We’re very interested in the Nokia N900, but will it be too big? The best way to find out is through size comparisons between devices we’ve probably seen before. I’ve entered the Nokia N900 dimensions on Sizeasy next to the iPhone, Nokia E71, and Nokia N97. Take a look.

Actual Comparison

Here’s an actual comparison between the Nokia E71 and N900. This photo was shared by @chansearrington on Twitter.

I think the best way to imagine it in your hands is that it’ll have the width of the iPhone with the thickness of the Nokia N97. Fortunately Nokia made it shorter than all the devices compared here. Does the size of the Nokia N900 bother you?

Nokia just announced on Monday that the Nokia E71x is finally available in AT&T stores. That’s right… only $0.01 out of pocket if you extend your contract for 2 years.

Nokia just announced on Monday that the Nokia E71x is finally available in AT&T stores. I don’t recommend heading to the store and getting it for $99 after mail-in-rebate, because it is on Amazon for only a penny! That’s right… only $0.01 out of pocket if you extend your contract for 2 years.

The difference between the Nokia E71x and the previous Nokia E71 which I previously reviewed:

Nokia E71x will include customizations and probably restrictions from AT&T vs an unlocked Nokia E71. (more on this later)

Nokia E71x runs on S60 3rd Ed. FP2 vs. S60 3rd Ed. FP1 on E71.

You are required to pay $30/month for data plan on E71x vs. $15/month on an unlocked Nokia E71.

Do you think it’s better to just buy the unlocked Nokia E71 vs Nokia E71x? I would consider the E71x if they improved the camera quality from the E71.

I’ve had the Nokia E71 for a while, and it is really thin. Take out the battery, and you’d be amazed how Nokia fit everything else in the phone.

We still don’t know what Nokia will come out with around the same timeframe of the Eos’ availability, but I hope it blows our minds… and stay thin.

Want to change how your Nokia E71 looks? Why not try a different colored keypad or faceplate? Here are photos and instructions which show you how you can do it yourself. Even though it’s simple, I have to warn you to only try this if you are prepared to risk ending up with a broken phone.

For the extra faceplates and spare parts, many people seem to like CNN.CN. They include the Nokia E71’s faceplate, bottom cover and even a whole body replacement. The instructions below will show you how to remove just the faceplate and bottom cover.

I purposely omit the instructions that will enable you disassemble the phone further because the photos just look plain scary.

Steps

Release battery cover.

Unscrew four T4+ screws.

Open the two clips.

Do the same on the other side.

Lift the bottom of top cover NOT the bottom cover!

Remove the top cover as shown.

Press out the qwerty keypad.

Remove bottom cover.

Result

That’s it! Here’s a sample result from HoFo member rapidstar who replaced the keypad on his Grey Nokia E71 to white.

Trying it?

So now that you know how to do it… are you willing to open up your Nokia E71 to change its looks?

The photos were from the Bring Your Own Big Wheel race in San Francisco. The exif data shows they were taken with the Nokia E71. If you have the Nokia E71, you can probably guess that these photos were taken by the same phone because of the slight purple tint. If it wasn’t for that purple, I would still be using the E71!

I know this is a blog for Nokia fanatics, but how many of you are excited about the Palm Pre as well? I have to admit that I am a little bit..

You can’t wait for the Nokia N97 or the E75? Why not get a really cheap N95 8GB or E71 for now? They are currently being sold on Dell SB at a 25% discount, but use the stackable coupon 2J0TX0Z5NW22MB to bring the discount total up to 33%. This makes the N95 8GB and E71 on sale for $365 and $270 respectively. Act fast because the deal expires in 24 hours.

When I decided to go back to school at night, I knew I’d be taking on a long commute and I wouldn’t want to lug my Macbook Pro the entire way. In undergrad I used an ancient HP Jornada and a fold out keyboard to take all my notes. Having just acquired a Nokia E71, I thought, “Surely I can use my smartphone to take all my notes in class instead of a computer.”

And after a bit of research, I was right. To take all my notes in class all I need is my Nokia E71 on my desk and an Apple Bluetooth keyboard on my lap. As an added bonus, it’s completely doable using only software that comes preinstalled on the E71.

So why use a smartphone instead of a laptop in class? There are a myriad of reasons: my Nokia E71 has 3G data where I get reception and Wifi for those underground classrooms where I don’t, the battery life on my Nokia beats the pants off the battery life of my Macbook Pro and I don’t have this huge glowing screen between me and my professor.

Setup

Hooking an Apple Bluetooth keyboard up to your E71 is easy thanks to the Wireless Keyboard application. From the Menu screen, go to Office: Wlss. keybd. Select Options: Find Keyboard. If your handset’s Bluetooth isn’t already on, the program will prompt you to turn it on before it starts scanning.

Once the Nokia E71 starts scanning for keyboards, press the power button on the keyboard. Here’s the only tricky part of the whole process: after the two devices see each other, the handset will ask you to input a code on the keyboard. At this point, just type any four digits on the Apple keyboard followed by the Enter key (for example, in my pairing I typed ‘1111′, then Enter). Your phone will now ask for you to enter the same code. Do so and that’s it! Your E71 and your Apple Bluetooth keyboard are now paired. Open up QuickOffice, create a new document and you’re good to go for hours of note taking.

Usage

Once you’re done with class, you can either save the document to a microSD card in your phone. Once you get back to your computer, pop the card into a card reader to transfer the files over, or use Bluetooth to transfer them wirelessly.

A paired Bluetooth keyboard not only allows you type at full speed on your smartphone, it actually allows you to control your entire phone right from the keyboard. The arrow keys act like the D-pad, with the Enter key being Select. The two Command keys on either side of the space bar act like the two soft keys to open menus. Throw in the full email and web browsing experience we E-series owners are used to and it really becomes less of a mobile phone and more of a tiny computer.

And on those rare occasions when the keyboard runs out of batteries during a class (it’s only happened to me once), the easiest solution (besides carrying spare batteries) is to open up the voice recorder application and record the entire class to be transcribed later.

What about you?

I’ve only tried this with my Nokia E71, but there’s no reason it shouldn’t work with other Nokia phones, at least. Does anybody else use a Bluetooth keyboard with their device in class?

Questions

1. How many devices have you used over the past 6 months (please list them below)?

Owned: Nokia N95 8GB, Nokia E71, Nokia N85

Trialed: Nokia N96, Nokia 6220 Navigator

2. Has your trial experience ever led to you purchasing a Nokia device? I was not sent the Nokia N95 8GB, E71 or the N85 to trial beforehand. I bought them when they first came out and absolutely love them. On the other hand, my usage and trial experiences which I share on thenokiablog.com lead to visitors and friends purchasing Nokia devices.

3. Has your trial experience ever led to you recommend Nokia to friend? The Nokia N96 experience led me NOT to recommend the device to friends and thenokiablog.com visitors. During my trial, it had faulty firmware, slow response and was too annoying to use to bother testing further.

4. Which features of your Nokia device do you use most often (ie camera, GPS, gaming etc)? Please list below and feel free to list more than one… Web browsing, camera, GPS navigation

5. How often do you use the following Nokia services? [daily] [weekly] [monthly] [hardly ever] [not at all]

N-Gage – weekly

Nokia Maps – daily

Share on Ovi – Not at all. I prefer to use Flickr.

Nokia Music Store. Not at all because it isn’t available in USA.

Widsets – Not at all. Useless.

Nokia Email Service – Not at all. I’ve been using Profimail instead.

Mosh – Monthly. Good place to download free games.

7. How many mobile apps (games, widgets, downloads etc) have you installed and used over the last 2 months? [between 1 and 5] [between 6 and 10] [between 10 and 20] [more than 20] More than 20

8. How do you define “convergence”? Using one device instead of carrying a camera, iPod, cellphone, and gps navigator.

The ad explains the Nokia E71 is the thinnest qwerty phone in the world, having quick access to contacts, calendar, and email. Nokia Maps and GPS navigation were also mentioned. Having released long time ago, I’m sure the loyal readers here already know about the features on the Nokia E71. You can read our Nokia E71 physical review and the Nokia E71 review from a business user for more info.

It’s about conversations, how we view them, and how the E71 enables them. Currently, the site features 4 short films from artists with their interpretations. The pre-access site terms does not allow me to share the videos, but I’ll post some screenshots for preview.

Here’s how the main page looks like. Click on the image for larger view.

I’m not sure if I like the videos yet. If I can only have one word to describe them, it would be weird. Below are screenshots from the four videos.

I think the real purpose of the site is to tell consumers that the Nokia E71 is a powerful communication device. I’m not sure how obvious that might be to people viewing the videos though. Wait a couple of days until the site is open to the public and let me know what you think. It should be accessible via nokia.com/e71.

My recent discovery is the Posterous service that lets you quickly blog with photos or videos by using email on the phone. I’ve been enjoying using the Nokia E71 with Posterous for the past couple of days. The E71’s camera isn’t great, but you can use it to quickly share images on the blog posts. However, I can think of one other device that will be more suitable for this service.

It’s as simple as sending an email to post@posterous.com and attaching photos, videos, audio, and even other files. A blog will automatically be created with a random screen name, so you can just keep posting new entries by sending in more emails.

If you want to personalize the subdomain (for example markguim.posterous.com), then follow the instructions on the first email reply you get from Posterous. I created my first entry and account in just a few minutes while waiting for my fiancee to finish trying on clothes at the mall.

You can use your existing email solution to do this. I use Profimail, but there are a bunch of other email options available.

Auto Gallery and Video Player

Other than the major simplicity, my favorite Posterous feature is an automatic creation of an image gallery (sample post) if you attach more than one photos! They’ll also create a flash player (sample post) automatically if you chose to upload videos.

Autoposting

Posterous also has an option for automatic posting to other services like Facebook, Twitter, or Flickr. Whatever you post on Posterous can be forwarded to the other social sites you use. Only want to post to certain services? They have that option too.

Almost a perfect match

The Qwerty keypad on the Nokia E71 is great for Posterous because it makes it fast to create blog posts on the go. Since the E71 also has a 3 megapixel camera, it’s really useful to add photos and videos to the posts. Unfortunately, the camera is horrible. It looks like the Nokia N97 will be the perfect device for this.

This is a little bit of a rant. And please don’t misunderstand this post, I love Nokia and everything they do. I love the fact that they encourage creativity, blogging and the rich community of Symbian fans everywhere. I can’t help but feel like they are falling into the same dangerous pitfalls other companies (i.e. Moto, SE, RIM) have. What can they do better?

You may ask, Andrew, what brought on a rant about Nokia’s downfalls? This is THE Nokia Blog afterall, you should be singing praises for Nokia 24/7. Wrong. I want Nokia to make the best possible handsets, if they didn’t I wouldn’t write for this blog.

Never in the time that I owned any Blackberry, Sony Ericsson, HTC/WINMO Device was I able to share the joy of a high end handset that I was able to when I had an N95 or N95 8GB. Being able to take great pictures (and show others where the pictures were taken) and video, and immediately share video online or even on TV is what helped me convince people that a cell phone is and should be capable of doing a lot.

People that were once stubborn that they wanted to only have a cell phone to make calls and did not want to spend a lot on a fancy feature phone were wowed by what the N95s could do. A few even bought the N95 8GB on my recommendation at full retail (~$700!) in the US after having seen the pictures I took on vacation as they were taken and uploaded in almost real time. I was never able to do that with any other phone, no matter how impressive the feature set.

Blackberry’s Update

That said, early in September I was lucky enough to be provided with a Blackberry Bold (one of my retailer buddies really came through for me and got me an unlocked one). A few bugs aside, I was blown away. Updated OS, Great new Look, lots of new media features, amazing Blackberry keyboard, High-res Screen, they really have a winner here. Release delays, and criticisms aside, the Blackberry Bold, is a PROPER upgrade from the last generation.

It took everything good with the previous product lines and made it better (looks, media integration, messaging), they left every good staple of their phones intact (Keyboard, Email, BB messenger, security features), and they worked on their downfalls (sucky mp3 player, 2.5mm jack, cruddy processor, cruddy browser, boring unattractive OS, and worst of all, having to choose between Wifi/GPS on different models of the same phone).

Many of my colleagues have been waiting for this phone since they first heard it was being released, ignoring the 3G iPhone, E71, Touch Diamond etc. There were physical upgrades, and there was innovation. All in all a good balance. Call me a Blackberry fanboy, but the only thing I feel that this phone is missing from a hardware perspective is a good camera.

Nokia Going Off-Course

All this made me really think of the way Nokia has been in the last year, and of course, their upcoming lines. And while I don’t think they are completely heading in the wrong direction, I feel that they are going slightly off course. Below, I’ve listed a few of the things I would like to see done differently as we near the end of 2008 into 2009.

Please update your OS, processors and hardware for 2008/2009. I’m not saying completely revamp all these things, but c’mon, at least make it look like you’re trying! SE added the Xross media bar thing to their phones, and is doing that panel interface thing to the X1, RIM has OS 4.6 on the Bold, HTC has that fancy touchflo on top of Windows Mobile, why can’t you spruce up S40/S60? Well maybe not so much on S40, but we pay out the nose for S60 phones, bring on some more polish to the OS.

Speaking of polish, I love that you have the OLED screen thing going on the N85 and the Carbon Arte, now up the resolution! In 2009 320X240 will not be acceptable, the iPhone has 480×320 on that big screen, the Bold about doubled the resolution from the curve to 480×320 (on a significantly smaller than iphone screen no less), the Xperia is going to be 800×480. Finally, up the power on that processor. Right now even your newest phones have sub 400 mhz processors. More hardware power = nicer software = we’re happy.

Take a look at my two poorly taken pictures, if only the N85 had this kind of screen resolution to match the OLED.

Less Phones

Wait WHAT?! Less phones?! I’m talking high end phones here. Make a couple of Nseries devices and make them amazing. Don’t do what RIM did with their 8800 and Curves. The original 8300 curve had no GPS or wifi, the 8310 had gps, the 8320 had wifi, it wasn’t until mid 2008 before the 8330 came out with both wifi and gps, nearly a year after the original was released. That just isn’t fair.

Cameras

Likewise, don’t bring out a great camera phone and put a crappy flash on it, or take the lens cover off. N96, N95 8GB, N85, N82, N81, N78, 6220 Classic. So many phones with overlapping features, each slightly different, and based on when they were released very similar price points. Most of these phones have 5 megapixel cameras, GPS, wifi 3.5g, and differ slightly. They all run on S60 3rd ed. Seriously why make us choose. Choose a couple of form factors, make one or two variants and make them damn good. Look at the Samsung i8510 innov8. That phone is like the culmination of all these phones + a better camera AND it has a similar price point to the N96, maybe even a little bit cheaper at release depending on where you’re from.
WHY?!

US Support

PLEASE get US carrier support. We Love you in North America, thats why we keep buying your phones at full price. US carrier support means greater exposure, and subsidized phone prices. Earlier this year I was thoroughly convinced that the N95-4 was the best phone money could buy. I tried very hard to convince people of this, some bought them, some didn’t. Those who didn’t only didn’t because they couldn’t stomach buying a 700 dollar cell phone. In fact, the last time I walked into a ATT/TMO/Verizon store, I dont remember seeing anything past 700 dollars for a standalone handset.

Better Email

HTML email + better internet browser for S60 out of the box. As I said in my earlier Nokia E71 review, by now, there’s no excuse for not having html email. It should be built into the client. The internet browser is chock full of features for a stock browser, but I can’t help but feel that its sluggish at times and sometimes just errors out and blows up on its own. Maybe this goes back to the slow processor not being able to handle it. Maybe the browser just needs a revamp.

Browser

Whatever, I just want to take advantage of the awesome 3.5g you put into my phone. This isn’t Windows Mobile. I don’t want to have a 3rd party browser because the stock one sucks (OK the S60 browser doesn’t suck but its no Skyfire).

Upgrades

Uniform and regular firmware updates across all regions. Probably easier said than done, yes, but many a N95-3 user felt burned by the lack of love.

I guess after using a Bold and seeing the difference between last gen’s BB compared to today’s latest and greatest, I can’t help but feel like the N96 is a slight incremental upgrade and not the super flagship model it should have been. Not to say that it isn’t looking to be a very good handset, but for that price why the slight upgrade? 8 Megapixel phones becoming the new high end standard, don’t fall behind! Other companies tried to imitate the 5mp Camera that was on the N95, they tried, some were close, many failed.

The Phone to Beat

The reigning champ is getting old, and the competition is newer bigger and faster. Don’t pull a Moto and start making pink N95’s now. We want Nokia to create the phone to beat again.

Live Versus Edited

We have written about Qik a few times and there are several reasons why people like it. It’s not a hassle to get a video online. You click stream and the video goes up right away. Below are examples of two videos of the same event. One video was edited on my laptop before uploaded, while the Qik version is the real unedited version that was streamed and available right away. Notice the difference?

It looks like maybe the Nokia E72 have a better camera and the spacebar was reduced to make way for additional buttons compared to the Nokia E71. Let’s analyze the leaked Nokia E72 and E75 video again. It looks just like the E71 but thicker and available in bright red color. What does the extra thickness bring in addition to the thinner Nokia E71?

In the photo below, you can see a clear border around the camera with inscriptions right below it. It is implying to me that the camera could be one of the the Nokia E72’s highlighted features. Wishful thinking tells me “Carl Zeiss” is written somewhere there.

Also take a closer look the spacebar on the Nokia E72. Instead of taking up the space of 4 buttons like on the Nokia E71, it is only taking up 2 buttons. It looks like Nokia created separate buttons for the “Chr” and “Ctrl” buttons on the right side and separated the buttons for the forward slash “/” and at sign “@” on the left side. Those are great adjustments in my opinion, but I’m not sure if other people will like a smaller spacebar.

Let’s compare it to the current Nokia E71’s keyboard below. Certainly a difference in the layout between the two devices.

Introducing a better camera for the Nokia E72 will make me a big fan. I enjoy using the Qwerty keypad on the Nokia E71, but not so impressed with the camera. The smaller spacebar will probably take time to get used to, but I like the adjustments made to separate some buttons. I think it’ll make for a better email and typing experience.

Appetizers

For appetizers, we had salmon roll and buffalo wings. Both are made of fake meat… even the salmon. It tasted just like… salmon. The wings were definitely not close to looking like the real deal. They were still delicious, though.

Entree

For the main entree, I had Thai Soy Beef Curry. It was spicy, but bearable. From rating of 1 for slightly spicy to 5 for volcanic spicy, it was around 2. It looks like beef, but you’ll know the difference when you start chewing. It doesn’t have that ‘meat juice.’ Nonetheless, I can’t complain about the taste. It was pretty good.

Sheila had Voodoo Sticks from the menu, which is grilled soy beef and peeper kabobs. She said it needed more seasoning. The portion is also smaller compared to our appetizers and the beef curry I ordered. We probably wouldn’t order it again.

Nokia N95 8GB Camera

I really enjoy using the Nokia N95 8GB’s camera. It’s a lot better than the Nokia E71, which is unfortunate because I love that QWERTY keypad. I don’t want to carry two devices, so it looks like I’ll be using the Nokia N95 8GB more often this week… until I start missing the E71 again.

It’s inevitable but Andrew compared the Nokia E71 to the iPhone as well. Test showed the Nokia E71 was more reliable with the GPS signal. Flash on the web browser enables full access to the YouTube site on the E71 unlike the iPhone.

In the end, the small 2.3 inch screen might be a letdown, but in every other way thinks it equals or betters the iPhone. Check out the pics and video after the jump.

Verdict

The Proclip mounting solution requires you to purchase a specific mount built for your car, and then a specific holder for your phone. I explained this more thoroughly in my previous ProClip review.

The ProClip holder for the Nokia E71 fits perfectly with the phone. You just slide it in and can feel how secure it is in place. Since the mount was also made specifically for my car model, I don’t have to worry about my phone falling off when hitting those nasty New York City potholes.

Expensive but worth it. To put the Nokia E71 on my 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse, it’ll cost:

Holder with Tilt Swivel – $39.99 (add $40 for built-in charger)

Mount – $34.99

Move Clip Kit (optional to easily slide in multiple devices in one holder) – $13.99

Sure, I can get one of those cheap plastic windshield suction holders, but do I want to put my $400+ phone at risk of falling off and breaking? I don’t think so. The ProClip is expensive, but you really get what you pay for. Just ask anyone who owns it already.

Know other solutions that may work as well as the ProClip? Do you own it already? Please let me know what you’re thinking.

After just over a week of both professional and personal use of the Nokia E71 I have a lot to report back on. Have you wondered if this could replace your work Windows Mobile device or Blackberry?. My impressions (both good and bad) after the break.

Let me start off first by saying that I love this thing. While Mark is quite fond of camera/media features (as he blogs/vlogs much more than I do), I appreciate the business end of my phones a lot. And for that reason, I feel that this device can actually replace my Nokia N95 8GB (N95-4) for all daily usage. Can you use this phone completely replace your blackberry for email and messaging? Tough question. Lets weigh in all the factors shall we?

Form and Appearance

The E71 is without a doubt the most attractive, well built qwerty smartphone I have ever had the pleasure of using. Pictures do it no justice, you have to actually hold it to see how small/thin it is. The phone is a bit heavier than one might think by looking at it, and that is because of the abnormally large battery inside and the metal trimmings on the phone (e.g. the back cover).

Nokia E71: Look how thin it is!

I like that Nokia is adding metal to their phones, it gives it a really nice premium feel. You aren’t just buying an expensive phone that does a lot and look cool, its made of quality materials too. Compared to every blackberry I own or have owned, the Nokia E71 wins in this category hands down, every time. I love my Blackberry Curve, but the Nokia E71 is much sexier.

Keyboard

The Nokia E71 looks good on paper, rich feature set, 3g, qwerty keyboard, all around business device. But how is the phone to type on? Personally, I like the keyboard very much. The feel of the keys is very nice and the middle of each key is raised slightly to make it easier to type. If I had to rate it versus a Blackberry, I would say its on par or even a little better than the 8800 series, but not as good (pretty close) as the curves or the 8700 series. This of course is a very good thing as most of us can agree that the Blackberries are the holy grail of smartphone keyboards.

Email, Web and Messaging

Here is where the line starts to blur. The browser is the same s60 webkit browser you have grown to love. Flash lite support on a screen thats already landscaped + the qwerty keyboard = the most rewarding internet experience from Nokia yet (save for the Nokia E90, but that phone is a good bit bigger). Already, the Nokia E71 beats any stock WinMo phone or Blackberry in this category.

It is worth noting that Skyfire is in beta stages for S60. Skyfire puts phones capable of using this browser on the same level. The only thing that comes close to the full rendering of this browser is the browser on the new Blackberries (e.g. Bold, Kickstart, Javelin, and Thunder). So in this regard, out of the box the Nokia E71 provides the best internet browsing experience, especially on a 3.5g network such as ATT’s.

Email is a mixed bag. I feel that in order for this to truly be a business device, Nokia really needs to revamp the way email works on their phones. Yes, it syncs to Exchange. Yes you can get your personal Gmail on here. But how does it look? How much can you check? Is it in real time? And unfortunately the answer to those questions are all no.

Nokia is creating a push service with Nokia Email to rival blackberry connect, as it took away Blackberry Connect from the Eseries (as RIM is a competitor afterall), until then, any email fiends will not be quite as connected as they once were.

The phone does not have html email. I feel that by today, any leading edge smartphone should have html email. Even the old Blackberries via software update are getting this feature. This phone has 3g so it should have no trouble rendering or loading html emails. It is good with attachments though, and office documents/pdfs are pretty easy to look at, 3g helps with the large downloads.

In the end, does it get the job done? Yes, but not as well as I would like. I feel like this is something in between the iPhone’s email capabilities and a Blackberry’s.

Any kinds of instant messaging can be done with a 3rd party IM client (I currently use Slick). I hated using instant messaging on my Nokia N95 primarily because I didn’t have a qwerty, but now it’s perfect. 3G also makes sending files over aim on your data plan very snappy.

Final Verdict

So there you have it, the pros and cons to the Nokia E71 from the business side. If perfect up to the minute email is for you, then this might not be the device you are looking for. If you were looking for an s60 phone that is good sized, syncs to Exchange, and has a qwerty, then the Nokia E71 is a real winner. Are we likely to see the E71 widespread among offices (at least in the states)? Probably not, due to no carrier support, but I wouldn’t be surprised if someone traded their Palme Treos for a sexier device. Overall though, it is a great hybrid device.

Results

The Nokia E71 takes 320×240 pixel resolution videos at 15 frames per second and shoots 3.2 megapixel photos. Comparing this to the powerhouse Nokia N95 8GB that shoots 640×480 resolution at 30 frames per second, we can’t expect much. But for those who just shares videos online like Youtube, Flickr, or Facebook, the Nokia E71 is ‘good enough.’

Alicia Keys was spotted using the white steel Nokia E71 in her new music video, Superwoman.
The Nokia E71 appears at 1:18 to 1:24 on the video below. Note: It might not be visible in some RSS readers.

Of course, this is all a marketing plug for Nokia, but I’m surprised the Nokia E71 was showcased in a music video. I’m guessing Nokia also wants the Sidekick-loving, text-messaging addict teenagers to find out more about the business-centric Nokia E71 from the Eseries. If you haven’t read it yet, make sure to read my Nokia E71 review on the physical aspects.
After two weeks with the Nokia E71, I have prepared the first part of the review for this phone. I’ll talk about the physical aspects of the Nokia E71. A lot of people will be considering this phone because of the QWERTY keypad, slick shape and 3G compatibility in North America, but interested buyers need to consider if they can do with the multimedia features not up to par with Nseries phones.

First Impressions

I always show off the phones I have to my friends and family. The Nokia E71 looks really good according to whoever I show it to. The main keywords that get mentioned are, “shiny” and “thin.” On the Boy Genius Report’s Nokia E71 review, they wrote that the Nokia E71 could be one of the sexiest damn phones they’ve seen in a very long time.

Build Quality. The Nokia E71 feels good to hold. It does not look or feel cheap at all. The battery cover takes up most of the space on the back and is made of stainless steel instead of plasticky material we are all used to. The front surface is smooth with rounded corners, while that shiny material is striking to the eyes.

To get nit-picky, I notice a space between the screen and keyboard, leaking light out that is noticeable in the dark.

Light leaking between display and keypad on Nokia E71.

Color. I am playing with the grey steel version of the Nokia E71. A white version is available, but I have not had a chance to see one in person. I love how the black keypad flow with the shiny steel color on the front, and then seamlessly flush with some sort of a hard see-through plastic or glass on top of the display. Yes, the Nokia E71 is sexy-shiny! take a look at All About Symbian’s Nokia E71 review with the white version.

Display

The Nokia E71’s screen is 2.36 inches compared to 2.8 on the Nokia N95 8GB and 2.4 on the Nokia N82 although having the same 320×240 resolution. You can check my Nokia E71 vs Nokia N95 8GB vs Nokia N82 Screen Size Comparison for a closer look.

Nokia N95 8GB vs Nokia E71 vs Nokia N82.

Even with the smaller screen, web browsing is actually more convenient on the Nokia E71 than on the Nokia N95 8GB because the display is already in landscape mode having a wider view. With the Nokia N95 8GB, you have tilt to the side or open the slider, and then have to put it back to portrait mode to login or search websites.

It’s barely noticeable but the screen on the Nokia E71 is not as bright as the Nokia N95 8GB. However, the images are sharp and I have no complaints in this area.

Buttons

I’ve been a long time numeric keypad user on my phones, but now I see what I’ve been missing. Qwerty on the Nokia E71 makes it so much easier and faster to write emails, text messages, or fill out forms on websites. Common characters like the question mark (?) and the @ sign are accessible to one press instead of pressing the shift button first on our regular pc keyboards.

Great keypads. They keypads are great, but not perfect. People with bigger fingers might accidentally press the wrong buttons, but I did not have any problems with it. The buttons are raised so that if you run a finger from side to side, you can easily distinguish buttons. For the phone’s size and weight, I think Nokia did an excellent job on the qwerty keypad. Cnet UK agrees on their Nokia E71 review by saying, “E71’s keypad is one of the best Qwerty keypads we’ve ever laid fingers on.”

Side buttons. On the side, there are three buttons: dedicated record button, and the volume control. If you press and hold the record button on the main display, voice dialing gets activated and you can say a contact to to dial. On the Nseries phones without the dedicated button, you need to press and hold the right soft key.

Power. The power is the only button on top of the Nokia E71. There’s nothing special worth mentioning here. You use to turn on/off the phone, as well as change profiles to silent, normal, outdoor, etc.

Speakers

I’m impressed with the loudspeaker on the Nokia E71. Try playing a movie on maximum volume on the Nokia E71 and you’ll find it too loud! That is actually a good thing! The handset speaker is normal during phone calls (yes it can make calls). Increasing the max volume a little bit would be better, but it’s not a big deal. The Nokia E71 review by My-Symbian agrees that the speaker is “very loud and clear.”

The Nokia E71’s speaker is loud and clear.

Connections

There are two rubber flap doors on the left side of the Nokia E71 covering the micro USB and microSD ports. They seem to do a great job locking and staying in place. There’s also an infrared port for those who want to use it to transfer files with other compatible devices.

Micro-USB. The Nokia E71 connects to your computer through a micro-usb port. It’s not as common as the mini USB, but expect to see more phones use these types of ports. Unfortunately, the USB connection does not allow charging.

MicroSD and MicroSDHC. The Nokia E71 comes with 2GB microSD card. I’m glad Nokia is getting generous about this, since I remembered digital camera companies only provided 256mb or 512mb cards leaving the customers to spend extra for bigger storage. The Nokia E71 should also be able able to support microSDHC cards to expand your storage. Currently, the maximum capacity of cards available is 8GB.

2.5mm jack. You can’t insert your standard earphones on the Nokia E71 so you either have to stick to what Noki gives you with the phone, or get an adapter. Not a dealbreaker, but thumbs down.

Standard 3.5mm earphones will not fit on the Nokia E71

Camera

Protection. The Nokia E71 does not have a camera lens cover and is raised above the rest of the back surface. I wondered why it was designed like this since I thought it will attract scratches to the camera. After a closer look, the raised hump actually protects the camera on flat surfaces. The angle created by the hump slightly raises the camera lens away from the surface.

Image Quality. At the current firmware version, I am disappointed with the 3 megapixel camera on the Nokia E71. Expect to see your object covered with a purple tint. The autofocus is works fine by pressing the ‘T’ button before snapping the picture, but the end result is a letdown considering I had this problem with the original Nokia N95 when it was released more than a year ago. I would have thought that after a year, Nokia can fix the problem. Take a look at a color comparison with the Nokia E71 vs Nokia N95 8GB vs iPhone photos.

Physical Conclusion

The slim design and full QWERTY keypad on the Nokia E71 makes it optimal for messaging on the go. Its great looks puts the icing on the cake. I’m not happy with the camera quality, but many will say they are not buying this phone for the camera.

On the next part of my Nokia E71 review, I’ll cover some of the features and actual user experiences. Make sure to stay up to date by subscribing to the Nokia blog’s feed.
