Nokia Maps is included with Nokia Lumia devices, but check out gMaps Pro if you want to use Google Maps on Windows Phone 8. It supports search, traffic, public transit, routes, street view, and more. There’s also navigation, but no voice support. Video after the jump.
Did you know you can use your Paypal account to pay for apps and games at the Windows Phone Store? I just learned that today. This is a new feature for Windows Phone 8 and is handy for those who can’t use the default carrier billing or don’t want to use a credit card. It takes less than a minute to set up.
Hello Friends is now one of my favorite apps for Windows Phone 8. It allows you to customize your lock screen with photos of your friends. It updates on a regular basis, so that there’ll be a new lockscreen whenever you use your phone. It changes automatically depending on the refresh time of your choice. Watch a demo of the app on the Nokia Lumia 810.
Rowi, my favorite Twitter app for Windows Phone was just updated for Windows Phone 8. I show how it works on the Nokia Lumia 920. It’s fast, resumes to where you left off, and you can now tweet with your voice too. Unfortunately, this version does not take advantage of the new lockscreen options for Windows Phone 8. The latest update for Nimbuzz (version 1.1.1) on Windows Phone now supports Push Notification service. This means means Nimbuzz users will be informed immediately when they receive new messages from their friends. Nimbuzz lets you send messages via Facebook Chat, Google Talk, Windows Live Messenger, and Yahoo! Messenger.
One thing that bothered me about Windows Phone, but learned to live with, is that apps restart when clicking on their tile from the homescreen or app list. If an app has already been launched then you go elsewhere, you can get back to where you left off by holding the back button. There was good news from WPCentral that launching an app in Windows Phone 8 that is already running will bring you to where you left off, not restart the app.
The official Twitter application for Windows Phone has never been good enough compared to the third-party apps, but the latest update adds one feature that none of the others have: REAL push notifications. You instantly get notified of new mentions, favorites, retweets, direct messages, or new followers. The settings page let you individually turn on/off any of these.
Camera Extras is now available for some Nokia Lumia owners. Luckily, I’m able to download it on my Nokia Lumia 900. This app will add 4 new options to your built-in camera settings. Take a look at the video.
As I’m traveling in Asia with the wife, there are apps on my Nokia Lumia 900 that have been getting a lot of usage. I’m featuring 5 of them in this video: Weatherbug, Tripadvisor, Nokia Transit beta, Currency, and Skyscanner. See how they work on the Nokia Lumia 900 in my demo video.
Quick Bandwidth Test for Windows Phone does exactly what the app’s name says. It’ll give you your network connection speeds. The simple app have no fancy graphics or animations that might affect test results. Take a look at this hands-on demo from my Nokia Lumia 900 before you try it.
