is not revealed until the October 13th, 8PM Eastern Time. I was also invited to a dinner by WOM World Nokia around the same time here in New York, so I’ll assume they are related.

The 30 second videos related to the campaign features 3 people. They even have facebook profiles you can check.

The dinner invitation I received describes an N-Gage campaign. I did not see anything about N-gage on the ads above though. I guess we’ll know what this is all about on the 13th. Anyone got a clue what phone it is?

Nokia N95 8GB LED Flash Great For Food Pictures

Sure, the Nokia N82 and the 6220 classic got the powerful xenon flash, but the weaker LED flash on phones like the N95 8GB are actually much better in certain situations. For example, I like using it to take pictures of what I eat. Today, Sheila and I took pictures at the famous Grimaldi’s Pizzeria under the Brooklyn Bridge.

With xenon flash up close to the plate, the picture would actually be overexposed or washed out. The LED flash on the Nokia N95 8GB was just right.

Vlog Demo: Listening To Text Messages on Nokia 6220 Classic

New Nokia phones can let us listen to our text messages without installing anything. I just found this very cool feature built-in already on the Nokia 6220 Classic that should also work on the new phones running S60 3rd edition FP2 like the Nokia N96 or Nokia N85. I don’t have those phones yet, so I can’t confirm. Take a look at the video.

On this demo, I asked Sheila to finish the video for me. She’s not a big Nokia fan, but agreed to do it anyway. Thanks, sweetie! Make sure to see the outtakes at the end.

As you can see, it’s a nice feature, but the computer’s voice might be hard to understand. A lot of my friends also type in sms shortcuts that the phone might not understand. I also think it is a nifty feature that can make better drivers if they listen instead of read their messages.

Tip: Alarm Shortcut in Nokia Clock

I recently found out a faster way to setting up an alarm in the built-in Clock on my Nokia N95 8GB. It should also work with other S60 devices. While the clock app is open, just start pressing a number corresponding for the alarm and a form pops up automatically. I can’t believe I just discovered this!

This shortcut saves you 2 keypresses so that you don’t need to press “options” and “new quick alarm.” Did you know about this from the beginning, or just found out about it recently like me?

I gave the Nokia BH-604 an F for failure on design, but Nokia just opened up the Music Almighty Headset Competition that let’s you create your dream headset. They might be even crazy enough to build it if other people like your design. Take a look at mine and start creating your own!

The competition ends 31st of Dec 2008. 10 designs that receive the most stars will be forwarded to the judging panel where they’ll pick 5 winners. The winning designs will be produced into fully functional headsets and showcased at flagship stores all over the world. It will be returned to the winners for them to keep.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Initial Thoughts, Pictures, and Video Links

Yesterday was a big day for Nokia, announcing the 5800 XpressMusic. I compiled a list of links where you can absorb all the important info you need about the touchscreen device. I was actually surprised with the Nokia 5800, because it offers more than what I expected.

Nokia 5800 Specifications - This is the official specifications list for the Nokia 5800. This caught me off guard because this device will have 3 megapixel Carl Zeiss optics camera that records video at 30fps with 640×480 and 640×352 (widescreen) video. And yeah, it’s touchscreen too.

Replica Vertu TI Ascent Pictures and Pricetag

Thanks to a tip from a reader about a forum selling replica Vertu Ascent TI’s, I was surprised to see the appearance, packaging, and especially the price tag! Instead of a 4-figure price, we get three. Since the phone OS on the Vertu doesn’t really offer much compared to S60 on the Nseries or Eseries, it probably works similarly to the genuine phone.

Obviously, I cannot link to the forum where this is sold, but the seller is reputable to that community (how ironic), selling several other replica items. The asking price is $369 compared to the price of the real thing at about $7000! An important feature that doesn’t work on this replica is GPRS, so no access to internet. Phone calls work fine.

How To: Sync Google Calendar, Apple iCal, and Nokia Phone Calendar

I found something really useful other Mac users might love. I have been able to sync my iCal, Google calendar, and phone’s calendar using CalDav and GooSync. Read on to find out how.

As an introduction, this solution is all possible thanks to CalDAV support in Google Calendar and Goosync support on S60 phones.

CalDAV

With CalDAV support in Google Calendar, you’ll be able to view and edit your Google Calendar events directly in Apple’s iCal. Any changes you make in iCal will automatically appear in Google Calendar the next time you sign in (and vice versa). If you use iCal while offline, changes you make will be saved and updated in Google Calendar when you get back online.

Setup iCal. First you’ll need to enable Google Calendar in Apple’s iCal. Google wrote a detailed how-to so I don’t need to write it here.

GooSync

Goosync synchronizes the phone’s calendar with Google Calendar without the need of installing an application. I can enter plans on my Nokia N95 8GB’s built in calendar application and then sync it to Google Calendar. I signed up for the free account since all I need is to sync my calendar. You can opt to get the premium type for more features if you wish.

Setup GooSync. Before you can synchronise your Google Calendar and Contacts you must first ensure your GooSync account is correctly authenticated with your Google account. Follow the directions to authenticate which only takes about 3 mouse clicks.

Finished

That’s it you are done. The end result is iCal, Google Calendar and the phone calendar being synced together. You can now edit your calendar on your phone, Mac, or any computer connected to the internet.

The only problem is it requires manual sync on the phone. You need to initiate the sync. I haven’t found anything right now that allows us to automatically sync our phone with Google calendar.

New and Improved Forums at The Nokia Blog

Today, we have upgraded the forums with a new URL and integrated user login. Let’s call it “Forums at The Nokia Blog.” I don’t want the forum to interfere with the insightful comments and discussions that happen within our blog posts, but rather have it be its own community for discussing anything and everything Nokia, and then some.

I opened the forums a couple months ago, but it was annoying that the blog and forum had separate user login forcing people to login twice. It took several days of installations and editing PHP and HTML, but I think it’s ready for action. If you find anything broken, just let us know on the forums.

Unfortunately, the upgrade also means deleting previous posts and usernames. It’s not a big deal though since registration only takes 10 seconds. Please welcome the new forums and participate with the new community.

Nokia 5800 Tube Press Pic Looks Good

I’m impressed with the leaked press pic of the Nokia 5800 Tube. It actually looks good! Sleek, shiny, chrome trims with three black buttons add up to a great appearance. I’m hoping the interface is just as pretty.

Review: Solar Cell Phone Charger by Daylight Savings

I was really glad to bring the solar cell phone charger with me to Berlin because it saved me from low battery. It was provided by Daylight Savings for review. Bottom line, forget about the other chargers out there. This is the only one you need.

The main feature of the Daylight Savings solar cell phone charger is that you can just place it by your window or car seat on and let it charge up, assuming there’s some sunlight outside. On a day where you know you’ll be taking lots of videos and pictures, bring the charger with you just in case. This is also really helpful during camping getaways where power outlets are hard to come by.

Don’t worry if there’s no sunlight. You can also juice up the charger with a USB cable connected to a laptop or computer.

You can also charge it with a USB cable.

The charger comes with different adapters fitting many popular brands including Nokia phones. The wire that comes with the package is pretty short. On my trip to Berlin, I actually used the Nokia CA-100 USB charger instead with the solar charger which is a little longer.

The solar phone charger has a 1200mAh battery inside. This means I can fully charge up a Nokia N95 8GB once until the solar charger’s battery becomes empty.

Charging the Nokia N82

The Daylight Savings solar phone charger is not a necessity, but it’s one of those things that one day you’ll thank yourself for having one. For only $20 (+$4.99 for shipping), I think it’s a great deal. A popular competitor is the Proporta charger which costs more than double and does not have solar charging. Do I really need to ask which one is the better buy?

Closer Look At Nokia E72 - Better Camera and Smaller Spacebar

It looks like maybe the Nokia E72 have a better camera and the spacebar was reduced to make way for additional buttons compared to the Nokia E71. Let’s analyze the leaked Nokia E72 and E75 video again. It looks just like the E71 but thicker and available in bright red color. What does the extra thickness bring in addition to the thinner Nokia E71?

In the photo below, you can see a clear border around the camera with inscriptions right below it. It is implying to me that the camera could be one of the the Nokia E72’s highlighted features. Wishful thinking tells me “Carl Zeiss” is written somewhere there.

Also take a closer look the spacebar on the Nokia E72. Instead of taking up the space of 4 buttons like on the Nokia E71, it is only taking up 2 buttons. It looks like Nokia created separate buttons for the “Chr” and “Ctrl” buttons on the right side and separated the buttons for the forward slash “/” and at sign “@” on the left side. Those are great adjustments in my opinion, but I’m not sure if other people will like a smaller spacebar.

Let’s compare it to the current Nokia E71’s keyboard below. Certainly a difference in the layout between the two devices.

Introducing a better camera for the Nokia E72 will make me a big fan. I enjoy using the Qwerty keypad on the Nokia E71, but not so impressed with the camera. The smaller spacebar will probably take time to get used to, but I like the adjustments made to separate some buttons. I think it’ll make for a better email and typing experience.

Next Nokia Internet Tablet - Some Specs Revealed

At one of the workshops today in Maemo Summit, a slideshow showed a few specs of the next internet tablet after the Nokia N810. As you can see, half of the data was crossed out. I snapped a photo just in time so you can see the slide yourself.

From the slide, it shows that the next internet tablet includes 3G HSPA, a TI OMAP3 processor, OpenGL graphics accelerator, and Maemo 5 OS.

Vlog: Bicycles and Berlin Before Maemo Summit

I have some free time before the Maemo Summit gets started so I made a quick video in front of the Reichstag building with my thoughts on Berlin and bicycles. A lot of people here use them and I noticed one major difference from New York City. The bike lanes are mostly on sidewalks… not the roads!

I’ve been exploring around Berlin Mitte, seeing plenty of historical places accessible just by walking. I didn’t realize until recently how easy it is to use the public transportation here, so I’ll be going further away tomorrow to check other areas.

There’s one thing I absolutely hate here though. Internet access not very easy to get. The hotel I’m staying at and the cell phone carriers charge a lot of money. While a T-mobile dealer sold me a SIM that’s supposed to be 5 Euros/day flat rate, it stopped working only after a few hours! I’ll try to be nice when I see him tomorrow.

Video Center On Latest N82 Firmware Adds Scheduled Downloads

Last Thursday, v30 firmware was released for the Nokia N82. When I updated my N82, it bricked! Much to my surprise, Nokia Software Update provided instructions for getting it back up and running. Simply removing the battery and holding down the power button brought it back to life. Most news sites and blogs didn’t notice any major changes, but I found one that changes my viewing habits immensely.

It wasn’t until Saturday night that I opened up the Video Center. Normally I use a combination of Podcasting for my phone and Video Center for my Internet Tablet. I watch a lot of video podcasts on my N800 since the screen is larger. Some shows I watch on the N82, since it can handle higher quality video. I don’t use my computer because its VERY old and can’t really handle it.

I added WebbAlert to my channels and noticed that there’s some new options:

First, you can refresh feeds. This updates all your feeds. This could take a while, so don’t touch it until it’s done updating.

Second, you can schedule downloads. You can choose when you want to download (Night, morning, noon, afternoon, evening) and the access point.

From now on, Podcasting will be dedicated for audio downloads and Video Center will handle all video. Some people will prefer using Podcasting to handle all their new media needs, but I like to keep things separate.

One good reason to only use Podcasting is for opml support. You can import and export .ompl files to easily organize all your show with .rss feeds.

Using Video Center, you have to manually add shows. Even with cut and paste or a bluetooth keyboard, it takes time to input. So why am I putting myself through that kind of torture? Any video played from Video Center has a resume function. You can stop a video and come back to where you were watching later.

Recently, the N95-1 and N95-2 also got v30 updates. If you have one, does your Video Center also have these upgrades? Do you have a Feature Pack 2 device like the N78 or N96? Does the Video Center also have this feature?

To Germany For Maemo Summit

I am heading to Germany, but don’t expect less posts here. What’s great about blogging is that I can be anywhere. I have been sponsored by Nokia/Maemo to join them at the Maemo Summit on the 19th and 20th. I will be learning more about the platform, the Nokia Internet Tablets like Nokia N810 or N800, where they’re heading, and what it means to customers like us.

I’m looking forward to the summit and will gather as much information as I can to blog here.

Fortunately, I will also have some free time to tour Berlin so I am really excited! If you have any recommendations of places to see and visit let me know in the comments below. I installed a German translator on my phone to help me out while I’m out and about. I’ll also report back how useful it is.

By the way, I am writing this post on my Macbook Pro at JFK airport using my Nokia N95 8GB’s internet connection via Joikuspot while I wait for my flight. Tip: Search on Google Maps Then Navigate on Nokia Maps

I get frustrated whenever Nokia Maps cannot find places I search for. I end up opening Google Maps instead which finds them every time, but it doesn’t have turn-by-turn voice navigation that I want from Nokia Maps. I’m glad that the two apps share bookmarks or favorite places to fix that problem.

Whatever location or address that is bookmarked or saved on Google Maps is accessible to Nokia Maps and vice versa. Since Google is much better with searching, I recommend searching for the place you want to go using Google Maps, save the location as a favorite, then open up Nokia Maps to handle the navigation.

I am going to search for the location of a place called B and H Photos in New York City. My query is “BH photo.” Google finds it immediately while Nokia Maps does not find it al all.

Save it as a favorite in Google Maps.

Open Nokia Maps and go to Favorites - My Places. Select Drive to to go on your merry way!

Without Google Maps, I would have been really frustrated, quit, then called Nokia Maps crap. However, I love the voice navigation. It helped me get to many places safely. What about you? Is this how you use your GPS enabled phone?

Rugby Ralph Lauren Store NY Using QR Code For Online Shopping

When I read that the Rugby Ralph Lauren store in Union Square New York City were using QR codes, I had to check it out myself. QR codes are basically barcodes that compatible phones can read and redirect to a website URL. The cool thing about this is that the barcode reader comes pre-installed with the latest Nokia phones like the Nokia N95 8GB I was carrying.

The only QR codes I found at the Rugby Ralph Lauren store were at their doors. It read:

We are pleased to present shopping right from your phone. visit m.rugby.com or scan our QR code to shop new styles and check out the news room, Rugby’s blog.

Scanning the barcode forwarded me to their online store in mobile format. You can add stuff to the cart and checkout directly from the phone. I guess it’s useful if you happen to pass by the store after business hours and see something that you wanted at the window.

If you want to see where the QR code takes you, click on the photo above to enlarge it and use use the scanner. According to Nokia, the Nokia N82, N93, N93i, N95, N95 8GB, E66, E71, E90 or 6220 Classic have the Nokia barcode reader preinstalled on your device.

I personally wouldn’t take my credit card out right there on the sidewalk at night, but maybe I’m not seeing the main purpose? I was hoping the store had QR codes inside that forwarded me directly to specific clothes. It should give me an option to save the cart where I can purchase later when I get home if they didn’t have my size at the store. That would have been more useful for me.

Nokia BH-604 Used As Wireless Headphones With Computer

You’ll never catch me wearing the bulky and ugly Nokia BH-604 bluetooth headset outside, but I’m pretty happy using it indoors as a wireless headphone. It was sent to me as a prize for the S60 Smarts Contest.

Let me give you an example how useful it is. Sheila was really sleepy, but I was wide awake. I wanted to finish watching a Smallville episode but didn’t want to disturb her. Solution? Use the Nokia BH-604 as a wireless headphone connected to the Apple iMac via bluetooth. Setting it up is too easy. Here’s how I did it with a Mac:

Put the BH-604 in pairing mode by holding the call button. A blue LED flashes. Under the bluetooth icon on the Mac, click ’set up Bluetooth Device.’

I chose to use it as a headphone for this computer because that’s really all I need it to be.

When asked for a pairing code, the default is ‘0000.’ That’s it!

So even though I won’t be wearing it outside, I’m fine using the Nokia BH-604 as a wireless headphone when watching movies on our 24 inch iMac. Audio quality is fine, but I don’t have anything to compare it to. Would I recommend the BH-604? No… I like the form factor of the Nokia BH-603 better.

Nokia DT-22 Tripod Discontinued - Sunpak Versipod To The Rescue

The Nokia DT-22 Tripod and adapter is now hard to find, but don’t worry because there is a similar product called the Sunpak Verispod. The DT-22 and Versipod allows you to attach your mobile phone to the included mini-tripod as well as larger tripods using standard sockets. You can take clearer pictures using a tripod.

I don’t know why the Nokia DT-22 was discontinued as I think it is very useful. Videobloggers, photographers, or anyone else will come to situations where a tripod is necessary to take a photo or video. What’s also good to know is that you are not limited to one tripod. I use the adapter to connect with the Gorillapod and the Quikpod because of the standard socket.

If you can’t find the DT-22, buy the Sunpak Versipod for about $9 and select from three colors: blue, pink, or silver.

Vlog: Playing Pandamanda Game On Nokia N95 8GB With Motion Sensor

I made a video of PandaManda, a cool game for my Nokia N95 8GB that should work with other Nokia phones that feature a motion sensor or accelerometer. You control a panda wearing cape and goggles riding a tiny bicycle by tilting the phone. Can’t get any cuter than that! Check it out.

You basically have to go through each level to collect purple gems and find an exit. You also have to beat the clock, avoid falling, as well as other hurdles.

I like the graphics and sound quality… impressive when playing this game on the Nokia N95 8GB. It plays just like Marble Maze that I previously showed on video, but with better graphics and sound.

Vlog: Using Jawbone Bluetooth As Wireless Mic For Qik Video Streaming With Nokia N95 8GB

In my latest video, I show that you can use bluetooth headsets with Nokia phones for videos. I used a Jawbone with the Noise Assassin paired to a Nokia N95 8GB running Qik for video streaming. I think this is a great mobile setup for press or bloggers without an assistants who intend to do interviews.

My purpose was to show that bluetooth headsets can work as wireless microphones for our video powerhouse Nokia phones like the Nokia N95 8GB or the upcoming Nokia N85 or Nokia N96. This demo is a little extreme since you want your subject closer the camera for interviews… not two rooms away like I showed in the video.
